Steelers Negotiating with Bell; Personal Reasons Caused Late Arrival

He told reporters that the Steelers coaching staff was aware that he would be late to practice on Jan 13. He had personal issues that caused him to miss most of the walk-through. That should ease some of the tension between he and the fan base.

Was that 'personal issue' that he was up late tweeting the night before?

I love to watch Bell play, but the cost of keeping him here is just too high. We need to move on from him.

You better come to grips with it Bell isn't going anywhere.

Sure you can shoot for the stars, but to have a serviceable defense that can stop the run & get off the field on 3rd downs (and win playoff games) it's more like:

1 new ILB to pair with Williams
1 new NT
1 new safety to pair with Davis

And some added depth at all positions.

That's something that can realistically get done this off-season.

I'm presuming our corners hold up (we have decent depth), that Davis & Dupree take significant strides (and Bud learns to keep his damn trap shut) and Watt continues to improve in his 2nd season. I doubt we could do better than Tuitt & Cam at DE, they just had a weak showing vs. Jags for whatever reason.

And for the love of God, figure out the defensive schemes and coaching hierarchy. Whatever Tomlin and Butler have been experimenting with, pinpoint what works best and roll with it. I'd love to see a new linebacker coach to replace Porter/Olslavksy and a new DB coach instead of Lake, but those moves don't seem likely.

Outside of that, the only other big hole I see is in the return game. Bryant looked pretty sweet running back kicks but they yanked him soon thereafter. Would be nice to have PR/KR who's a legitimate threat, who can be sprinkled on O from time to time.

Anyway, I don't think we're that far off on D. Nor do I think rebuilding this defense is that huge of a challenge this off-season. I wish Colbert the best.

It could get done in the offseason, but everyone knows it won't. We are STRAPPED for cash....AGAIN. Sure, we can restructure guys. But that will just get us even.
I don't even want to fill a bunch of holes. We need a starting FS and a backup ILB. I would love to actually go all-in this year and find a way to pay Lamarcus Joyner to come in at FS. I would even take Vaccaro/Reid/Boston. Grab a vet to challenge Matakevich to start while our rookie 1st round ILB (Smith, Edmunds or Evans) learns. Grab another OLB and WR in rd 2/3. BPA the rest of the way.

We all know the money can be found. I just wish we would do it.

He's not the #1 back in the league though. You HAVE to get that out of your head. He just runs more often than any other back in the league.

Given his skill set as a reciever, he's close enough in my book.

Holy flying **** you biotches that can't see he is the #1 RB in the league I have no respect left

I am concerned that Bell has the definite potential to be the guy that after getting his big payday...who doesn't give a **** any more. Some guys don't worry me at all in that regard. He does.

Spike, his YPC average wasn't even in the top 7 this year. He makes catches out of the backfield, true but that waters down his effectiveness as a back as he spends so much time in wr sets.
Ya, he's great. Do you want to tie up 40 million dollars in cap money and see him get creamed in week 2? Is he THAT great?
He's not a better runner than Elliot, or Gurley. They sure as **** ain't getting 14 or 15 million a year...
He can catch out of the backfield and he does a good job, even a great job picking up blitzes.

Is it a 14 or 15 million dollar job?

Oh fer fucksakes....you pay the man he will produce

What the **** is wrong with U hicks?

pay him, release Mitchell the biggest weakness, ask Ben and |Heyward to take paycuts, replace Mitchell with Vaccaro, and put him at FS and Davis to SS, sign Justin Ellis the guy who should of been drafted instead of Archer a massive better version of Mcullers more agile in better conditioning shape and will command a double similar to a type that big Casey used to. Draft top target ILB.

Boom. Mike drop. Walk off.

Except that Tombert has shown an amazing failure to draft and/or develop good defensive talent.

That's a little worry of mine also but he has hit on a few also. We NEED a starter to replace Mitchell and a starter at ILB so either can be a free agent brought in or a high draft pick BUT both need to happen this off season. Do NOT take a QB, Jones may suck but I think his capacity is good enough for this coming year to not have to spend on a future QB.

Count me as torn too.

