Talking draft.

Jarvis Jones is the only edge defender on the roster heading into 2015. I'm pretty sure signing Moats is pretty high on their list. He made minimum + $65k in signing bonus last year on the open market so he's likely a cheap depth signing.

Remember Jordan Zumwaldt was used as an edge defender last pre-season before he got hurt/IR. I thought he was an ILB guy coming out of college, but Tombert considers him an OLB. Maybe they have a lot higher hopes for him than some of us realize.

That's it. Pretty thin.

we also have Howard Jones. Could be a platoon of Jarvis, Zumwalt, HoJo and Moats (hopefully he re-signs)

Yeah, right now Moats is our best bet as a signing. He is better than Jones right now and will see the opportunity if we lose Worilds. He has played in both the 4-3 and 3-4 and been adequate...but i know we have plenty of that.

Moats I think we should try to keep. I'm pretty much convinced that someone else will overpay Worilds, which is fine.

Jones looks the part, but showed little in the pre-season. I'd like to give him another chance in camp.

Zumwalt was injured and only played one game, but his height, movement skills, and hitting ability stood out. At the very least he could be a solid special teams guy. He needs to bulk up a bit.

Moats? Mostly a depth guy. His upside is just about filled.

Jarvis Jones? Maybe or break year for him. Right now, he's not even Clark Haggans.

actually, his weakness is staying on the field.
i was just wondering if his quickness would allow him to be an edge rusher.

Edge defenders need to transition POWER to QUICKNESS. What makes 'em good is when they can do that. And they have to have great hand-to-hand skills. Most OLB's have a significant reach disadvantage to OT's so it's vital you see on film the ability to push/pull, rake, slap and just generally have quick hands while the legs are doing other things (and keep their balance). And the great ones can do all the hand-to-hand **** and power and still bend the corner and accelerate to the QB.

Good edge defenders are a special breed. Kind of like undersized fighters. It's hard to find a guy that wants to fight a guy 50-70 lbs heavier than him every play and keep coming back for more.

That's not Shazier in my opinion. Some guys just like to run around and tackle and make plays.

I know people don't want to hear this, but I fully expect Tombert to franchise tag Jason Worilds this off-season.

We'll release Polalmalu and announce a big Roethlisberger contract to lower his cap hit in March and franchise tag Worilds.

We'll play around with what little money we have left to sign some mid-level free agents in the secondary/RB to fill in holes. We'll draft an OLB, OT and secondary depth with our top-4 picks.

We'll sign Heyward, Worilds and Beachum to long-term contracts in July/August (in that order).

Next year we'll have Worilds and Jones as our starting OLB. We'll still have good depth at ILB. We'll have Moats and Zumwaldt and rookie at backup OLB. We'll have a lot of new no-name faces in the secondary. The D-line stays the same (no Keisel).

That's it. Nothing fancy.

No way ???? Coach is that you ? The coach ????? I haven't seen u since you said troys head was to big .,. Please tell me it's you, I thought when u say a player is a bust because of a big head. Then that player turns out to be one of the best players of all time ., that's a lifetime ban ???? Well I'm glad your back.

Is this the coach ????

Don't listen to the imposter

I AM Coach

I have spoken

There are only about two first-round cornerbacks in the draft. Peters is a major character concern and Waynes has the potential, but lacks mass. Outside of these two, I think we are looking at a lot of borderline first-round cornerbacks. Would prefer not to reach and instead grab one in the second, where there is some good value.

As much as the Steelers need a pass rusher, I don't think they take a linebacker in the first three years in a row. This draft is deep with pass rushers and there will be players available in the second and third. Plus, with a 3-4 year developmental window as a pass rusher, we will not see much early on. One name that will be interesting is Beasley. I am not confident that he'll contribute much against the run, but he has an elite first step and do you pass on a rookie who may actually be able to step right in and generate pressure?

I love a big nose tackle in the middle of the defense and they have not replaced Hampton with that type of player. Shelton is very good against the run and has outstanding numbers when it comes to tackles for a loss and sacks. Tuitt, Shelton and Heyward is a pretty potent defensive line with McCullers as a backup (McLendon is a FA after this year, I believe). You win games in the trenches, let's get a dominant defensive line in place.

A lot of criticism for not acquiring a "lockdown corner". I've watched the Steelers over 50 years and they've had 3 lockdown corners-Blount(3rd rd), Woodson(1st rd), and Taylor(4th rd). There were 2 "franchise" QB's over the same period. Not always as easy as it might look and a very tough position to evaluate because college and pro QB's and WR's are so different.

I was looking on one website and they were suggesting we pick some DE that is over 6' and weights 220. How in the hell can a 220 lb dude take on a 350 lb offensive lineman on almost every play? That is just stupid. The dude would be worn out by half time. We need someone 250 lbs, strong and fast. I don't want any more projects coming from the 1st or 2nd rounds. Those guys need to be able to hopefully start in year 1. Any project type players come from the later rounds. Sounds obvious to me but what the hell do I know.

Overall, I think you're right except that Worilds won't get any kind of tag. That's just too big of a cap hit for a guy who is clearly not an elite player.

I don't think Howard Jones even enters into the minds of Tombert when they are thinking about what to do at OLB. He hasn't done anything to put himself in the conversation; anything they get out of him in 2015 would be a bonus.

I am not sure why I feel this way but I have some strange feeling we end up with Vic Beasley and I have no opinion cause I haven't seen much of him, but this is the guy right now I feel Tomlin has his eyes on. Thoughts?

True, but the guy was an undrafted free agent, it's not very often that these guys step right in and play a ton in their first preseason. Jones had an impressive combine, might be a guy they can bring along.

Sure, but there's a guy like that every year. We all love to root for the guy who has good combine numbers and made a couple plays in Q4 of a preseason game or two, but until proven otherwise he is nothing more than a camp body...the next Adrian Robinson or Andre Frazier or the many others that we've all forgotten about...

As for Zumwaldt, it would seem he has an uphill battle for a roster spot. He might be able to play a little OLB in an emergency, but he really looks like an ILB on tape and we already have 4 ILBs who will be ahead of him on the depth chart. I guess if he is a special teams demon he could take Terrance Garvin's spot...

Was Max Starks an elite player?

The Steelers are not playing Zumwaldt inside. He is part of the OLB mix/depth chart discussion. That's a decision being made by Tombert and with Butler's input. I doubt that changes now that Butler has been promoted.

Does it even matter? They should play him at OLB because there won't be any reps available at ILB. His only chance is to be a special teams monster.
