Steelers rookie camp notes

Personally I want to see Jarvis succeed. Of course I'd like to see all the Steelers picks succeed. But, I agree that this is the year he has to show almost a complete package. He's been around the defense long enough to know his assignments if he's studied the playbook. He's had enough on field experience that the speed of the game should no longer be a factor. It's just time.

What I like about this year over last year is that it appears that they have made contingency plans in the event he fails. Moats and Harrison were brought back. Lemon was brought in. Dupree and Chickillo were drafted. I think that if Jarvis has any sense at all he should be able to see that they are sending him a message. And Ford is right; the message is "**** or get off the pot."

The crazy scary part is JJ looks to be a bust so far. We will see I guess this year. Shazier was injured and is still a question mark. And Dupree is a guy a lot of scout said is just a workout warrior not a football player. What if the Steelers go LB three straight years and all three wash out? Who do we blame then lol

way too early for ifs

and Dupree was a solid run stuffer in college and dropped in coverage a decent amount of time...... I think those two areas you won't have to wait for production.

His pass rush might be a little on the raw side,

Shazier was a rookie and it isn't uncommon for a 2nd or 3rd year player to catch fire, especially if they were slowed by injury early.

I will worry about what ifs later as they develop.

Jones is the only one out of the three on the bubble. He will need a solid preseason.

That's two endorsements, one from Ike and one from Porter. Hopefully they are right.

I suspect jj might be facing a make or break year for him. The steelers drafted two linebackers this year and they did ok with the last time they did that. I am wondering how much upside they see with jones because so far he does not seem to be bringing much to the team. They maybe looking at some younger guys if jones fails and Harrison is here for short term insurance while guys are learning on the job.

I said it last season. JJ WAS flashing before he got hurt. But, I would like, and I suspect the Steelers will need, to see more than just flashes this year. Again, personally I hope JJ makes it. He seems like a nice guy; no trouble, no scandals, but he's going to have to channel some of that meanness Porter was trying to bring out during last year's training camp in order to succeed. Consistency and aggression, I think those are the keys for JJ this year.
