Steelers select CB Senquez Golson

Not overthrown. The receiver wasn't reaching for the ball...he had his arms cradled out ready for the ball to drop into his hands when Golson stole it.

Correct

Senquez Golson’s visit to Pittsburgh must have gone well.

With the 56th overall selection in the NFL Draft, the Steelers selected the former Pascagoula standout and Ole Miss All-American.

ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper couldn’t say enough about the Steelers’ pick.

“If you’re a Ravens fan you hate the pick and if you’re a Steelers fan you love it. That’s one of the best picks of the second round,” he said of Golson, who visited Pittsburgh and Baltimore, and worked out for Tampa Bay and Cleveland. “Golson is an interceptor supreme. Sixteen career picks — 16.”

Kiper went on to call the 5-foot-8, 176-pound Golson “pound for pound one of the best football players in this draft” with “wide receiver hands.”

Fellow ESPN analyst Todd McShay didn’t knock Golson for his size.

“For a smaller corner, he will support the run,” he said. “I think he’s tough, physical, aggressive. He’s everything you look for.

“You wish he was a little bit bigger and longer and all of those things, but he plays to his potential and his ability and he’s not afraid at all to mix it up.”

Funny, I remember that many people's reaction to us drafting Le'veon Bell was the same stupid crap: "would love him in round 3 but he was a reach in round 2." That kind of talk comes from folks who read 1,500 mock drafts and think they mean something - they don't.

I thought we reached in the 2nd round when we picked Le'Veon Bell and I was pretty wrong about that one. I thought running backs aren't worth that and didn't realize Bell could lose 10 lbs. and become a great 3-down player and threat in the pass game like he is.

I dismissed Golson's good film due to his size limitations. He's not just a small cornerback to me. He's REALLY small. When you start getting into under 5'-9" and under 30" arms, I philosophically think those are limitations in the NFL that even good natural football instincts and talent can't make up for. It limits his ceiling a lot in my opinion.

I hope I'm wrong. He's a good character kid. He'll work hard. And with the way our depth at cornerback looks, he's going to get lots of opportunities to play.

I would have picked P. J. Williams I think (pretty sure actually). He was the highest corner on my board. He is certainly much more of a boom/bust pick. His floor is low. His ceiling is high.

Because of that, I probably would plan on picking a more middle of the road slot CB later in this draft (maybe even round 3-4-5). But that's the way I draft. I believe in high ceiling players and then covering your *** a bit with more middle-of-the-road workers later in the draft to provide good work ethic examples to the talented guys.

The Steelers didn't do that. They fell in love with Golson, his work ethic and his character and good college film and they picked him very high in my opinion.

We'll see if it works out.

So where were Harrison and Parker drafted?

they weren't and they panned out..... Not many people I am sure thought they would at one time or another was more my point............

High praise from Rotoworld, especially that last sentence...

Senquez Golson - DB - Steelers
Steelers selected Ole Miss CB Senquez Golson with the No. 56 overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft.
Golson (5'9/176) made 33 starts for the Rebels, amassing six tackles for loss and 16(!)interceptions. By leading the nation with ten picks as a senior, Golson earned consensus first-team All-American accolades. Golson ran 4.46 at the Combine with a 33 1/2-inch vertical and 10-foot broad jump. Golson is small with short arms (29 3/4"), but a good enough tackler with enough quickness to become a playmaking slot corner. His shortcomings as a boundary corner were exposed in 2014, allowing five touchdown passes into his coverage. Still, Golson will immediately move ahead of Cortez Allen and William Gay as the Steelers' top corner.

If he busts at corner, at least he can catch.....maybe he could take Dri's spot in the slot on O?

I still worry this team is worried too much about "between-the-20's" football and not worried enough about red zone (both offensively and defensively).

Short corners are very restricted in red zone defense and teams will target him with tall WR's if given the chance.

they weren't and they panned out..... Not many people I am sure thought they would at one time or another was more my point............

So players with unusual physical skills that we did not waste a draft pick on turned out? So why waste a pick on an undersized DB without any unusual physical skills and a very limited role in the NFL?

He simply too small, great guy, awesome individual, but his numbers simply will not equate to the next level... They simply can't its physics... The nfl isn't going to let him use his hands to get up it a receivers business like you can in college before the ball is in the air... We used a second round pick to take a guy who can't cover our third round pick... Way to go Tombert!!! Great help for a horrible secondary.

Willie Williams and DeShea Townsend say hi.

I love the "Can't" and "Zero" chances this young man has. Got to love the the draft!!!