I concede Bell's receiving skills are 2nd to none, he keeps Ben healthy by giving him dump offs instead of holding the ball, and replacing him in the short term would be very tough-and Ben and the window are short term.

But Bell is an immature selfish turd. He motivated the Jags, tweeted about his money 3 days before a playoff game, and is one puff away from a year suspension. Does setting Bell up for life with a big contract make this crap go away or make it worse....

Wait... You want BEN to take a pay cut?

You're ******* kidding, right?

LOL yeah really, Ben is the 9th highest paid QB, behind guys like Stafford, Carr, Flacco, Luck and we want to take money from him so Bell can be the highest paid RB. Haha

I love Bell, but I don't want to keep him to the detriment of the rest of the team. How great is Bell gonna be when you can't afford a line to block for him? Giving him $17 million per is a huge risk to begin with, even when you discount his lack of maturity. He is an awesome talent, but #1 RB in the league? Nah. Top 5 for sure. As said above, Elliot and Gurley are better runners, and I am not sure blitz pickup is worth the difference. Either way, not my decision. Guess we'll see if he and the Steelers can reach a deal. I have my doubts about that. I mean, I know they are negotiating, but they were negotiating last year too. I still think he ends up tagged.

not really a few cuts and we are even, a few restructures and we are ahead with breathing room.

Shazier -prayers are with him
GAy
Wilcox
Mitchell

woud free up a decent amount

then restructure a few

every got damn year Steelers are close then make it happen

no reason this offseason should be any different

AND tagged would be the way to go. There are just to many questions for the risk and amount. If he was coming to the table with out the piss problem or the two previous injuries or the attitude then a BIG contract would be in order but being one piss test away from a SUSPENTION, previously injured adding to the overuse wear and tear, and an attitude that said if you don't pay me I sit out or retire.....................HARD to tie up entire team future .......(Joseph Unibrow)......... In that much cap space handicap. IT wasn't that long ago we were in cap hell and it sucked big time...I just hope our front office don't lead us back to there. If the right contract for team and player can be worked out then he'll yes but also notice TEAM first.

Bell's $12.1 million franchise tag figure isn't just the largest cap hit for any running back in football; it's 36.6 percent more than the second-largest cap hit for a back (McCoy at $8.875 million) and 74.4 percent more than the third-largest figure (DeMarco Murray at $6.95 million). If the Steelers franchise Bell again in 2018, he'll make $14.5 million, which would be way ahead of McCoy and more than double the third-largest cap hit of Ezekiel Elliott. (Devonta Freeman likely will jump into this top three.) At some point, as good as Bell is, even a healthy Bell isn't worth twice as much as virtually every other back in football. Throw in the availability issues and it's hard to buy Bell is worth what would amount to a reset of the running back market.

What's wrong with us Spike is that we are smart enough to not want to overpay for a possible inconstant product, possibly at the peak of productivity and jus maybe a step away from a possible disaster. possibly that is, ya know ?

Pay the man what ? How much of the team has to go away to make Spike and Toke happy ?

Shazier has a fully guaranteed option that was picked up. You save nothing by releasing him.

Serious question here, since I don't know the answer. If Shazier cannot come back and were to retire, would we get that cap space back?

Not to my understanding. It's fully guaranteed. Just like in baseball.

I believe you are correct. And, that is what makes signing Bell, as much as many want to, that much more of a bad business decision. We will have to rely on the draft to pick up a starting ILB, a starting FS to replace Mitchell (who must be cut to make room for Bell) and a 2nd ILB for some depth. Then we have to hope everyone else on the D improves from this year and no one gets hurt.

Sounds like a game plan.

As much as I would like to get the 2-1st rounders out of Bell, I would entertain ANY offer he can arrange from another team. You do NOT try to build a team around a RB, they are short lived, you build around a QB. We are going to have to replace Ben soon, you can not afford to hamstring your cap for a RB,.

If they sign Bell long-term his cap hit in 2018 will be much lower. Say he signs a 5 year contract with a 20 million signing bonus.
The bonus hits 4 mil per year. His salary in 2018 might be 4 mil, so 4+ 4 = 8 mil cap hit in 2018.
