Hi all,
I am a college football fan who follows the NFL more for just the enjoyment of the sport, I live in Eugene, Oregon and am a huge Duck fan. My 15 year old son when he was 3 became a Steelers fan because, I'm still not sure why, and I know have 3 sons that are Steeler faithful. For Christmas this year I am going to surprise them with a trip to Pittsburgh and go to the Steelers/Patriots game.

We have never been to Pittsburgh, we are season ticket holders to the Ducks and have been to a few NFL stadiums for conf championship/bowls/College Football Playoff games but never an NFL game before. I'm really excited for this surprise and have almost blown it a couple of times talking about it with them, last weekend when I said I really hoped both the Steelers and Patriots kept winning was one.

Anyway, I'm hoping that you can give me some advice on where to stay in town, places to eat in Pittsburgh, any must see places in the city, and info about seating in the arena. Is there a club section or anything like that? Is paying a premium for club access worth it? etc.

Any info will be greatly appreciated and help make this a trip to remember for my boys.

Thanks!

Hey man, welcome

Im gonna move this over to the football side so that more people see it.

Secondly the only good thing about the club is you can hang out inside. I would buy seats away from the club. I think you get a better experience with the "real" fans.

There are a ton of hotels right down by PNC and Heinz Field. Hyatt is a good one. I think there is a Residence Inn, and Holiday Inn. If you're there you won't have to worry about game day parking. $40+. Plus you can walk over to my tailgate party.

You def need to check out station square, and Primanti's which is a Pittsburgh based restaurant.

Welcome Husky!

I also recommend getting a Roethlisberger at Peppi's and trying some local pierogies.

Agree with this 100%. Hyatt is a very nice stay, and walking distance from Heinz and PNC. Make sure to get out early, and stop by the numerous restaurants, shops, etc. surrounding Heinz. Nice options right around the stadium. Not a whole lot else around the stadiums, unless you are into gambling, as there is a place called Rivers Casino which is maybe a 10-minute walk away. Indian casino, I think.

What I liked about the shops and stores at Heinz and PNC is the abundance of jerseys, socks, Terrible Towels, flags, and on and on. Don't have those in my 'hood.

From a dad who has taken family once and son a second time it is a great place. Felt very safe down town. Lots to do and see. Many food choices. Id also recommend staying downtown although last time we didnt and found cabs were very reasonable. I would say the flee market on gameday in the strip district is a must. Peppis is there. Tons of Steelers merch. The Heinz history museum was really good. If your kids are young the Carnegie Science Centre was good too. Jerome Bettis Grill near the stadium is great for any Steelers fan. Take the Stadium tour for sure if you are there day after game. You go right into the locker room. Good luck. I know you will enjoy. Hope they get you a win.

If you can spend a few hours in the Strip District on Saturday, you can accomplish many things: more Steeler gear than you could imagine, the original Primantis (sit at the "bar" with your kids for full effect), and you can get that Roethliesberger at Peppis.
The South Side has some great restaurants, and more for older "kids", while the Science Center and the Heinz History centre in the Strip District are also interesting.
You will have a great time.
Stop by SF81's tailgate; he can probably advise you well on tickets too.

Steeler fans just are. It was great your boy understood thiz at age 3!

That's great HuskyFree...I hope you and your boys have a great time which hopefully includes a Steelers win over the Pats. Sorry not much advice to give since I moved away from SW PA nearly 30 years ago, but I really do hope you have a great time and maybe we can add you too as a member of Steeler Nation!

Be sure and take them on the INCLINEs that's a PITTSBURGH must. One is located at Station Squarte and if you do it Saturday night, when you get to the top walk uphill and you are afforded a Spectacular view of the city at night PLUS Heinz & PNC are lit up which makes for great photo Oppps. GREAT trip and an experience for a life time.

Salute the nation

For as many times as I have seen this same scenario play out on this site, it's strange that some industrious yinzer hasn't come up with a " Steeler fan visitors guide to Pittsburgh". It wouldn't take but an app or pocket size little book with maps and directions to must see attractions along with spaces to make notes.

Surely there is an enterprising sole lurking about the North Side somewhere with the knowledge and ability to pull it off.

Something like this only with Steeler fans in mind.

Shop isn't open all the time(not on the weekends) and isn't slammed up against the other strip Steelers shops (a few blocks away) But I always like going there.

And if you lived here, and like seafood a lot of good selections in this market, but what they also have is some damn good fish sandwiches if you are a seafood lover.

Also when you are in market square

you have PPG wintergarden with Ice skating ring, huge Xmas tree, and inside is the Santa Claus' different countries versions.............

Will be a must see area for you and the kids around Xmas which is when the Steelers play the cheats.

Welcome man, I'm out of Montana and enjoyed my first trip a few years ago. Amazing time! Tailgated with Uge and some of the others. Wonderful fun!

For food, as mentioned:
- Go to Primanti Bros and "put an egg on it". Just to say you did.
- The "Roethlisburger" was amazing. I loved it. If you dig grease and hate your arteries. You'll be in heaven.

Tailgating:

So many options. Check with the guys on the board, they'll take good care of you. Bring some food to throw on the bar-b-que, Y.O.B. and a couple bucks to chip in for the shotski!

The Museum is nearby and there is a GREAT sports section there. (at least there was...) It's worth checking out.

First thing I do when I know I'm heading in for a game is book a hotel room. The hotels sell out very fast and they jack room prices up for games as well. Once that is done everything that was noted above is ideal. Pick and choose what you want to do and enjoy. The T is great for getting around. Point State Park is nice to walk through. If the Pens are playing while you are in town that could be a good experience as well.

If you like beer, Penn Brewery is a great place for German food and German style brews

My favorite brewery to go to is the Church Brew Works, just past the strip. Excellent food there and it being a converted church, provides the best atmosphere for Sunday 'Mass'.
