Steelers interested in CBs Marcus Cooper & Brandon Flowers

They need to build to win now, because when Ben is done, we'll be crap for a couple seasons any ways
maybe, maybe not
we could just as easily snag a QB and not miss a beat.

That is what we do at this time of the year. . ...sit on our hands and sign our own guys back....while the Pats keep on improving.

The Pats are trading one under performing TE for another under performing TE (Bennet is actually better than Allen), that deal is a wash. It's not the TE that NE puts out there, it's the way in which they use them. They also lost one of their best CB's and signed one from a division rival that I honestly don't think is as good as everyone was clamouring on about. This years FA class is not strong at all, so average players are made to look like all pro's by the media, and thus get over paid.

You make AB play out his final year, franchise bell, sign a top notch cb

This is a joke right? Oh wait, I forgot your weird obsession for AB (notice I didn't say hate, I know you love to say you don't). First, Browns cap hit didn't jump one cent this year, his extension kept his cap hit EXACTLY the same as it would have been had we not signed him to the extension and let him play out his deal, which would have almost guaranteed that he would not have been a Steeler in 2018. Sorry to burst your bubble, but your scenario doesn't create anymore cap space than we already had. And where is this top notch CB in this years FA class? Bouye? who the Texans let go? Gilmore, who the Bills let sign with a division rival? There are no top notch CB's on the FA market this year, there's a bunch of average and below average players being paid like pro bowl players.

What in the world does Tomlin not get. Every team looks for fresh meat that wants to play we sign same old meat that sit around and collect a pay check. Does any of this make sense, we make it to the AFC championship game and see our weakness and we sign the same players back. No wonder the Pats beat our ***.

I'm confused, when did Tomlin get promoted to GM? oh wait, that's still Kevin Colbert, and he's doing the SMART THING by not overpaying for average players. They will find their FA signings in the coming weeks and focus on the draft. There are no players on the market right now that were going to "put us over the top" by signing.

Marcus Cooper

Steelers, Jets interested

The 27-year-old was exposed playing opposite Patrick Peterson last season, earning PFF's No. 107 cornerback grade out of 120 qualifiers

Chargers add Brandon Flowers to the discard pile

Flowers spent the last three seasons with the Chargers and missed the last six games of last season with a concussion. He missed time earlier in the year with another concussion and saw action in just six games altogether in the team’s final year in San Diego.

If they can be gotten cheap enough, the Steelers have a chance.

The thing is the Steelers will extend Tuitt and Villanueva (probably Bell) and not really lose anyone besides Timmons. If you look at some of these other contenders yeah, they might sign a guy but they also lose a guy or two. We are keeping our own and I prefer that. I am fine waiting out the first week of this crazy free agency and bringing in a guy for a better price. Look at it this way would you prefer Flowers or Gay? Or Marcus Cooper or Ross Cockrell? They are looking to improve the team but not by overspending. If winning free agency won super bowls the Redskins and Raiders would have won 20 a piece by now.

DB/CB is NOT the glaring problem. We said it for years...

If you give ANY QB time to throw - most DB's/CB's get shredded.

We need pressure on QB's. We need an OLB/DE that can produce 12-20 in a season and we need an ILB (if Timmons leaves) as well.

My suggestion has been Tim Williams (for more than 2 years) - I could care less about the collegiate problems - I WANT A PASS RUSHING DEMON. He is that.

well actually I think both need to be solid ...yes you can get away with crap at DB with a great pass rush...you can get away with great DB's and an average pass rush...but to be a top notch D you need both...Our DB's have been average to below average for years...Hopefully the corner has been turned with Burns/Davis ..but we need more..Pass Rush aint beating the Pats if you have DB's that can't cover for .5 seconds

Haha you say there are no top notch corners, yet teams are paying them like that. So Buffalo, let Gilmore go so he's no good, yeah because Buffalo's front office is who I trust, wait don't we have a starting CB that Buffalo didn't want?

You let AB play out his final season because you can. I've said numerous times we are better with AB, but that doesn't mean he gets to do what he wants and act like a 16 year old girl.

Colts released CB Patrick Robinson.

One of ex-GM Ryan Grigson's many free-agent flops, Robinson was unable to stay on the field last season due to groin, knee, and concussion issues.

