Steelers vs falcons Initial Thoughts

The Warren fumble, and miscues I mentioned earlier, all contributed to this being closer than it should have been. I’m with BLITZ, I was never concerned they had this game in the bag, and the score/stat sheet didn’t tell the whole story.

I’m pretty sure this defense will be historic if they get to play banged up 3rd string QBs all season, **** they may even get a playoff win or two in that scenario.

lol I’m not gonna go that far, but in my eyes, there was a bit to be encouraged about for week one, and not the close play down to the competition type game we were used to seeing with Tomlin.

Exactly. And when you take into account the Warren fumble and all the dropped passes and PIs ignored; this game could have been a blowout. We'll be fine. They should have played starters in the pre season.
 
The oline looked awful. Rodgers was throwing off his back foot a lot and the run game was putrid again

Everything else looked markedly improved: more aggressive on defense, better front 7 play on defense, solid in the secondary except for one bust on the TD off the WR screen, THROWING OVER THE MIDDLE, MUTH LIVES, pushing the ball down the field.

Best of all the offense comfortably ended the game running out the last few minutes to a kneel down, although it was thru the air, I can’t remember the last time we comfortably killed the clock to end a game like that

The result was a close win but I see the chance to be way better this year, a couple of caught balls and the refs calling pass interference and this is a comfortable win

The p*triots will be a tougher test-screw them with a RED HOT poker

Barely squeaked by a bad Falcons team with a 3rd string QB was quintessential Tomlin style playing down to a weak azz tomato can opponent

Love the win, but that effort won’t do vs any solid NFL squad. It’s early tho and it was just the first preseason game for most of the guys that matter.

That’s what I’ve been saying: the score/stat sheet don’t reflect what transpired on the field. We weren’t lucky that Nick “old as Moses” Folk missed a couple kicks for us to be victorious. ATL was lucky to even be in that spot. They did nothing, offensively. Rush was sacked 5x, and we blitzed the least of every team this past week. Their offense generated more than 30 yards on only 2 of their drives. They scored their td because of a gift to, and sloppy execution on that play. Robinson didn’t run roughshod through the defense, he only put up his #’s because he was their only player, and they kept feeding him the ball. Yes, Watt wrecked the game, but that’s what he’s paid $41m to do, and what we ALL have been wanting to see since last year.
Offensively, the ground game was bad, but they churned out yardage when needed late in the game. People that are ragging on AR for his performance, are doing so because they just disliked bringing him back/him in general. Because I don’t think we saw him move/throw like that at all last year. Look at the passing chart: you’d have to go back 10 years to see us using the field like that. Also, his #’s should’ve been better if not for DK’s drops, Roman’s drops, the multiple missed DPI’s that were huge plays (and blatant, no question). No, he wasn’t perfect, but he was light years better than last year. And the offense seemed to start catching up in the second half, if not for shooting themselves in the foot.
Sure, the game was also lovable because of these things, but I never felt like the team wasn’t in control. The ebbs and flows of it all just looked like a better product than what Tomlin put together last year (and past multiple years). More than that, this team while happy to have the W, didn’t seem satisfied with just getting the win (from the coaches to the players), unlike watching MT blow kisses at the screen after beating some sub.500 team.

So the storyline is simply the NFL’s highest paid defense was able to handle a banged up 3rd string QB. If they hadn’t it would be a helluva an indictment. The D did what they were supposed to do….the offense not so much.

Guys couldn’t catch or block, 2 huge fundamentals And ATL was missing their top 2 edge threats. The only good thing the offense really did all day is look like an intelligent man was calling meaningful plays AND the run game came up big closing out the game. 1 run fueled drive is better than 0.

There are building blocks which is good and a sloppy performance produced a W (vs an undermanned opponent) which is always good:

It's just one game so this guy's comparision to last year is not completely correct, but the flinging of the ball toward the middle/ middle deep and passing on what would normally be running situations is different from Tomlin and Co.
 
I am still thinking about my initial thoughts