Carnell Lake on Golson

Coach Lake: We are pleased to be able to grab Senquez Golson in the second round from Mississippi. He is a ball-hawking type of corner. He has very good quickness, very good anticipation and awareness, and we are looking forward to having him in the building.

Are taller wide receivers going to be a concern?

He’s going to be challenged, there’s no question about that, just like they challenge all of our defensive backs. If you are 6-2 they are still going to throw at you or if you are 5-8 they are still going to throw at you. Senquez is going to have to come in and he’s going to have to prove that he can play in this league. We believe he can.

What do you like about him?

Talking to him when we had him in for a visit, Senquez is very intelligent, very football aware, very knowledgeable of the game. I was asking him questions about the defenses he played at Mississippi and some of the problems and issues that he had or situations that the defense had at Mississippi. I wouldn’t even finish the question and he was answering it. He’s very sharp. I really liked that about him. He won’t have a problem learning the system. He’s very aware. I could put him in multiple situations because of that. I think he will adapt very quickly to different schemes and positions that we may put him in. Whether it’s the nickel or playing corner outside.

You said leading up to the draft that some scouts and NFL coaches said that if he were taller that he would’ve been a first round pick. Would you have told that to him?

I probably would’ve. I think that’s true. If he had been two inches taller, we probably would not have gotten him. He probably would have gone high in the first round. He has unusual ball skills and unusual production, especially when it comes to interceptions. And if you look at the corners that have been selected before him, they can’t match his level of productivity in terms of interceptions, especially when you look at last year. If he were taller, people would have jumped on him right away.

How important was it to get a ball-hawk to create more turnover for the offense?

I think that if we start getting pressure on the quarterback in significant ways, the interceptions will come. And if a guy has hands like Senquez, and he can anticipate and get a jump on a quarterback, pressure and coverage go hand in hand. And with us yesterday in the first round getting a linebacker and now we got the ball-hawk corner, I think that it’s going to work out pretty well.

When you say ball hawk, does that translate automatically from college to the pro game?

No, not at all. You guys know that as well as I do. He is going to have to come into the league and prove it. There is a lot of great talent around in the league and there is talent in our division and they are going to match him up on just about everybody that we play. Whether it is Cincinnati, with Green, or if we go to Baltimore and the number one pick that the Baltimore Ravens took yesterday at 6-2 and runs a 4.2, all of our defensive backs and secondary are going to be challenged by that. It never ends. The competition is really severe and stiff in the NFL and he will have to come in and adjust very quickly.

What goes into a corner’s skill set:

It’s like speed. It’s part of you. You can work on it, but it’s more than that at this level. You have to want to tackle. If there’s a way to measure someone’s heart, that’s the way you measure it. How eager are they going to be to take on the run game as a corner? We play a lot of teams that have big backs that are really fast, that are angry and mean when they run. You have to get up there. You have to be willing to be aggressive and make your play. How you make your tackle or when you make your tackle, all that matters. The more aggressive corner you have that will be willing to make those tackles not only against the run but also in the open field. A lot of situations, a corner has to be agile enough to make a tackle in the open field, which is very difficult. At this level, these guys are expected to do that.

I can't wait until everyone is pumped when the Steelers draft a 5'10" cornerback this round.

so then who is he covering at the 1:45 mark?

He had almost as many int s last year as our whole team got in 16 games.

there are active and used CBs in this league who are 5'8 or smaller...I know from a game I watched last year Minnesota has fielded one for a while now... several safeties also fit that size IIRC.

Size makes things easier, but we have seen huge fast wrs shut down by guys 5'9 or smaller with superb positioning and huge CBs toasted by quick small wrs too... if this guy's leaping and quick twitch ability are as good as they say he will be fine

We've had our share of "tall" 5'10 CBs with no ball skills...frankly, I'm relieved we went for a ball hawk in our zone coverage..

Undersized cornerback who's extremely feisty and competitive. Unanimous first-team All-American and first-team All-SEC selection. Tied school record for interceptions with 10. Great twitch, outstanding breaks on balls thrown his way. Loose hips, good eye discipline, doesn't get fooled. Outstanding against the run. Played mostly in zone.

Look, I know that I blasted the pick, but I like him, just not in rd 2. Shamarko is super short and so is Golson. I don't want the secondary to get abused by taller wr's and TE;s.

Those who don't like the pick will all say in unison he a great, awesome guy... But a second round pick for a secondary in shambles? Great over the slot ya where was he against welker but just seems, like Coates in the 3rd and archer last year... At 5-9 176 hes a "Luxury" pick

I think I may have jumped the gun in deriding this guy over his size. He can catch. When was the last time we had a corner with hands? Probably Woodson.

Moving towards liking the pick.
