Steelers will reportedly decline Broderick Jones' 5th-year option

The Steelers are declining the fifth-year option for left tackle Broderick Jones, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports.

The move is not unexpected, given it would have paid Jones a fully guaranteed $19.1 million for 2027.

Jones is coming off a neck injury that required a spinal fusion, which leaves uncertainty over his availability for 2026.

He has 38 career starts.

The Steelers selected Arizona State offensive tackle Max Iheanachor with the 21st overall pick, providing them insurance if Jones has to miss time.

They can always retain him if they like what they see this season. I can see why they didn’t want to guarantee money coming off that injury.

I always hate to see when we decline a fifth year option on a player…
That indicates a failure in your organizational process… either the draft process, player development process, or coaching failure… or all of the above..
Or injury potentially impacting playing performance or duration…

I mean, with that surgery , you cant risk it... here is the thing, if he makes it back and looks ok, you can get him on a bridge/ prove it deal.. if someone overpays him you get a nice comp pick out of it because LT money is stupid even for mid guys.. ...if he comes out abd plays absolutely lights out magnificent, and you absolutely want to keep him, you can afford a one year franchise tag to see what you have...

DK gives a pretty good insight and somewhat list of OL players, good listen to.

Also explains a little detail on option.

They had no other choice here with the uncertainty of Jones’ injury but this is alarming that no first round pick hasn’t had his fifth year option picked up since the 2017 draft.
Let’s face it, Colbert in his later years and now Kahn haven’t exactly had the greatest drafts.
The 2022 draft class has left us zero return which stings big time in what would be their fifth season coming up.
Lots of failed number ones over the last several seasons. Jarvis Jones, Devin Bush, no number one in 2020, Naji Harris, Kenny Pickett, Broderick Jones ( not looking good). Also, a number of number two picks.

There is zero chance that Colbert wanted to trade up for Bush, that's a Tomlin pick, trying to get his LB that can cover other teams WR's in his Dollar General Tampa 2. I'm always putting more of the blame on the coach than the GM. IMO the coach says who they want the GM makes it happen. The manager of a restaurant isn't going to go buy the ingredients if the Chef says no.

i remember back when Cooch was saying we should have tested Kendall Simmons for diabetes.
given that, we should have tested Broderick for potential neck injury.

only makes sense, right?

I’ve always said that Colbert and Cowher worked in unison together and had some really good drafts. I’ve also said that Colbert and Tomlin did not work well together and the drafts reflected as much.
Tomlin over the years had far too much control
and influence in building the roster. Lots of mediocre rosters which produced mediocre results.
Never developed a QB to transition from Ben and now we’re paying the price.

we drafted Omar Jacobs in 2006 (Rd 5), Dennis Dixon in 2008 (Rd 5), Landry Jones in 2013, Josh Dobbs in 2017 (Rd 4), and Mason in 2018 (Rd 3).

I'd suggest we were trying to profit as much as possible off Ben's arm for the duration of his career, as anyone drafted would be a backup. Ben only complained about Mason being drafted in 2018 since he was wanting as many weapons as possible since the sun was setting on his career. Imagine how he'd have been if we spent a first on Lamar Jackson in 2018, instead of Terrell Edmunds.

hindsight is 20/20, and that would have been a better use of a 1st round pick, though. Team-wise, we'd have a much different dynamic and that may have led to Ben going elsewhere instead of retiring as a Steeler.

Ben was only 35, coming off a season where he lead the NFL in passing yards in 2017, I'm guessing they thought they had 5 more really good to elite years left, had they known he was going to f his elbow up, they may have gone with Jackson. The real issue is the year Ben blew his elbow out, instead of trading their 1st for Minkah they should've held onto that and tried to trade up to get Herbert or draft Jordan Love. Ben was 37 when that injury happened, so he'd be coming back at 38 from major elbow injury. The second they found out what the injury is, they should've been thinking about the succession plan. Get a guy in there to learn off Ben for a couple years.

Or a neck injury
I totally understand the injury perspective, and it’s probably the leading circumstance that led to declining his offer… but I also wonder if he was not injured would we have picked up his fifth option or not?

IMHO..I say we would not based on performance to date..

that's one idea.
or we could have just taken Jalen Hurts in Rd 2 instead of Mapletron.

still, a different team going forward.

Tomlin was mainly RE-active, waited for something to happen and then acted upon it.

Bringing in someone due to Ben’s injury would have been a PRO-active thing…… and well we seen what Tomlin does with PRO-active…………. Zilch / notA / no way / none.

I’m just glad we have a different coaching staff and hopefully differently ways of thinking. Look, we have two up & comers in Howard and Allar, something we wouldn’t have had in the past.

That 5th year option would have a little over 19 million dollars guaranteed.

I think I’d side with you on this one.

You can’t blame the whole debacle on Broderick as Tomlin jacked him around his first two seasons.

He played decent 3rd, till injury. Had no injury occurred…… who knows his ability to date could be way better.

We have to lick our wounds a bit as fans, choosing to admit that we just came out of an era of poor management in the football side, and still have less than desirable leadership in the front office.

We had no control over it, and are stuck with the results. It is what it is. Here's hoping MM can turn this corner.

Or a neck injury
Let's be honest -- before his injury, Jones wasn't really playing up to the standards of a #14 overall pick in the draft...was he?
