Steelers select WR Sammie Coats

I was so excited to see this!!! I love Sammie. Yeah, he makes drops that makes the Auburn fan (me) yell expletives at the TV. But he is a GOOD kid and deserves a shot somewhere. Glad it's the Steelers that gave him the chance.

So in the second round we picked a CB who is probably too short, and in the third round we picked a receiver with bad ball skills. Feels like a normal Steeler draft.

The Ravens drafted a receiver like that too. Teams must know that it is fixable.

If a guy has been a wide receiver his entire life, all the way through college, and the basic skill of that position still needs to be fixed, I'd prefer that some other team have a go at it, especially in the early rounds.

I bet you are! Laughing about the theme of our last two picks. Both guys gave Bama fits!!! Ballers.

But the Steelers have had a good return on many of their WRs. A value round 1 pick in 3, not sure we get better value than that.

It isn't like he didn't make some damn good catches.....

some might prefer to pass, I prefer them to find talent and mold it if possible.

A fan can't say he isn't talented... at least that's a starting point.

I think he can be molded into something special, guess we will have to see which way it goes...

I want to be excited about this pick because he reminds of TO. BUT it is hard to ignore the drops. So many drops.

I think the concentration is there, acceleration is great, routes look crisp, but his hands are terrible.

I hear ya, but on the flip side, a major college program saw something so special in him to start him. Let's hope for the best..

Senquez gave Auburn fits too!! When I saw that we got him, I had flashbacks to the Ole Miss-Auburn game. Not pretty.

Sammie coats is an interesting pick... We went into the playoffs with a starting running back who had been wth the team only for HOURS... And we are drafting a wr in the third round? Oh ya oh ya I forgot we drafted a rb last year in the 3rd.. dri archer.... That's right... Never mind....

You obviously just love to hate on our draft picks. Which is fine I guess.....but I do believe we signed a RB in FA. I don't really see what your point is.

We signed DeAngelo Williams.. or did you miss that?

Being a guy that watches a ton of SEC games I'm very familiar with Sammie. He has great size for a WR and very good speed. But he is a carbon copy of Bryant. He's a long strider and a deep target. I don't understand why people are talking about him in the slot. He isn't a quick twitch guy.

My biggest issue is with his hands and what I call "weird speed". When you watch him run he isn't fluid. He changes speed (up and down) on long routes. There are times Ben is going to go postal on him. He can run 5 different speeds on the same route. It causes the QB to wonder WTF he is doing. It also makes the QB look like he is over or under throwing him. It's just strange to watch at times.

Overall he has great size and speed. He really needs work with his hands, routes, hips and getting his speed more fluid.

1st round talent with 4th round hands...was hearing his name on day one from the talking heads. I love his talent though...what an athlete!

Deangelo Williams ring a bell?

Saving his best for the best

Sometimes, a player's college stats can be inflated after big games against lesser competition. That wasn't the case with Coates, who had arguably his best college football game against the best team he faced as a junior. Matched up against then-No.1 Alabama, Coates pulled down five catches for 206 yards and touchdowns in 2014.

In 2013, Coates literally turned the tide with a 39-yard touchdown reception with 32 seconds left in Auburn's eventual win over Alabama. In the Tigers win over Missouri later that season in the SEC Championship Game, Coates tallied 94 receiving yards that included a 38-yard touchdown reception.

Coates has seemingly always had the ability to rise to the occasion in big games; he earned the Alabama 2A State Championship Game MVP award by leading Leroy High School to the title with two touchdown catches in the title game.

We are very good at drafting WRs and also very reluctant to pay a high price to keep them when they hit free agency. So by paying a lot of money for Antonio Brown, we need cheap, young WRs to play with him. Plus we use plenty of 3 WR sets and some with 4. Drafting Coates had nothing to do with Wheaton.

Not sure this is 100% accurate. They might have wanted to add strength with strength.

But if Bryant overtakes Wheaton,. And Coates manages to overtake Wheaton..... when that contract comes up the FO might not feel the need to resign him.

I know we are playing with IFS but it isn't out of the realm of a possibility.

Or they might get to sign him on the cheap. There will likely be 3 or 4 wide outs on the field lots of times and if someone gets dinged up a bit they will have a good spare. Looks like a good plan. The other thing I like about this option is when DHB is gone from the team which might be next year or the year after it looks like his replacement is on the team at the very least.

I had horrible flashbacks to Limas Sweed when his name was called. But upon further consideration I'm ok with this pick. He is your ultimate boom or bust guy but if he booms it will be a nuclear explosion.

Seems like a great kid

I don't think this pick had anything to do with the team being disappointed in Wheaton. I think it had to do with 1) us being only 3 deep at WR (DHB is really just a special teams guy) that's not deep for a team that loves 3-WR sets and 2) they had a high grade on Coates, like mid-2nd round.

good points. I wonder if that has anything to do with the QB he had to work with last year?
TMC says Coates reminds him of a younger TO - with his head screwed on correctly.
If that's the case, then we may have gotten a huge steal.

Bringing in DeAngelo Williams pretty much assured that we were not going to take a RB in the draft unless someone special (Gurley) was there...even then we'd likely have traded out of that position.

It could be the QB. It is just strange to watch. You usually see this with guys who have trouble tracking the ball. Sometimes because of eye sight that isn't 20/20 or other issues. Or maybe he is just use to having a bad QB throwing to him so he is guessing where the ball is going to be. Either way he needs to fix that or Ben is going to be pissed. You'll see Ben yelling at him to keep running.

TMC maybe right about T.O. I didn't watch T.O. in college. Right now he reminds me Bryant.

I was hoping they wouldn't draft a RB and they didn't so I'm happy with that. No RB they draft is going to see much time at all unless there is a rash of injuries. If that happens a rookie isn't going to save the season.

He's a real good dude...and a phenomenal athlete. I watched his video on YouTube, it was 5 minutes of highlights and the guy caught at least 20 long TD's against SEC opponents. A couple of them were 50/50 balls in traffic between two defenders... a couple of them he just flew past defenders into the end zone. He passes the eye test for me. When you see the highlight tape you would never guess he had so many drops because all the tape I saw I never saw the ball move once it got yo his hands. I think the reports of bad hands are exaggerated.. Personally I think it's just a matter of concentration and involvement in the game. I would be surprised if he can't be coached up. He's a good person who seems to be intelligent and he has all the physical attributes of a #1 NFL wideout. The sky is truly the limit with this kid. I believe he'll take full advantage of the opportunity in front of him and run with it.
