Talking cap. 2015

The new contracts this year are going to be Roethlisberger, Heyward and Beachum (maybe).

I have no idea how to evaluate Beachum's worth right now or even guess how much he would get on the open market. I don't get the impression other GM's think that highly of him or consider him a top-15 LT (and pay him like one). Because he's only scheduled to make $600k this year, there is some pressure for him/agent to take a home town discount. Getting $10 million guaranteed seems awfully tempting if you have to play a season scared of injury at $600k.

Heyward is the exact opposite. He's already scheduled to make close to $7 million this season so there is little reason for him to take a long term deal unless the price is right (i.e. close to free agency value). That $7 million becomes guaranteed the minute he makes the 53-man roster. It's going to take a good deal with a decent amount of guarantees to get him signed.

We all know Roethlisberger is going to break the bank and he's not going to take that much of a home town discount because he's been playing at a home town discount the last two seasons (at least according to him).

These are NOT cap issues (the net result of new deals actually lowers our 2015 salary cap), but more where are these players "slotted" in the salary structure of the team moving forward. Does Beachum think he's worth more than Pouncey because he's the LT and Pouncey's the center? How do you create a healthy offensive line pay scale when your LT isn't the highest paid guy on the team (both Beachum and Pouncey are greater assets than Beachum imo)?

Three new contracts with LOTS of up front money to Roethlisberger might be a little tight on the cash flow for the Rooney's to expect that much of a splash in free agency, but I do expect more depth signing in the secondary, RB, WR, OLB.

Beachum as the only player who can play LT and hold. IMO, he's not a top 10 NFL LT, but he will be paid like one.

He may not be the best LT but he's OUR best LT. ;)

^^^ The truth. And since a smart team doesn't let their best LT go, he's going to be paid.

So I guess a lot of this off-season (and how much money we have to spend) will revolve around Beachum and his contract demands.

I don't offer him that much. I can pay him $650k this year and tag him next year at around $10 million, so I'm not guaranteeing him anything more than that in a long-term contract. Period. If he wants to risk injury this year and next year just to get the tag in 2016, go for it. That's an awfully good bargaining position for the Steelers to be in. Remember, Beachum is LAST on the totem pole too and likely won't even start talking contract seriously until training camp. Just practicing during camp puts pressure on the negotiations from the Steelers side.

If you're Beachum's agent, I'm not sure you can argue a lot of money right now. If anything my main goal might be to make it short-term and try to get around $10 million guaranteed now and how to get another payday down the line. I certainly wouldn't take a 6-year deal and would argue hard for only a 4-year deal.

So the Steelers might offer something like 5-years, $29 million and Beachum might counter with a 4-year, $25 million or something close.

Does anyone here really see Beachum worth more than that considering what we can pay him over the next 2 seasons with the tag?

Hole Lee ****. Coach is back. Lol, welcome back to the nut house.

Depending on what they do w FA pick-ups, I think they will offer Beachum G money plus a larger bonus (for playing LT as a back-up). A 3 year 15mil deal might get it done if we are going after a guy like Roos. It also might depend on the projection of Villanueva as well...I hear he is up around 340# and has the intangibles to be a good LT.

If we don't project Beachum as a future G and keep him at T, we will go w a longer deal for about the same yearly, IMO. Regardless of how he has done here, it will be tough for a team to sign him at a position he simply isn't built for, IMO.

Thanks Supersteeler. This place is like Cheers, minus the Boston backdrop.

Man, I have no idea where any of this is coming from. Beachum is going to be playing LT for us for a long time. There is absolutely no plan to move him to guard.

Holy **** it is the in famous coach ... Damn even after all these years of looking like a complete fool by saying Troy would never turn out to be anything because his head is to big ( lol ) you finally show back up at the end of his career to bad mouth him and cut him ,.. In case u didnt know you sure missed on your assessment of Troy. He only turned out to be one of the if not the greater steelers of all time. Along the way of winning 2 superbowls for us and making every steelers fan ( other that you ) proud to call him a steeler. This is funny as hell after all these years you show back up and want him cut. Lol. Coach the great talent scout.

His head is to big. Lol. That's great I wonder whst would happen if we found a NT with an *** to big ? Another HOF I guess

And by the way don't take anything I said to personal. In just poking at u ... You deserve it after missing on a player that bad.

This breaks it down pretty simply:

http://www.Invalid Link - Check SN ...cted-look-steelers-2015-salary-cap-situation/

Cut vs retire for Troy is about the same, better if its a June 1st designation=max 3.75 million savings.
Cut Moore and Cam Thomas= about 3 million.

This puts us at about 11 million over. Ben extended will save us probably about 3 or 4 million on this year, which would put us at about 14-15 million to sign FA's and our draft class.

this article breaks it down player by player:

How does it effect the cap if Troy takes a pay cut (like Ike did last year)?

Releasing him saves $6 million.

Whatever his salary would be for this year would subtract from that (unless it's a structured 2 or 3 year deal with signing bonus, which I would doubt).

I think it's kinda moot since neither one of them has any game left anyway.

Where do you get $6 million from? Everything ive seen says Troy retiring or being cut would amount to $3.75 million savings at max.

They can designate him a post-June 1st hit and spread the dead money out to $2.25 million this year and $2.25 million in 2016.

That's a $6 million savings from his projected $8.25 million he's currently on the books for. No reason not to do it that way really.

We won't touch Ben for that. I can see the rest of your stuff and agree with it ., but Ben is getting 25 mil a year. You can count on that. With around 40 or so In his pocket. It's gonna be un real .. The good news is many will follow him and kill their teams budget as well

Blair Buswell ( Man who does the hall of fame bronze busts ) will surely give Troy's head and hair a proper place in Canton! Troy started out poorly as a rookie, then proved anyone who felt he wasn't going to be good wrong! This goes back 10+ years, so my memory as to why I said it could be a little off. The infamous head comment was directed as his stature. Short of like Fletch is actually 6'4" tall, with the afro 6'9"! Well Troy was 5'10", but at shoulder distance and arm distance reaching up, guys below his height had more range. I think that was the angle I was going for.

But age and injury have caught up to Troy. He played poorly in 2014 ( Zero interceptions and how many passes defended? ) and his wife wants him to retire. If Troy comes back for 1-2 million a year, I'd be okay with him for one more season.

Cheers.

at 32 4 years 100 mill giving ben, hardcore 25 mill with his injury history its risky, unless we add another reliable OL like Roos for 2 years 8 mill, and have Beachum at LG, and this year in rnd 3 or 4 draft a good LT and next march give Beachum a new deal 5 years 25 million

Well actually if I recall the head comment was made due to the concussion problems Troy dealt with..

If Wilson signs before Ben, Ben's contract will be higher. My guess is Seattle will pay a ton for Wilson. Ben will want more than him. Hopefully, they can get something done before Wilson is signed.

wilson will get more b/c he is younger and with the way things are looking he will have the same amount of rings as Ben, Ben will have relieze if he wants to retire a Steeler say 5 more years despite the market value is 20 mill and altough ben has been for the past few years been playing at 15-16 mill or less the amount of injuries he has the most I think we can give him is 6 years 110 million which averages 18.3 mill with 28 mill gauranteed

year 1 20 million base
2 23 base
3 21
4 19
5 14
6 13

at year 3 draft a qb in rnd 2 or 3 to groom
