Steelers President Art Rooney SNR interview

They usually don't wait long to address the things that ARII talks about in his season-ending interview. This actually may be the year they take a DB in the first round.

or pick up a solid UFA

or hell both

I hope they don't pick one though just for the sake of it. If at 25 a DL or OG or a TE is ranked clearly higher that they pick that guy and not reach.

I really doubt it, even when they screw up is rarely because reaching, more that they fall in love for the wrong guy

Very good listen. Little "owner speak" but very informative. I'm on the boat of NOT drafting just to draft a DB. Value to coinside with who is there. I'm sure the STEELERS organization knows way more about that than I do. Good luck not just on the draft, but also in the endeavers of the team.

Salute the nation

Big Snack ver 2.0 would be alright too. Keep all those 1st round LB free to make plays and it will improve the run D and pass rush making the CBs look better as well.

I took it as they will simply look to improve, if that means in free agency sobeit. I think they could trade up or down somewhere within the draft for a corner as well. But no not reach on one. As one poster mentioned they usually don't take that route.

"Big Snack 2.0" will be on the field at most 15 snaps a game. Would be silly to waste a 1st on one.

You gotta have stud pass rushers to beat Tom Brady.

not if they play a nickel/dime with three front men and three LBs

The problem is that true Nose Tackle position is becoming outdated because nowadays the defense will spend most of its time in sub packages, and the true NT position becomes obsolete. These days you are looking for a hybrid guy who can be on the field regardless of formation (Ngata, Shelton, Lotulelei, etc.) and those types are just not easy to find. The days of having a 340-350lb NT in the middle are passing by because.... teams are passing far more and working in more passing formations.

Eric Weddle, please.

And, a FA cornerback (doesn't even have to be a top flight CB, but a good one or potentially good one), then go into the draft without having to feel like you have to address any specific area of the team and pick the BPA.

Papillon

Also we have Golson this season, like having an extra 2nd round pick that we already used on a CB. We need depth on the Dline, Tuitt and Heyward need a solid guy that can give them a rest, and unfortunately we still need an OLB on the right side too.

Eric Weddle, please.

We are two front like players away from having a decent secondary IF Gay is resigned. If Gay walks, the 30th ranked pass defense is in big trouble...hoping for Grant or Golson be the answer.

CB Gay
CB #1 pick or Cockrell
S Weddle
S Mitchell

Not a bad group at all. Plenty of ball skills here. Speed, not so much, however we have a few slot guys and dime defenders who can help if correclty deployed.

I think Gay is 31 or will be 31? I don't think he's going to be high demand in Free Agency. We do lack speed, but Golson ran a 4.4 I think, but I think maybe more than speed, we need our Secondary to tackle alot better than this past season.

I don't think the secondary is AS BAD as we thought, cornerback-wise anyway. As long as we bring back Gay, our corners are solid provided Blake doesn't play. Cockrell is very young and could/should take another step forward next season with a lot of PT this past season. I think they can be a solid 1/2. Boykin will be a nice addition to the slot with regular PT provided he returns. It seems like he "got it" towards the end of the season and the coaches rewarded him with more playing time. Plus you have Golson like was mentioned to battle for the nickle/dime role with Boykin.

The weakest spot is the giant void still left by Troy at SS. Shamarko was not and is not the answer so that ship has sailed. Allen is clearly a stop gap and is entering his mid 30s so we definitely need an upgrade there. As long as the Steelers can get one of Jeremy Cash, Vonn Bell, or Jayron Kearse, that could go a long way in upgrading the secondary. And the good part is most likely one of them falls to 2.25 which leaves our 1st open to take BPA or ideally trade down and pick up extra picks since the value seems to be rounds 2-3 in this draft. Cash (6'2") and Kearse (6'5") could also add some much needed height to our midget secondary.

I agree with Coryea, OLB and DE are also big needs. DE mainly for depth so not as big of a need but Jarvis turning into a potential (hah) bust does not help the OLB situation especially if Deebo retires. I have faith in Dupree/Timmons/Shazier.

1st round BPA - ideally a stud CB, OLB or Dline player falls to 25 OR trade back to pick up an extra 2nd or 3rd.

2nd round - best SS available

3rd round - BPA between whichever 2 positions weren't taken in the 1st

Also keep in mind that now the 1st round is the only round on day 1, a lot of teams in the high end of the 2nd round like to jump into the end of the 1st to grab someone who has fallen so there should be some trade opportunities to get some extra picks if the player or players we like at 1.25 are gone.

Nits, I think the probability of Boykin returning is very low. The Steelers view him as a slot CB, even though he may have been the best CB on our squad. We drafted Golson in the 2nd last year for that role but made a move for Boykin as a stop gap due to Golson hitting the IR. Boykin will get payed better elsewhere where he will be utilized more. It's a shame we don't seem to respect his ball skills and coverage ability, he could also be an answer in the return game. I would love to see him back but think that ship sailed when we underutilized him this year after trading for him. I hope Golson is the answer.

Can get a ss in rd 3. If we get Weddle, may not even draft one.

And bring back Keisel too as we are now in the pine for great beards era

I think Weddle will want too much for his age. All I can see is Ike Taylor. He was very good in his prime and very underappreciated. But, his play dropped off seriously his last 2 years. I don't recall his age when he retired but I don't think it was much past 34 or 35. That puts his decline in his early 30's.
