Steelers vs Pats Game Thoughts

The tackling on this team is horrible. I stopped counting the times Jarvis Jones ended up on the ground, empty handed. Blake and Cortez Allen too.

I can't believe Tomlin's clock management doesn't have its own thread. It's incompetent and inexcusable.

Dude, theres not a single coach in this league that's got clock management down. Believe it or not, every fanbase forum ive visited complain about the coach's clock management. Its an aberration if you think coaches have clock management mastered. Its the fans number one job to second guess the head coach. Our NUMBER ONE JOB.

Should the Steelers hire a time outs coach?

Can we hire a time outs coach?

I'm being serious. Knowing where and when to call time outs just isn't Tomlin's forte. Some coaches are good at it, others are not.

Tomlin himself once said he often does not know the score because he's focusing in other areas.

So why not take this burden away from Tomlin and hire a game management coach, linked in to Ben's helmet?

Thoughts?

There IS no thoughts......youre being ri-damn-diculous....Every fanbase is critical of clock management by their head coach. Don't believe me, go to an opposing teams forums and after a close loss especially, and youll see them slam the coach on clock management.

The clock management problem was a problem of being concerned about leaving them time more than anything. Personally I think teams are over thinking it against the Pats.

Our DB's.

Brady completed 18 or 19 passes in a row at one point. 78.1% completion.

None of our DB's broke up one pass. The coverage wasn't even close in some cases.

They even had issues lining up.

Who was covering Edelman? He was targeted 12 times and had 11 catches. He's decent, but not that good!

I heard all this game planing for Gronk? Didn't look like that last night.

"Not his forte" is an understatement. He's totally inept. Yes, he needs help!

Was he questioned about it in the presser? What was his explanation?

Our team has more issues with time outs than others. We do not preserve the clock when we should and sometimes we blow time outs way too early.

So Collinsworth and Michaels were over-reacting with their disbelief?

My thoughts:
-Not a huge fan of Blake, never was. Start Cortez and Gay, Boykin in the slot
-Why is Golden in there at all on defensive plays...he stinks and is a special teamer
-Heyward, Tuitt, Dupree, and Shazier all looked good.
-Why didn't we call a timeout when Gronk split out and Garvin was covering him. Shazier could have at least spied him.
-Antonio throwing call was stupid and we had momentum. He def should had thrown it away.
-McClendon has never been more than OK. We need a guy who can generate a bigger push at the LOS.

Edelman caught more than half of his passes on 5 yard routes. Brady is very patient and take what is given. Ben is a great QB but very inpatient, for example throwing the ball as far as he can to DHB and has the ball intercepted, there was still 7 minutes left and we were driving. When Ben is playing great, he is throwing 8-10 yard passes and not forcing anything.

We were saving them so that they could be properly mismanaged at the end of the game.

Steelers Secondary Arrested for Impersonating an NFL Team

Well the first week of the season has exposed what we all suspected but didn't want to be true. The Steelers secondary is not made up of NFL caliber players. While William Gay came back to make some plays in this game after being burned early, the rest of the secondary was severely outclassed.
Cortez Allen when he wasn't committing a penalty was getting beat all over the field.Antwon Blake just could not keep up with Julius Edelman (not to mention make a tackle on a running back). Not sure when Robert Golden became our nickel back, but he is no match for Gronk (or any tight end for that matter). We can only shudder at how lostShamarko Thomas must be not to be able to crack the lineup of this group. One has to wonder that if these were the guys who made the team how bad were the guys they cut?

Have you NOT watched other telecasts by Chris and Al in the past ? Is this the only time they've questioned clock management by a coach ? I play fantasy football frequently so im switching games often on Sundays and ill tell you, theres PLENTY of criticism of clock and timeout management in the waning seconds of a half or game. We wish to magnify our problems as if its extreme and isolated in the Burgh. Truth is, its not.

Watch other Sunday night telecasts this season....you will see more criticism of other teams....I guarantee it.

Our DB's suck. They really aught to think about giving Boykin "SOME" playing time and bringing Grant back up to the big boy team. Cut Blake and sit Cortez's *** down.
All that said, it's week 1. Hopefully we see some improvement over the course of the season.
I'd still cut Blake though. He was terrible last night. No way Grant could be worse and Grant is the younger player with more upside.

I've said all along that Gay is the only DB who is halfway decent but he can't cover everyone by himself. Time for Coach Lake to suit up and get on the field himself.

No doubt they will improve. Cockrell will bring some physicality to the position once he gets up to speed and I believe he is a player. I was high on him coming out of college. Boykin will be getting more time with Cortez and Blake getting less time. I think Golson could have really been an upgrade over Cortez and Blake this year too.

You really need to use the TOs on defence when the opposition can run 40 seconds off the clock between plays. Not sure what's so difficult to understand. I agree with the OP.I think it's time that football has a game/time management coach. Much like a bench coach in baseball who just sidles up to the manager and bounces ideas. What happened last night was unacceptable. That other teams also do it is no excuse.

We are who we thought we were - lousy defense, cannot score in the red zone, poor coaching
They are who we thought they were - Brady, Gronk, finding new ways to cheat

We were saving them so that they could be properly mismanaged at the end of the game.

My question is, why is there not one safety in on defense when you know their likely to pass the ball. When we play the pats next time, I'd consider shadowing Gronk with Shazier. I think Shazier could slow him down a bit, he's faster than Gronk and very athletic.

P.S. Shazier is going to be the next great Steeler's LB

My two cents, just convert drives into TDs. We do that and we will be a very good football team.

You couldn't be more wrong... The elite teams all manage the clocks well and better than the idiot we have coaching

- Wheaton's tiptoe sideline catch was very SBXLIII/Santonio-esque
- When does Carnell Lake shoulder some of the responsibility for poor DB play? I know players play and coaches coach, but we have mostly veterans in the secondary who should have the basics down.
- Will Allen and Willie Gay are not spectacular, but they may just be our best DBs. That speaks volumes to our talent evaluation and drafting.
- The PI on Cortez Allen vs Edelman was bs. Edelman had the more blatant hand/arm fighting.
- Mike Mitchell is no Ryan Clark.
- I like what D.Williams brings, but Bell is a pro-bowl level RB who needs to be on the field to give opposing coaches things to plan around.
- Networks should just not broadcast the kickoffs and sell that time to advertisers (+ extra kitchen/bathroom time for viewers). What a pointless moment in any game. Stupid rule that takes so much excitement and the possibility of a game-changing play. Go back to how it was. (Make dudes like Dri earn their paycheck).
