Suppose Rudolph shines in camp, what are the chances we can trade Jones or Dobbs?

Dobbs will be odd man out. Wasted 4th round pick that could have been used on defense in 2017. It will be Ben backed up by Jones with Rudolph bringing up the rear as the no. 3.
Rudolph’s time to back up Ben will be the 2019 season after Jones leaves.
Then we shall see how the young Mr. Rudolph has progressed. I’m betting he’ll be the eventual starter when Ben retires probably after 2019 or 2020 season.

I guess every pick that doesn't pan out is a wasted pick. So yeah.....wasted pick. He will get cut and thrown onto our practice squad if/when he clears waivers. If this happens. Then next season when Jones is a FA we let him walk and Mason moves up to the #2 spot and Dobbs makes back to our #3 spot with 2 years of experience of our system. Will it still be a wasted pick? I'm sure some will say it is....other may not.

Reread the part that says shines in camp. Not mini camp. One qb is getting cut. I’d rather get a draft pick than cut one of them.

Dobbs was a wasted pick. I can’t see anyone offering a pick for him. But Landry Jones could be worth something.

And if Dobbs is cut and clears waivers we could sign him to our practice squad. A good possibility this could pan out.

Yep, wasted pick imo of Dobbs. I don’t think he was all that special at Tennessee if you want to know the truth. Color him gone after summer camp. Needs to go pursue his life’s work which frankly isn’t too bad with his chosen field of study.
Abandon any thoughts you may have as Dobbs ever being a starter or even a backup.

Landry either looks very good or very bad, there is no in-between. I think he does better when Ben gets hurt in a game and he doesn't have time to think about it. When Ben is out the next week and Landry knows he's playing and has all week to prepare is when he usually looks like ****.

He probably psyches himself up too much leading up to the game.

Nasa Dobbs. I'll be happy for him if he actually persues his life's work away from football.
Character guy to root for, would rather he go out a Steeler in his short football career.

if hes cut in favor of Landry and Rudolph. Why would we want to keep him around?
Sometimes getting cut is situational. I mean technically he is pretty much cut now. Bens on team. Landry is on team because he is still the best two week solution. I dont think there is much Dobbs could do to beat out Rudolph.
The only way Dobbs makes this team is if someone is injured. Please dont be Ben.

Re-read the part about . There is no Senior Bowl or DVR’d Senior Bowl practices to evaluate Rudolph. So what’s your evaluation based on?

Speaking of DVR'd tape...

I actually record many Bowl games every year, mainly for pre and post-draft evaluation... and just be cause I like college football alot.

Lat night I watched the Bowl game between Virginia Tech and Oklahoma St. I was disappointed our first round pick didn't play in that game, but I did obviously did get a chance to look at Washington and Rudolph closely..

I wont bore you with "scouting hyperbole" , mainly because I aint one! lol

But I can tell you Washington could add as much value as JuJu did in his first year, in fact, he impressed me more than JuJu coming out of college.
And in my humble opinion, I strongly believe Mason Rudolph is the real deal, and we got our post-Ben QB!

The kid was impressive in every sense of being able to project as a very good starting QB in the NFL. I cant believe he was their for us in the third round!. His deep ball accuracy was every bit as good as Aaron Rogers, who I feel is the best deep ball passer in the NFL today.

I believe this kid has a chance when it is all said and done, to be the best QB taken in the 2018 NFL Draft

Dobbs or Jones have 0 trade value. Dobbs will be the odd man out. I feel that Dobbs could be as good as Jones, but he does not know the system. Jones is pretty bad and more of a third stringer. i hope rudolph shines enough to take over the backup qb and jones can be the mentor. i doubt this will happen because its not the steeler way

When has Tomlin ever said ANYONE looked bad in minicamp?

i can recall only once. it was with Urbick who ended up getting cut immediately in his first training camp. pretty sure that guy ended up being picked up by buffalo for a few years

But what are their head circumferences? That will be the main determiner

Re-read the part about ....in shorts and without pads. There has been no contact in any rookie camp or OTAs. Nor will they have any in June at their next “camp”. There is no Senior Bowl or DVR’d Senior Bowl practices to evaluate Rudolph. So what’s your evaluation based on? If you can’t see any team offering a pick for Dobbs why start a thread about it?

