Steelers trade for Vance McDonald

Seems odd on San Fran's part. They just signed him to 5 year contract extension with a 7 mill bonus in December.
They essentially gave up 7 million to move up from the 5th to the 4th round.

I heard their new GM Lynch wasn't a fan. And then they took George Kittle in the 4th round this year and he's apparently showing very well.

Credit where credit is due, simply an outstanding move by Colbert. If he can add some DB help next few days, that would be icing on the cake.

Mike Tomlin on trade for Vance McDonald: Steelers TEs “not consistently varsity enough”

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin didn't sugar coat it when asked about the team's trade for Vance McDonald on Tuesday. Of the Steelers' trio of tight ends, Tomlin said they were "not consistently varsity enough."

He then called McDonald an "NFL-caliber tight end."

"We're not going to anoint him in any way," Tomlin said, via Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. "We're going to put him in uniform like the rest of them and continue to allow them to sort themselves out. It's reasonable to expect the guys that are here to respond positively in the right way to his presence and elevate their play."

Jesse James, Xavier Grimble and David Johnson have combined for 89 career catches for 816 yards and seven touchdowns. McDonald made 64 catches for 866 yards and seven touchdowns in his four seasons with the 49ers, who made him a second-round pick in 2013.

Fowler speculated that McDonald and James eventually could split first-team reps, with Grimble as a situational tight end and Johnson remaining as a key blocker. That is if the Steelers choose to keep four tight ends.

Now trade Jesse to the Browns for Haden

a former 2nd round pick and gave up nothing for him. Maybe he can live up to his pedigree and click with Ben. Nice size and potential speed, but apparently can't catch a cold.

We do have to eat his $30 million 5-year contract, don't we?

No - we only pay $2.1M

Salary cap implications of Vance McDonald trade

McDonald signed a contract extension last December, marking one of the final roster decisions general manager Trent Baalke would make. The deal was for five years and worth up to $35 million, but as with virtually every NFL contract, it was worth considerably less.

The deal was actually for three years and $19.7 million, with team options for years four and five. It included a $7 million signing bonus, which for cap purposes prorated to $1.4 million per season over the life of the deal.

For cap purposes, a trade right now operates like a post-June 1 roster cut.

That means the 49ers would carry one season’s worth of dead money on the 2017 salary cap, and the remaining on the 2018 salary cap.

McDonald’s $7 million signing bonus was paid in 2016, so the first year of proration was 2016. That means the 49ers will carry $1.55 million in dead money in 2017, and then $4.2 million in dead money in 2018.

McDonald is owed a fully guaranteed $2.1 million this season, but the Steelers pick up that guarantee with the trade.

Have you seen the QB's this guy has had. Not saying he will be pro bowl but excited to see what will happen once he has someone who can actually play quarterback.

? is he going to GB, Atl, or Ne?

lol....had to do it....!!!!!

So... I thought we were going to keep three TE's before this trade. My question is this... how many do we keep now? I am guessing four... with three RB's (plus Nix)?

Sent from my SM-G935V using Steeler Nation mobile app

I was thinking we could have the last pick in the 4th and they could pick first in the 5th depending on how this season shakes out?or am I mistaken?

Theoretically. I was just pointing out how far apart they actually were last year. Depends on how many 4th round comp picks are handed out.

So let me understand this, because it seems too good to be true. We get a potential beast at TE for next years 4th round pick, and we get the 49er's 5th?

And it only costs 2.1 million?

Hope the physical pans out.

He runs a helluva better then the other TEs on the Steelers

This is a Major upgrade and not sure why SF did this but like adding a big weapon to this offense we get an upgrade now fine another piece for the secondary.

probably the injuries, I remember last season he was breaking out and I picked him in FF, then got injured and did nothing for my team

I think we will find that help might come as teams make their cuts,

I was just thinking this morning, that the Steelers should grab a TE. and low and behold! Nice move, he's already better than Green, because he can put on a helmet!

I am disappointed a bit in Jessie James, I thought he was going to have a stronger training camp. He didn't. That's why I thought X-man was going to get first team reps. Now he's not.

I will say, I do not want 4 TEs. I'd rather have 6-7 WRs than carry a 4th TE. The talent isn't comparable. Right now. Xavier is on the hot seat, since he and McDonald have the same skillset.

The rep Mcdonald had, at least among 9rs fans, was for being injury prone, big time drops, running some wrong routes, and generally not being the player they wanted on the team.... I'm not sure he is going to be the guy some here are thinking he is, but its worth a gamble... or maybe a grimble... lol

Even with the balance, those 49er QBs suck!

I think Grimble is gone. We'll see....................

I'd rather have McDonald, James, Grimble as the TE's with Nix as FB than any other combination at those spots.

the one report I read had Johnson of having the most steady camp out of all the TE's. Not sure he will be as a easy cut as some might perceive.
