Steelers vs Pats Game Thoughts

Brady completed 18 or 19 passes in a row at one point. 78.1% completion.

None of our DB's broke up one pass. The coverage wasn't even close in some cases.

They even had issues lining up.

Who was covering Edelman? He was targeted 12 times and had 11 catches. He's decent, but not that good!

I heard all this game planing for Gronk? Didn't look like that last night.

They had ZERO WRs that could beat you deep, so we give 15 yard cushions to their WRs... But, to be fair, that's better than using the 0 coverage with did on the most dangerous TE in the game a few times

My thoughts:

-Antonio throwing call was stupid and we had momentum. He def should had thrown it away.

So ******* dumb... Ramming it down their throat and they have no answers... WTF do we do????????????? Double pass trick play... Worst possible call

Did we or did we not have a opportunity to for a TD at the end of that drive at the end of the first half?? Heyward Bey catches the ball we score and Brady doesn't get the ball back. What is the issue? That we didn't get another opportunity? We had one a easy one. Bend over at the waist trust your hands and catch the ball instead of sprawling to the ground trying to body catch.

Upon further thought I can cut DHB a little slack since it was raining pretty hard. Most of the time you couldn't see the rain unless there was a closeup of the sideline. A dry field and he stays in bounds. It is what it is.

A lot of good points brought up by Tape. I really don't see that the sky is falling...not having Martavis for the first 4 games is really the killer. He changes the whole complexion of the offense, especially in the red zone. If we can just survive these first 4 games at 2-2 and reasonably healthy, we will be fine. We aren't going to go into a more difficult environment (considering all factors including headset tampering and the fact that our starting D got no time together as a unit in the preseason) all season.

First off, i give no credit to the Pats. After this game, i am in no way scared or impressed with this mediocre team. Their defense is **** and the biggest success their offense had was steeler blown coverages.

They have 1 weapon, gronk. Gronk may be the NFL MVP. If Gronk gets hurt, the pats are screwed.

All the blown coverages, missed tackles, stupid penalties, 2 missed FGs and the steelers were still in this game until very late.

DeAngelo and DHB were making big plays. Imagine what Bell and Martavis would have done. At full strength, the steelers would have won that game easy.

This looked like preseason game #6. I get it that most teams don't play starters in the last preseason game but when your starting defense barely played any snaps together, you should have played them at least a quarter to work that out.

Why did they trade for Boykin to not play him? It sure isn't because Blake is so great. How badly must Boykin be in practice to not start in this secondary?

Not playing Coates was a mistake. Coates has no idea what he is doing, but he's real good at running fly patterns and getting jump balls. They could have used that against the pats.

Steelers changed holders on the FG after 2 misses. Maybe the holder was to blame for the misses. Didn't he see Ace Ventura?

Must be coincidence that the steeler defense started having communication issues as soo as there were problems with the radios.

Matt Spaeth could have scored on those 2 plays Gronk did. One he was uncovered and the second they let him run free.

WFT was Blake doing on the first Gronk TD where he was uncovered. Golden at least tries to make a play while Blake stands there and watches. If Blake gets in on the tackle, Gronk is probably knocked out of bounds at least.

Clock management is still a joke.

Tomlin wastes a TO because he wants a look at the DHB endzone play when it was obvious on first look that he was clearly out. I saw he was out live.

You end up both hurrying up and then somehow laeving a TO on the board at the half. Takes talent to engineer that scenario.

You are down 2 scores and you held all 3 TO until 1:17 left in the game. At that point, calling a TO is stupid. You should spkie the ball on 1st down because as soon as you are under 2 minutes, if you don't have 3 TO then you need an onside kick.

Then once you did break the seal on the 3 TO then why the hell aren't you calling them? They kept letting the clock bleed play after play.

Edelman looks like the captian of a Hitler youth squad.

Looked like Ben had Speath wide open on the goaline play fake that he threw away.

Haley made some horrible calls in the redzone.

Note to all NFL teams. When you get to the redzone vs the steelers, don't bother running. Just split out 2 TEs to the same side and the steelers will cover them with their 2 slowest LBs for an easy mismatch.

