Excellent breakdown of the Steelers vs Patriots. We definitely had our chances in this game. We made mistakes and the Patriots capitalized on them. The Patriots also made mistakes the difference is we didn't capitalize the way they did. Love to read breakdowns like these cause it always shows the smallest thing that stopped a play from being successful. False step here missed tackle here.. big game this week have to have it. San Fran will not be a walkover

Brady could see “chaos” on the Steelers’ defense

Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski’s three-touchdown game on Thursday night was aided in large part by major mistakes in the Steelers’ secondary, with Gronkowski being left open on multiple occasions. Patriots quarterback Tom Brady says those problems on the Steelers’ defense were easy to see.

“I saw he was uncovered and I can usually get a good sense of when there’s not great communication going on between the defense. I typically want the ball in my hands at that point."

We had no one covering him on 2 or 3 of his TD's. I have said this numerous times but why the heck didn't they have Shazier shadow him similar to a good running QB or a good receiving RB out of the backfield? Wherever Gronk went, Shazier should have followed. Shazier has the speed and size to either give him a little cushion and then cover him or hit him at the line and then cover him. Even if Shazier would have lost a step on him by hitting him at the line, he is faster than Gronk and fast enough to make up for a step or two. Just made no sense that we weren't even paying attention to the best player on their O. Dumb, dumb, dumb!

Because sometimes it hard to match-up players like that. Depending on formations and motion responsibilities change quickly

Makes me feel better that Week One is over and we're preparing for SF.

My concern this week - will Coach Butler employ a defensive scheme to contain a running QB??? His mentor, Coach LeBeau, struggled MIGHTLY with that...and then there's Vernon Davis...

Yes Davis can definitely do some Gronk type things. Such as lining up wide. So we better have the confusion we saw Thursday fixed cause I'm sure the 49ers will try to exploit us to see if we fixed the issues. One of the issues with players like Gronk and Davis is if they motion wide how do you defend it. In base or nickle?? Base your linebackers may have to cover them in situations they're not comfortable. In Nickle you better be able to still be able to stop the run and DBs are still too small to cover them. That's what makes them special.

I like what I saw Denver do with their TE coverage - in particular, that last play where the safety played over the top and the LB played underneath. Flukko lobbed it up and - BINGO - INT (yes, it was a great play) but, it was MOST IMPORTANTLY covered and would have been a spectacular TD, if caught...

This confusion and neglecting of assignments has been occurring on defense, with various frequency, since the 2013 season.

Under the current CBA, there are virtually no contact drills during the week anymore, leaving just standing around in shorts, rehearsing scheme and assignments, which prompts the question of what the **** they're doing at the South Side training facility during the week?

Either the Steelers defenders are collectively dumb as a stump, or the coaches are doing a piss poor job of conveying the scheme each week. The truth probably lies in some combination of the two.

I won't disagree - but, I do think that the "radio problems" attributed to some of that confusion.

I don't work for the Steelers, I'm just a fan, but I really find it super hard to believe that a team that had FOUR MONTHS to prepare for this game just "forgot how to cover the TE". Yes, it sound like an excuse; and I know that the defense is young---but, there has not been ONE REPORT of communication problems in the games from yesterday. Hell, not even from the college games on Friday or Saturday either...

I find it very suspicious that the NFL is using the "weather and bad technology" to cover this one up.

We shall see as our next game is at home - I'm praying that I'm wrong about my speculations...

I would be more willing to attribute it to the communication controversy if this was something we've rarely seen from the Steelers' defense in recent years.

I've lost count of how many completely blown coverages/missed assignments they've had the past few seasons. Something is fundamentally wrong, as they too often have difficulty lining up, especially when an opponent picks up the pace via no huddle, forcing them to read the formation and line up quickly.

It's gotten to the point where the coaches need to either greatly simplify the scheme, or reassess how they implement it in their preparation each week, as regardless of the reason, the players are just not grasping it well enough.

I know what you are saying, but one person's responsibility should have been gronk. He is the most dangerous guy on the field someone should have been assigned to follow him everywhere. Maybe they need to simplify the D and slowly build up.

Ya think?

I hear you but we knew going in Gronk was going to be tough to handle. The game started just as we thought. If Shazier follows Gronk wherever he lines up and that is his man for the game, it is not that difficult. Gronk almost never stays in to block, if at all.

The funny thing is "none of us" know what Coach Butler employed Shazier to do on Thursday. We threw it around a lot, myself included, that that is what "we" thought the best match up would have been. Obviously, he, the DC, thought otherwise...

Well kids I just heard on 93.7 The Fan that Brady couldn't wait to take advantage of the defense that he said looked totally confused out there. As I said in another post, all 11 guys cannot be this bad and it has to do more with the communication and the coaching or lack of it. We'll see against the Niners come Sunday and if the confusion continues then one has to start wondering if this goes deeper, perhaps the new coach.

At least I'm partially right in my controversial thinking:ty:

I think it's the same. Instructing right now, I lost 9 kids last year and have 10 of 14 in new positions this year. For four years I had a well-oiled machine and this year not so much. I haven't changed and it's not like the kids aren't trying, they just don't have the same talent level. Unlike my situation, the Steelers get to hand pick their talent.
