Steelers select WR Demarcus Ayers WR Houston

Let me get this right. This guy is 5'9" tall and ran just a 4.71 as a wide receiver at the combine. Can you say NUMBERS REJECT? There is no such player that short and slow in the NFL today.

I know this is round seven, but the pick is a bad one.

did you miss the bit about how he was injured per TMC and it probably effected his workout?

Antonio was a numbers reject how that work out coach?

I will hang up and listen.........

wait now, in one thread you say measurables don't mean **** and production matters, now his slow combine time (where he ran with a broken hand which had a negative effect on his start) makes him a numbers reject? at least keep your arguing points consistent. Do numbers matter or does tape?

**** your logic, coach will use whatever helps him better in any argument and ignore facts and tape (wich he apparently now reviews), even if they are child-proof explained to him

Pretty amazing we drafted this kid as a punt returner first and foremost, yet he caught 98 passes for 1,222 yards and 6 touchdowns last season on 132 total targets.

According to Steelers Depot, only five other players had more receptions than Ayers did last season in the FBS.

If he can make it as a returner, highly likely they'll find a role for him in the slot and in gadget plays a la Randle El. Which means the WR's past the top four (AB, Wheaton, Coates, DHB) should all buckle up their helmets if they want to grab a spot on the roster, cause this kid may just take it from them.

He was UHs best receiver, he would go deep or catch quick WR screen passes and was very good on 3rd down cutting across the middle If he was taller he would have gone a lot earlier

Thanks for the info Coolie. Regarding his height, I've seen Coach and others throw 5-9 around, but the Steelers have him listed at 5-11, 190, about the same size as Wheaton, a bit bigger than AB.

nfl.com overview

Ayers was an explosive, if undersized, running back from Texas when he arrived on the UH campus, but left after three years as one the best combination slot receiver/return specialists in the country. Getting the ball in his hands was important to Houston coaches, so he lined up as the primary kick returner as a true freshman, earning first-team All-AAC honors (37-1,021, one TD) while working his way into a starting spot the final three games of the year (11-130, one TD receiving). Ayers continued to return kicks in his sophomore year (34-592) but also started eight games as a receiver (33-335, two TD). With the exciting Greg Ward, Jr. operating as the team's quarterback (and leading rusher) in 2015, Ayers fed off that energy to earn first-team all-conference with 98 catches for 1,222 yards and six scores while going back to his roots as a running back at times (25-147, one TD rushing). He also moved from returning kickoffs to taking back punts, earning first team accolades there as well (28-290, one TD). In the Cougars' Peach Bowl win over Florida State, Ayers threw for a touchdown, too. That meant he had done just about everything he could as a collegiate offensive weapon, so he decided to head to the NFL instead of returning with Ward for another run in 2016

as a UH fan, I would have preferred he stayed one more year and it likely would have helped his draft ranking. I am hopeful he can show enough to earn the spot as primary punt returner and maybe even kick returner, and now and then some time at slot receiver.

watch the punt return against Florida State (3:10 mark) and tell me he looks like a 4:6 or 4:7 guy

Watched this last night. No way this guy is low 4.7 or high 4.6, at worst mid 4.5's

AB didnt wow anyone physically either. Look at this guys highlights. He torched people at UH. I'm sure he'll transition just fine. Another possession receiver for Ben to get the ball off quicker

Combine he measured 69 inches so he is 5-9. But the true question would be what's his head size?

How many pages left to tie dri's thread?
By the way Dri doesn't have anywhere near the hands Ayers has

Haven't seen this posted yet. Love this video from Steelers Depot of Ayers showing all his TD's from last year. A good snapshot of his speed and WR skills. Probably not a pure, straight-line speedster but shows plenty of running ability. I prefer this type of football player with great vision & moves to the track meet, straight-line guys. Having said that, on some of these plays Ayers simply flies right by defenders...

He's very talented - fast, good hands, sees the field well, etc.

I'd be shocked if he doesn't make the team.
