I think it's one of the few picks that actually looks at gratification in 2016 or 2017 rather than gratification in 2015.
This team is headed towards some very tough financial decisions on players and where we use our cap resources. The decision not to draft any offensive lineman seems to indicate they want to sign both Beachum and DeCatro to long term contracts. That's expensive when you combine it with the money Pouncey and Gilbert are making. When you get 4 O-lineman in 2nd contracts it certainly helps on continuity and experience, but it's expensive.
Then we have Brown and his likelihood to get a new contract next season (which I agree is early, but it's going to happen).
And we know Bell has to be in the team's future as well.
So that means TE (after Heath Miller) and #2/#3 WR and RG are likely going to be "rookie contract" players. At least for a while to make the money work out. We drafted a WR and TE with potential and talent to be starters in this league in this draft and that will help possibly man those positions with "rookie contracts" and save money to elsewhere.
When you have a franchise quarterback, you have to realistically ask yourself how many other starting position (and that really includes #3 WR, #2 RB, a 4th DL and #5 DB so that's 24 players) are in "rookie contracts" to allow you to pay for all the players you anticipate wanting to keep into 2nd and 3rd contracts.