How do you not have that fixed after the last time? Maybe the Steeler offense should use that same play. Then Butler can see how to defend it.

Ben's INT was more on DHB. If he comes back to the ball, it's a pass interference call or he at least breaks up the INT.

Wheaton showing that he will always just be a #2 or 3. He's OK but not a playmaker.

Now for a few thoughts that may seem crazy.

1. I think the turning point of this game was the botched reverse pass by Antonio. They were moving the ball easily. Pats were on their heels and a TD seemed likely as the pats looked confused. Then they throw in that stupid play and it derails the drive. Then they miss the FG and it lifted the pats. It would have been a different game if the Steelers scored a TD on that drive.

2. I feel better about the defense after this game. Sounds crazy but they did a lot of good things. SHazier looks like he will be a star. Dupree made some plays. They did have some pass rush but Brady gets rid of it so fast.

The problem was just all the mistakes. Mistakes that can be fixed. I'm not saying this will be a great defense but they made Brady work for it aside from the blown coverages. I see signs that this defense can be at least middle of the pack and if you couple that with the steeler offense, that is enough to go a long way this year.

I can't agree on the INT being on DHB, two things on that play that Ben has to recognize and not throw it there. One, DHB was blanketed and two, the safety made a bee line to that side of the field immediately after the snap, Ben has to see it and not throw it at all, it was 1st and 10, not 4th and game, throw it away and run 2nd down.

DHB is DHB. He's a guy that's on his 3rd team and that we've paid minimum wage for the past 2 seasons. Be mad at Martavis for getting suspended, not DHB for having below average (for an NFL WR) body control.

1. It may be my selective memory, but was there EVER a steeler defensive back within 2 steps of a New England receiver after he caught the ball?

2. Although there were a few very good tackles, there was a ton of poor tackling all night.

I agree to a point. Our secondary was horrible but we also stayed 10 yards off the line just like DL and the secondary had no clue where they were supposed to be or who should or should not be in. how many times did we have 10 guys on the field? These are things DL rarely let happen.

DeAngelo and DHB were making big plays. Imagine what Bell and Martavis would have done. At full strength, the steelers would have won that game easy.
Yeah, Williams looks quick and I mean real quick. He got the edge time and time again. DHB held on to the ball but that one in the end zone he needed to know where the out of bounds was. Horrible play on his part.

Why did they trade for Boykin to not play him? It sure isn't because Blake is so great. How badly must Boykin be in practice to not start in this secondary? Exactly. I know he is a little behind because he was traded but he couldn't dress? Be the 4th CB? It's football and if he isn't playing why did we cut Fogg at least he can play special teams and catch a ball

Not playing Coates was a mistake. Coates has no idea what he is doing, but he's real good at running fly patterns and getting jump balls. They could have used that against the pats.
I guess I understand since they dressed Murphy.

Laces out Dan!

Must be coincidence that the steeler defense started having communication issues as soo as there were problems with the radios. And when we were on the 1 and the Cheats called out a snap count to get the left side to move. The effing refs should have nailed them for that. And that BS hold or PI on Blake when Edleman pushed off and his arm hooked into Blake. If you are going to push I see no problem with holding with your forearm and bicep.

Matt Spaeth could have scored on those 2 plays Gronk did. One he was uncovered and the second they let him run free. That is saying a lot but he would have definitely been open.

If Blake gets in on the tackle, Gronk is probably knocked out of bounds at least. Huge mess up in coverage. Blake needed to be on Gronk and Golden needed to be over top.

Clock management is still a joke. Not a funny one to me.

See above...

Edelman looks like the captian of a Hitler youth squad.LMFAO

Looked like Ben had Speath wide open on the goaline play fake that he threw away.Pressure was too quick he had time for one read his first and that was Miller. I mean if you are getting rushed up the middle who are you looking at for your one read Miller or Matt?

Haley made some horrible calls in the redzone.Yep has not changed

All Butler has done is convince me we needed to hire outside the organization like we did with Munchak

Ben's INT was more on DHB. If he comes back to the ball, it's a pass interference call or he at least breaks up the INT.Yep was a jump Ball that Bryant wins but DHB loses while in the air and leaves his QB out to dry.