He started just six games. Robinson turns 30 this year, but he had a really good 2015 with the Chargers and can still help a team.

A cripple for cheap?

Get out the band-aid box. Hell ya, we'll take him!

Williams is a beast but collegiate problems and drugs is something we have seen hurt us too often recently. I just can't see the Steelers taking him. Then again, they have been working out the woman beater RB from Oklahoma.

I don't know. Maybe do as Coryea says....but if we would me the Pats in the playoffs again do you see the end results changing with what we have done?

I'll explain you why Coryea is wrong:
AB's new contract didn't increase his 2017's cap hit(surprise!), so from then on his Free Agency plan is completely flawed. Oh and they did franchise bell

Now I'll tell you what I'd do to have a bit more cap room:
1. Dump Green, 3,8M in savings, you get a rookie pospect in the first three rounds to fight for snaps with Jesse James

2. Dump Moats, 2.2M in cap savings. Chickillo already can do what Moats does and for a lot less money, also this is another priority in the draft

3. with those extra 6M couple it with a few more go for a starting CB that isn't asking for 10M with delusions that they are the young Revis island remake like Logan Ryan or Princejury-ridden Amukamara who never plays 16 games.

Well Litos the original poster ask the question if the AB and Bell signings were nothing.... well then all we really did was sign (franchise) Bell with all our cap space then I say no....it hasn't been enough.

You think just because Buffalo let him go, they're retarded and don't know talent. And you're basing this off of a fourth round pick that we picked up, but Buffalo was trying to sneak on the practice squad. Plus I'm pretty sure I've read more on this board about how Ross shouldn't be a starting CB for us and that he needs to be upgraded.

So yeah, I'll stick to saying there are no top notch corners. Plenty of players get big paydays and then don't produce at all. I never even heard Gilmore's name and top notch corner together until free agency, and they didn't just let him go, they let him go to NE, a DIVISONAL RIVAL! It reminds me a lot of 2004, Antoine Winfield was being touted as the best CB in FA, and a "top notch" corner, he went from buffalo to minnesota, and while he didn't play poorly, he surely wasn't one of the games top corners, but he sure as hell got paid like one, because it was a weak class of FA's.

"Gilmore has been inconsistent as a pro, flashing weeks of brilliance along with games in which he is taken to school by opposing No. 1 wideouts." just one little tidbit about Gilmore, pretty sure we have that kind of play already on our roster with Burns and Crockell

I'm not even going to address the AB thing, you're simply wrong, already proved that.

Yes Cockrell does need upgraded, which is why I'm bitching about not going after a qb, I don't care if we end up in cap hell in 3-5 years, Ben will be gone sometime in there and we'll be **** anyways, have to go for broke to win now. Gilmore, Bouye, Butler are all way better than Cockrell

we prefer to remain competitive and not go for broke every time.
yes, Ben's window is closing.

say we do bring in Bouye. He'll be the highest paid - or close to it - on defense. how's that going to work out when Shazier's contract is up? Or Tuitt? or DuPree? Who's to say that when Ben hangs it up we don't have a QB on roster or draft his replacement immediately and not miss much of a beat?

those teams who usually go "all-in" fail and fail miserably.

this just in Steelers sign.....

absolutely nobody

The end goal is to win the damn super bowl. All this saving cap space and watching as our team does the same crap every year gets old. They are wasting away Bens final years so the cheapo Rooneys can save a few dollars.

Guess it doesn't matter as long as Rooneys get their 1 playoff game a year and then get smoked before the super bowl

Wexell is saying the team has $8M slotted for a UFA CB. So far they haven't been able to get any takers at that price

Is there anyone left even worth 8 mill now?

The Rooney's aren't cheap. That's a lot of ****.

Now, if you want to argue how they spend their money, OK. But they do spend it and to say they don't is ridiculous.

nope

Patriots go big for CB Stephon Gilmore

Per a source with knowledge of the deal, the Gilmore contract with the Patriots is worth $65 million over five years, an average of $13 million annually.

He receives a $18 million signing bonus, a fully-guaranteed 2017 base salary of $4.5 million, and a fully guaranteed 2018 base salary of $8.5 million. As a practical matter, it’s a two-year, $32 million deal with a team option for each year thereafter.
