Steelers hiring McCarthy

Not what I expected. And certainly not a coach with a 5-year+ leash if things don't look better on the field.

Interesting twist to our legacy as a team, because I don't think this is a 15 year hire under any circumstance. When it comes to coaches, we are now like everyone else. And I think we need to hold him to the same standard as the rest of the league.

His job is to find and develop a quality QB in his 20's. If it doesn't happen by year 5, he should be gone.

15-20 year coaching runs are the exception rather than the norm in the NFL for legit reasons. Not all of them bad.

Perhaps it's time the Steelers start being a little more "like everyone else".

The Steelers have not exactly been the envy of success in the league for awhile now.

Hell if they wanted to hire retreads they could have settled for the the Bills coach at least he wins playoff games .

This is what you give the fans ? *******

Hell,I would have asked Bill Cowher to come back for 5 years to rebuild the team and culture first.

I don't get this at all. Is it because he's a Pittsburgh guy? You know damn well he grew up a Steeler fan.

The owner baffles my brain.

Are you kidding me same old Steelers, I am convinced Rooney needs to go.

Yes, sleepy potato needs to go.

This kind of move doesn't surprise me though if it happens. McCarthy has had success as an Xs and Os guy. In both Green Bay and Dallas. Player acquisition and drafting was handled 99% by their respective front offices.

If it happens this is an indictment of Tomlin and his player personnel acquisition practices that we are all well versed in...Rooney has seen enough and they will bring in someone to assist Khan and let McCarthy handle strategy and coaching hires. Don't be surprised if the GOAT reunites with his old coach as well.

When Cowher was still coach Rooney said something like " We dont rebuild, we reload." I guess they are going to die on that hill. This thing needs an almost complete teardown and rebuild.

I actually think there was a relatively large gap between McCarthy and the other candidates actually interviewed. As far as the entire interview process, extremely poor from the Steelers.
You’re probably right. I put him as the front runner but I thought Flores and Scheelhaase would have outside chances and both would receive face to face interviews. As much as I hated Tomlin I hate Art more. They both needed to go at the same time. Maybe Art is planning his exodus and thinks a 1-3 year of McCarthy might get him his ring as the owner. It won’t. Here’s to mediocrity boys. 🍻 drink up you are going to need it

100% panic hire, as said before. Complete and total lateral move. Chocolate milk to vanilla.

couldn't wait 24 hours to see if the Rams lost? WTAF?! Worried the Bungles would hire McCarthy and his wisdom?

The worst part about this pick is the team has now given up a number of promising young coaches with actual talent for a retread with minimal success. Even if he is successful for one or two years out of the four or five he has left in him, we will lament Minter beating us year in and out as we languish in the past/status quo. Hell, if the Browns are able to land one of these young guys then even they will probably do the same to us by year four of McCarthy.

Exactly... the announcement could have been made at 10pm tomorrow night.

Now, the offseason has really started and we suck donkey nuts.

**** I'm angry!!!

reminds me of the Vols deciding to hire Greg Schiano... then the fans and former players revolted online.

**** McCarthy. Even if every other mfker turns us down, he'd STILL be available.

If the Browns hire Scheelhaase - we're going be the worst team in the division.

I really don’t get why people are so against this hiring. We don’t have the talent on the team to do anything right now. But what we DO have is a young quarterback who needs coaching up. Who is better for that job than McCarthy? I think he’s a great stopgap type coach for the next few years and his teams are usually well-prepared.

I hope it's not a sign that the plan is to milk Aaron Rogers for as long as possible.

Again, the next 2-3 drafts HAVE to get us a top QB prospect (top 2 rounds) and this hire is all about how that pick/person turns out. Maybe Khan doens't have faith in his scouting ability and he wanted McCarthy to help him navigate this QB issue (because let's face it Khan's job might depend on it as well).

And there is no more BS "Steelers Way" or "No losing seasons" to prevent firing a coach/GM if they pick a lousy QB and fail to develop him into anything worth more than a bag of marbles.

Again.... anything is better than the monotony of Tomlin, but I am somewhat deflated. But I will give him an honest shot. It CAN be done. There are QB prospects out there. And McCarthy CAN coach QB's and offenses okay to above okay.

He just has to make it happen arguably by the end of 2028 season (at least have some hope/optimism at the position by end of 2028).

Hey, Rooney!

Come here!

I got something for ya!

Closer....... that's it.

Then hire him as a QB coach. It’s an awful hire from a strategic perspective.

We don't need a ******* stop gap.

We need NEW ******* FRESH IDEAS ON OFFENSE AND NEW ******* FRESH DEFENSIVE SCHEMES THAT STOP THE RUN AND COVER THE MIDDLE OF THE FIELD!!!

tons of guys better than him

****** hire

I will say, that I am also concerned because McCarthy is not particularly known to hire outstanding assistant coaches. He has a coaching tree, but it's nothing to write home about.

We do need better concepts/ideas on both sides of the ball. He needs to bring in a good defensive coordinate AND a good offensive coordinator. But I suspect there will be "old boys club" hires with this one.