Wheaton showing that he will always just be a #2 or 3. He's OK but not a playmaker.
I think Wheaton would be a stellar #3 but a poor #2 option.

I think the goal line stand when the Cheats cheated the snap count and then DHB going out of bounds on the TD was the end of our chances

I agree once Bryant and Bell are back we will have the an awesome offense and once Pouncey is back our line will dominate. We really need Butler to step up on the defensive side of the ball because we missed tackles, missed coverages, missed players and those are all on him.

That's possible but I don't think he has the horses to do it. Butler might be coming up with good schemes but that doesn't mean the players are executing what they are supposed to do (maybe). I was talking to my neighbor, our 4-time state championship winning high school coach, before the game and he was saying about his team "Good kids, work hard, practice well, but the game starts and they forget half everything. Mistakes kill us." I can see that happening with the Steelers especially with the talent level on defense.

One more thing about the game, stop with the ******* arm tackles. Wrap guys up and get them down. Too many missed tackles on defense last night.

Dude, theres not a single coach in this league that's got clock management down. Believe it or not, every fanbase forum ive visited complain about the coach's clock management. Its an aberration if you think coaches have clock management mastered. Its the fans number one job to second guess the head coach. Our NUMBER ONE JOB.

Horseshit. I've watched MANY NFL games where other coaching staffs dont have NEARLY the amount of trouble that our "esteemed cadre" seem to have just about every gameday.

- The WR pass was an absolute ridiculous call at the time. It wasn't needed and way too early to fool a team like the Pats.
- Where was Boykin? You trade for the guy and he doesn't see the field....no way would he be worse than what we saw last night.
- Antonio Brown is a mismatch for any team. The one handed catch, even the TD catch were beauties.
- Why the hell is Archer on this roster if he's not even taking punts? 90% of kickoffs go out of the endzone and even when he takes one out he only gets to the 17.
- Did anyone miss Pouncey?

I missed him when the LB blew past Wallace and sacked Ben and when Wallace got the holding call on the Williams run. Maybe they also missed him when the blocking calls seem to take so long.

Can we hire a time outs coach?

I'm being serious. Knowing where and when to call time outs just isn't Tomlin's forte. Some coaches are good at it, others are not.

Tomlin himself once said he often does not know the score because he's focusing in other areas.

So why not take this burden away from Tomlin and hire a game management coach, linked in to Ben's helmet?

Thoughts?

I'd bet Brady is the guy who calls the Pat's offensive TO's

Although dissapointed in a loss, I have 200% more confidence in this team after last night.

That was an iffy call. The pats**** get by with much worse holding than that. Also the blocking calls take forever even with pouncey. Every single game for the past few years everybody talks about snapping the ball with 1 second left on the play clock. They have Foster check with Ben then he taps the center. It always takes forever.

I'm with you....that defense blew coverages, missed tackles...yet sacked Brady 3 times (when was the last time we got to him that many times?) and still only gave up 28 points. THEY WILL IMPROVE.

Once we get everybody back....I like our chances, I like this team. Very fast, lots of speed, good running game, good passing game, scobee will be fine.

I'm feeling pretty good honestly.

They sacked him twice. The last time they played them in 2011 they sacked him 3 times. So it isn't that uncommon. He still missed 5 pass all game and had 4 TOs. If he doesn't miss a couple wide open WRs this is a blow out. The defense is out of position, can't tackle, and isn't very talented at all.

that was such a blatantly bullshit "holding" call that I laughed.
I saw worse that wasn't called.

Pats receivers run a lot of pick plays. I thought that was a penalty?

Eh, reading up. Some are, some aren't.

For the record, I don't think they did anything. Dumb and Dumber jumped when the Pats did a well timed line shift - like they frequently do in short yardage, just for this reason. Ben said he complained because he thought there were rules against the D shifting while he was in mid-cadence. Found it surprising that an NFL QB wouldn't know what most casual fans know.
