Steelers hiring McCarthy

I just hope we don't bring back Rodgers. See what we have with Howard. Maybe Rudy starts the season. Trade or cut some veterans depending on the new direction we go on the offensive and defensive side of the ball.

If we do move on from Rodgers ....that will mean we will have a different starter to open the season for the 6th year in a row. Sounds like the Browns. 😆

If you think each of those names is better than McCarthy, that's fine, but I feel you're proving my point. There's no awesome home run hire sitting out there this year.

When the Steelers hired Tomlin, they could afford to roll the dice on an unknown. They had a Super Bowl winning roster plus a great coaching staff with Lebeau and Arians and others to act as training wheels. Now they need a whole new staff while the roster is being rebuilt.

I like the McCarthy hire the more I think about it.

If they use the middle of the field on offense and defense, then it will be a massive improvement. Kill that 2 DL crap too.

Remove the players half assing it and guys who led the league in missed tackles(Queen). Don't go buying up every has been this offseason.

Bring in smart football players. Those combine stats don't mean **** if the guy is dumber than a box of rocks and you have to run tic,tac toe schemes.

Chess not checkers.

They need to hit well in the draft and we definitely need an upgrade at wr and an OC that can help scheme them open.

There is nothing new under the sun in the NFL. It's all been done. Some of it just hasn't been done in awhile or has a new name.

It's not rocket science.Block, tackle, pass, catch, run and kick. If you perform the fundamentals exceptionally well, you'll go father than those who don't.

Here is a tidbit I dug up and it is even worse than I expected.

“offensive coordinator for New Orleans and San Francisco. Steelers general manager Omar Khan and assistant GM Andy Weidl worked in the Saints front office when McCarthy was there”

So they subscribe to the buddy buddy rule of hiring over what is best for the team. Wonderful.

Doesn't surprise me one bit. I literally went from Euphoria the day Tomlin stepped down, right back to "Whatever mode" when Rooney spoke at the press conference.

I guess taking a chance with McCarthy is better than another year of Tomlin internship.

Lets go.....

Trade Watt, Cut Queen. Bring in the Rams SS let our injured SS go. Bring in the Chiefs FS. Bring in a WR (Colts) and a G.

Good place to start..

I now count down the time until he steps down he has held us back with his mediocre approach .

Well, hopefully he hires a great staff. It will be interesting to see who the DC&OC will be. The position coaches.
...and thats all we can now hope for. He hires good/great OC & DC also great assistant coaches. Its some really good OCs out there starting with Joe Brady. Hope we want to pay them...SMH...the thought of all the problems away from the field is terrible.

I want something that brings spark and excitement. The old boys network doesn't do it.
Deuce doesn't want spark and excitement, he wants 9 wins.

Judging from the apocalyptic reactions to the McCarthy hiring my first thought is, no wonder the Steelers have always hired relative unknowns to be their next head coach. Yeesh. Only so much people can freak out about a guy have barely heard of and they don't know much about I guess.

The only way to do that is hook your balls up to an alternator while watching the game.
Meh, that only works for about a half hour then your balls become numb to the electric shocks....
.....or so I've heard.

Maybe if they actually had a thoughtful process and were able to make a good hire the response would be better.

AR2 and Omar Khan are the short bus version of Dan Snyder and Vinnie Cerrato.

No, it wasn't a great move. I would've 1000% went in a different direction. However, was it better than Weaver (their only other candidate to get a 2nd interview), Flores, Hafley, or Evero? Yes.

I still can't believe the Steelers only other candidate to get a 2nd interview was Weaver. Awful process.

I think it is due to art 2 being in over his head. A younger coach would have been more than he could handle, especially when you add in the change needed.

Salute the nation

Here’s my honest opinion on Mike McCarthy. He’s the bleached version of Mike Tomlin. We did not improve with this hire whatsoever. BUT there’s still hope depending on who he hires as offensive and defensive coordinators,

There's speculation on the Twitters that the Rams' assistants may have wanted a McVay type coaching staff, with separate run and pass game coordinators and in general, a much larger staff than the Steelers are willing to pay, and that's why the Steelers didn't continue to pursue them.

I've seen us compared to the Browns in this thread, but they're interviewing Scheelhaase next. This would be something the Bengals would do. Oof.

Not out of the realm of a possibility. Some things point to that for sure.

I didn’t arrive to the party till about 10 pages into this thread yesterday as I worked and didn’t even know about the hiring. To me,this was about the worst candidate they could hire among their interviews.

Now,that being said,I’ve read through all the comments. I truly hope Mike McCarthy hasn’t read this thread. I mean he’s one of Pittsburgh’s own stories. Because the hatred of this sign is quite evident. Of course now that it’s official I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. I’ve said for many years now whether it was for CMT or now CMM it was The owners decision. The verbiage should be directed to him.

Diving a little deeper here for me I think there was a huge opportunity to wipe away the stink that has happened regularly to this once proud organization the last 7+ years. The fans needed a breath of fresh air. CMM is not that. Perhaps it’s unfair to him but I think we were all ready for a bright young mind to come along, not another retread. It was a chance to wipe the slate clean. Do a reboot.
I will be able to tell exactly the way this organization is going by the way of the announcement of our next starting QB.

By the way….i know CMT made 16 million. I’m sure our new Mike will make about 10-11 million. I never read anywhere that he was in demand. Will Rooney pocket these savings or put the $$$$ into hiring quality assistants.

I wouldnt say there will be no improvement.

If all we gain is not having to listen to cliche after cliche when they lose, it will be an improvement.

Also, I think there will at least be an improvement in offensive play calling in game. Adjustments and the like.

All I remember from McCarthy in Greenbay was him calling plays on the sideline.

When you think about it, if that happens it will be a first in Steeler history.

Knoll didnt do it actively, Cowher didnt, and we know there wasn't anything going on with Shades on the sidelines.

I'll take that at least.

Still not going anywhere till the QB situation is settled.

if true this would be very dissapointing. A stale franchise with little hopes of been great ever again
