Steelers sign Herbig to HisBig extension

Outdated and flawed? How is that, exactly? Seems to me that the Texans and Broncos had the two best defenses in the league last year.

The Falcons were second in sacks yet they gave up 401 points, which was 19th...sounds a bit incongruous. I guess their sacks didn't kill the right drives. But they started keeping that stat in 1982, so I guess it must be better.

Yes, gross total yardage allowed is not terribly useful. If your offense stinks and goes 3-out 5 times a game, your D will wear down. If you have a great offense and build leads, teams will pile up useless yards in garbage time.

The 2001 Pats were 6th in scoring defense, 25th in YPG allowed. I'd take that 10 out of 10 times vs. the converse.

You had to go back 25 years to cite an example which supports your argument? Cool.

Of course total yards isn't the perfect metric. Of course there's going to be anomalies. But generally speaking, giving up less yards is better. Period.

Eh, that one just came easily. Here's more:

2023 Carolina, 4th in yards allowed, 29th in pts allowed.

Good defense?

2017 Pats, 29th in yards allowed, 5th in pts allowed.

2011 Pats, 31st in yards allowed, 15th in pts allowed.

I think Khan has managed the cap very well.

I also think the jury is massively still out on him.

Quick name an elite impact player on this team who would be a shoe in starter on 80% of the rest of the league teams the last two seasons not named Cam Heyward…

Who are the exciting up and coming stars on this roster based on their early body of work? I have Porter Jr., Frazier, and Fautanu, and that’s probably being a bit generous and optimistic, there should be more…

I think the next 2 years will be telling on Khan, if the players he’s picked continue to be mediocre under a new coach it’s time to start asking questions, but we all know Rooney is very slow to change

Nice. 4 examples in 25 years...3 of which are the Patriots. The 2023 Panthers are indeed a good exception (although their offense did give up 2 pick-sixes and a fumble returned for a touchdown, along with a punt return TD allowed on special teams).

Here's the top ten defenses in total yards allowed from last year, followed by their points allowed ranking:

1) Texans #2
2) Broncos #3
3) Vikings #7
4) Browns #14 (which of course included a grand total of SIX touchdowns adding 40+ points NOT allowed by their defense)
5) Chargers #9
6) Seahawks #1
7) Bills #12
8) Patriots #4
9) Saints #16
10) Chiefs #6

The difference in the two categories was within five spots for eight of those teams. None were more than ten. No top ten defense was outside of the top 14 in points allowed. Total yards allowed don't seem outdated and useless. Still looks like a pretty good general indicator of how defenses are performing.