Not getting enough attention in life?

The title of the thread Ike is Suppose Rudolph shines in camp, what are the chances we can trade Jones or Dobbs?

Did you read the word mini-camp? Your agenda sometimes prevents reading....

As for mini camp, Tomlin noticed Rudolph.

Tomlin: Washington, Rudolph ‘Made Some Plays’ During Second Rookie Practice

http://www.Invalid Link - Check SN ...ade-some-plays-during-second-rookie-practice/
“Some draft picks, some noteworthy guys, are showing their pedigree, if you will, which is expected on day two,” Tomlin said Saturday afternoon. “Guys made some plays this morning. Mason [Rudolph] made some plays this morning, James Washington and others.” - Mike Tomlin

According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com via Steelers wide receiver Marcus Tucker, who spent the 2017 season on the team’s practice squad, Rudolph indeed “made some plays” during the team’s Saturday rookie minicamp practice. Tucker was quoted as saying that Rudolph made seven straight completions during team drills during one of the team’s first two practices. And for whatever it’s worth, Tucker added that Rudolph appears to have a strong arm, throws a nice ball and has a strong command of the offensive huddle during practices.

It all depends on who gets hurt. If a primary back up goes down, Jones could have some trade value. He's not an expensive player on the cap.

If the Steelers can't trade anyone, Dobbs is likely out. And those who felt he was a wasted pick can give the final I told you so.

Can't give a "final I told you so" until/unless he's out of the league as there's a chance he becomes a valuable back up or even a starter after he's gone from the Steelers. Remember Urbik? Different position, but, the possibility is there. Especially since QB's (even developmental ones) are more highly valued.

Yes I read camp in the title and minicamp in your subsequent posts. What you can’t seem to grasp is assessment of a player by participation in rookie camp, mini camp, or OTAs shows not one iota of actual live play. The CBA forbids any contact drills. At the most they are in shells and shorts performing skill drills and walkthroughs.

To think our rookie QB who “shined” and “made plays” in one rookie “camp”, and four team practices before OTAs would imply trading either backup is asinine. Anything could happen before training camp when live fire practices begin and preseason games occur. If no one gets injured they could keep 4 until the last Turk day. Who knows, maybe Dobbs outplays Landry (doubtful). Maybe he is cut and clears waivers. Landry is gone after this year.

Just starting a thread about who can be traded (when you already say Dobbs isn’t trade worthy as he is a bust) after a rookie QB showed nothing that hasn’t already been seen is just you trying to feel like you are more than the attention hog you are.

Wouldn't trade Jones cause he's far more valuable to a team like ours(late round playoff contender) than to another team. For $2M he's worth the insurance on Ben.

I'd rather have him than the 5th or 6th we might get in return.

Dobbs is probably valueless at this point and can be placed on our PS if he wants to stay here. He might want to go home to ATL though as he could perhaps fight for their #2 job after an off-season of practice.

I think fans will be pleasantly surprised with Rudolph's mental approach to the game and leadership ability.*

Rudolph is an impressive speaker and wowed some GM's at the senior bowl during interviews.*

If he outplays Landry Jones in camp. I'll take a 5th round pick for Landry Jones.** Jones is an okay back up with things are going right, but when under duress, he's very mistake prone.

We might keep 4 QBs this year.

Drafting JaySam is a roster shaker. It's like when we had Johnson, and he'd count as a FB/RB/3TE. JaySam can easily take that spot, and may even win a slot WR backup role as well. That means a RB/TE/WR is expendable. If it comes down to a competition for roster talent between 6th WR, 3rd TE, 4th QB, you take the most talented player.

The only place where it will bit you is if we get a lot of injuries, then on gamedays, we'd have injured players on the active roster. Happened a few times last year. But only having 5 spaces as opposed to 6 is a big deal in this league.

I highly doubt the Steelers keep 4 QB's. We might keep 9 OL players.

The bolded part is why he has no trade value.

For teams that are smart, you are correct.

But as we know the NFL is full of foolish teams. If a primary back or starter goes down for any team during the pre-season, Jones value goes up.

In reality very few teams have a good back up QB. We were lucky with Batch for years...
