Steelers sign Herbig to HisBig extension

All I can say is if he wants to test the market, it is his right to do so. He seems like a fine young man and best of luck.
He likes Pittsburgh I see no need for him to test a market when the Steelers have no problem paying.

Joey will get paid.

I’d venture $24 to $27 mil / 5yr / $56 - $63 mil guaranteed.

Some fans will think his contract will demand a Watt or Highsmith trade but it doesn’t impact this year so really they don’t have to move on from the fab three in the near future if they don’t wish to..

This defense is going to remain the highest paid defense in the NFL.

I’d also venture to say we will get better return for the money spent.

Just the scheme change alone will make a giant difference.

You must be awfully certain Herbig will give you similar production to prime Watt? It’s an every down thing at that point. Herbig isn’t just helping another guy get some wind or being used in certain situations. Depth will be a concern going forward. All of that factors into the equation. Sure, trade the franchise’s all-time sack leader, be my guest, it’ll give someone else the chance to break it. It’s a tough contract to move, but, if anyone can accomplish such a monumental feat, it’s the great Khan.
They guarenteed the guy 40 some million dollars and are set to pay him 100 million over 4 years. Does it really matter what I think. How much money are you going to spend on edge? So whatever I get a better deal on. Watt or Highsmith I take. But that takes into account what they csn give me and how much they make.

Garret had 3 times as many sacks as Watt. I’m not sure the Steelers could get a 2nd for him.
Last year. Last year.
For their carreer they are within ten total. And Watt has many many more forced fumbles and ints. And the Browns got a very relevant player, a first, a second and a third.

or more........Stelers seem to like to pay therir own top $$$$.

You cannot let good, young pass rushers walk. Glad the Steelers got a deal done. Porter will be next and I'd work hard to get more reasonable deals with Washington and Benton. Jones didn't work out, but the rest of that draft was a home run and hopefully the Steelers can keep those four.

I also think some are undervaluing Watt's trade value. A contender in need of a pass rusher with Watt's star power will command more than some think even at his age with his contract.

I think the big money hit comes in next season for Herbig. You can bet one of the other two contracts probably won't be in the books in 2027
Exactly by the time you are looking at him to show starters money, he will be a starter. At one of the other pass rushers expense..

From NFL.com:
"The Steelers invested heavily in franchise legend T.J. Watt last year, handing him a three-year, $123 million extension, and have already dedicated four years and $68 million to Alex Highsmith in a deal signed in 2023. With Herbig's $25 million per year salary now included, the Steelers have dedicated $83 million per year to the three rushers..."

How is the "big money hit" going to come next year, when $42 million of his contract is guaranteed?

Let's see how they structure that contract, as it's an extension from his current contract. This season he should keep his rookie salary plus the bonus divided among the total years, so 45M/5 would be 9 extra millions to his rookie salary

The guarantees don't necessarily have to relate to current payments. Base salary and/or roster/option bonuses that are payable in 2027 and 2028 (or even 2029 and 2030, although less likely) can be guaranteed.

I don’t think that “larger deal” is in Pittsburgh. That is the assumption we are all operating under, it is a Steelers fansite. At the end of the day, he’s played one good season. You all comp him with guys like Pat Surtain. Pat Surtain was the best cornerback at every level of football that he’s played. I just don’t see that sort of deal. Not all contracts reset the market for a given position, it’s a reality. 4+ years? What are you his agent?
Like I said…..a little friendly wager could be in play here. Giddy up.

And no…I’m not his agent. Just an informed observer.
McDuffie got 4 years 124 million with 100 guaranteed. 50 million fully guaranteed at signing. Do I think he is as good or gets the same……no I don’t.
But like it or not, contracts are based on comps. I think Joey gets at minimum 4 years 100 million and probably gets more like 28 a year.

All told he’s going to be a very well off young man.
Joey……triple bag it. Nothing good happens after midnight. And for heaven’s sake hide your money well, and don’t get married for another 15 years.
