Virginia Commonwealth basketball star Mo Alie-Cox held a workout Tuesday at Sports Reality Performance in Richmond, Virginia and the Pittsburgh Steelers were reportedly one of many NFL teams who had someone on hand to observe it.

Alie-Cox, who is currency considered a free agent being as he wasn’t drafted last year, is a former 6-foot-6 basketball forward who is hoping to show teams he can play tight end in the NFL. It was originally thought that he might be eligible for this year’s draft but that ultimately wasn’t the case.

Alie-Cox, a three-time all-defensive pick in the Atlantic 10, ranked second in career blocked shots at VCU (255) ahead of this year’s NCAA tournament. He had also scored 1,090 points and ranked second in career field goal percentage (.576) during his career at VCU.

According to Lane Casadonte, the Sports Director for WTVR and WDCW, Alie-Cox ran the 40-yard-dash in 4.75 seconds on Tuesday and weighed in at 262-pounds.

Alie-Cox, is hoping to follow in the footsteps of current NFL tight ends, Antonio Gates, Julius Thomas and Jimmy Graham, all of whom had basketball backgrounds prior to each being drafted.

At this point, Alie-Cox will hope that one of the teams that observed his make-shift pro day will sign him to a contract that will allow him to participate in a training camp.

So which one of yinz would be interested in bringing Mo Coxs in...

some workout numbers

Saw a story about him during the NCAA tourney. Crazy good work ethic. I think he was 300+lbs in high school and his coach adopted him and turned him into a fitness freak and got a D1 Bball scholarship out of it. If anyone can make the switch, it seems like he has the drive to be able to.

Why not sign him, could be the next Gates or not, you don't have much to lose here either way

I agree with this. If he is an unknown commodity as a FA, offer vet min and let him battle it out in camp. Safe bet at this point with Green being such a question mark.

Why not sign him? He probably would play more than Green!!

well after-all they are saying Big Ben wants a TE

he's got dreads. which means he had corn rows at one point.
i'm sure that just pissed off some idiots on this board.

Chiefs signed a guy named Ross Travis who played basketball at Penn State. He never played football. He was a great athlete so he trained, went to workouts and the Chiefs signed him. He was on the active roster last year.

If you have a spot for a receiving TE and don't count on him to block then these basketball players are real options. There are tons of guys playing college basketball who are 6'6 power forwards and they are not big enough for the NBA to play forward and not quick enough to play guard, but they are still great athletes. Fast enough to beat LBs and too big to be covered by DBs.

It seems the real test is toughness. Most of them don't work out because they are scared of being hit. It's worth the shot though because they cost nothing.

Training camp with mo-cox in the seam leaving gay/burns behind

I'm OK with a football guy who has played basketball. The feet required in basketball really transfer. But I think you had to have played some football in my opinion.

He played in the 9th grade not sure if before that point.

But a small body of work is better than nothing.

I think some coaches like a player they can mold.

But I guess they have to feel they can be molded.

So we'll see.........

Great! He should be ready to go in a few years just in time for Ben's retirement party! Draft a ******* TE that's actually played in college and move on from the Green experiment. The only Green the Steelers will see is the green they're paying him to sit on his ***.

let him in....we need all the TE prospects we can get

Is 4.75 slow for a receiving TE? Does anyone know Gates or Gronk's numbers?

I think Gronk was recovering from back surgery during his pro day and combine. If memory serves me correct.

I think 4.75 is average. I think a ideal would be somewhere within the 4.6 range. But that is all but one measurement...
