Yep. Got a text from Steelers that they signed Clifton Geathers to a one year contract. I believe we had this guy on our roster late in the season but he never played.

Won't sign a Carriker/Carrington to play DE, but let's sign this dillhole?

Steelers re-sign defensive end Clifton Geathers

The Steelers re-signed defensive end Clifton Geathers to a one-year contract, the team announced today. Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Geathers signed with the Steelers on December 1, 2014, but was inactive for four regular-season games and the lone postseason contest.

The six-year pro has played in 37 games (one start) since entering the NFL as a sixth-round draft selection (186th overall) of Cleveland in 2010.

He has spent time with Miami (2010), Dallas (2010-11), Indianapolis (2012), Philadelphia (2013) and Washington (2014).

WE are going all out to help the defense, Tomlin quotes offense is on threshold of being great, looks as if the defense as well but the opposite directions. We better score high numbers.

I love how signing a camp body is somehow a negative. This guy is journeyman / fringe roster player. He was signed for the minimum. It has virtually no impact on the salary cap, whether he makes the team or not. I didn't think he would be re-signed but don't see how this is a reason to *****. We have to bring 80 bodies to camp.

I get that there is little to no risk and the signing itself in a vacuum doesn't bother me. What bothers me is that there were plenty of opportunities to bring in guys at reasonable prices that would actually make a difference and we sat on our hands. It made us think essentially we are sitting out free agency, at least on the defensive side of the ball. Then come to find out, we're not sitting it out, we can still sign people, just none that matter.

Dude, the war is over. We have already sat out free agency. There is no one of any quality still available. And I'm not sure how many quality free agents were really available at "reasonable prices". The crop of free agents (after the wave of franchise tags) was mediocre as hell and nearly every team had cap room to spare --- wait two years and nearly every "reasonably-priced" 2015 free agent will be cut and put back on the market in 2017.

we could sign William Perry in his ******* prime for vet minimum and the self-adminstered proctologists of the board would **** all over it.

The Fridge. Loved that dude. I loved that defense of the Bears of 85. Some bad dudes on that defense. Man has the game changed.

Some of the Steelers best players have been certifiable, and have been cut by other teams. Some just mature into NFL players later... so long as he can contain his issues and aggression to the players on the opposing side, all is good. If not, or if he is just a camp body, then it is what it is.

Yeah I get it, it's over now. But when we brought in those corners for visits, I woulda felt a lot better going into the draft if we had inked one of them. I was also hoping for a month leading up to free agency that we were going to look at Orakpo, and then when Worilds retired that position became even more of a need, but we didn't even bother. We were okay with that dude from the CFL. So yeah, the war is over now, but I would have felt a lot better about the whole thing had the Steelers just said "hey we're not signing anyone else, we're happy with the roster headed into the draft." But then they turn around and add bodies. So they're not done, they're just done looking for guys who will actually play. And I just do not think we have a playoff-ready set of CBs and OLBs even if we hit a home run at both positions in the draft. I would feel a lot better had we brought in someone.

Anyone who pushes Cam Thomas closer to the exit door I am all in favor of. I hope one of our younger players drafted or undrafted will be able to make a positive contribution as a rotational player for depth.

Because there's NOTHING ELSE to COMPLAIN ABOUT until draft day...

which CB or OLB could we have gotten for the ******* minimum?

Not sure, but "*******" for the minimum, needs defining...............

Salute the nation

How about what could we have had for gathers + cam thomas + say another million or million and one half. Aggie made a good point we know what Thomas brought, and I do not recall anyone considering him good. We know that no one wanted Gethers when we signed him and he is not likely to make the team unless we have an injury. I really doubt this free agent work will do anything other than waste money and cap space. But if we pick up enough really bad guys that are free agents they will make all these fantastic draft picks look better right? sarcasm alert for those with problems detecting it.

The steelers should begin budgeting some of the cap every year for a high quality free agent. I am not advocating trying to buy a franchise player but a top level player. Someone worthy of say the money they threw at a player like Worilds for example. That kind of money could do a lot to add something to the team. It gives the team to bring in a player regardless of the position the steelers are in the draft and they can target a specific position. This season we did not get one. In seasons past we have and they made a difference, Von Olhoffen, Farrior, Gay, Harrison are some that were free agents from other teams and made a big difference. Yes, I know that Willie and James were here before but they have both made important contributions after they left and returned.

my understanding is a player for the minimum doesnt make much of a difference to the cap. If you're talking Cam Thomas and our leftover cap space, then yes, I totally agree. Cam Thomas should be gone. Even before Geathers was brought in.

I think they were not looking hard enough or trying hard enough this year Superman. There were players we needed that baring some medical issues or performance issues could have been signed not all of them but maybe one and that would have been a huge help at either LB or DL or CB or maybe Safety. Keep in mind the Steelers are saying Troy is not in their plans this year and that also involves another need and salary savings. Now maybe none of the guys were a good risk from a medical standpoint but they did get signed other places, and maybe they just did not have the money needed but they should have had some just from the players that left.

We sure do need to have some guys make a jump this year if we expect the team to move forward, I think it is a lot to expect at this juncture.

Might as well change the name of the team to the JAGS (Just A Guys).
I don't think there was anyone available in free agency that 1) we needed and 2) we could afford under the cap and 3) was a serious upgrade over what we have. If someone doesn't meet all three of those criteria then there is no point in considering him. Gotta take your chances in the draft. Which kinda scares me.

The Steelers do not build their team via free agency. Period. End of thread...
Right, that much is obvious. But the stubborn adherence to that, when you can add one or two cheap pieces making you feel a lot better going into the draft, can be problematic. No one is asking to build a team this way, just to supplement here and there where you have obvious deficiencies that can't be overcome through the draft, at which we have sucked lately anyway..

Let me know if you get a text saying they cut Cam Thomas and saved 2 million in cap space.
