I liked all three candidates. Not sure Canada was the best option after the other two were announced.

Honestly yeah they had some good guys to pick from... I believe Canada is going to run a very different offense than Conservative Randy would dare

Its a good gamble...

I thought Tomlin said they wanted to hire an OL coach first???

Yeah Canada was the least proven of the three. But in the end, I truly believe it is hopeless until Tomlin is gone so what does it matter.

He did say that. I see that Fraley looks to be staying with the Lions now. I'm ok with the hiring of Canada but also would have been ok with Hue Jackson.

Tomlin will still run things. No QB sneaks even when Ben retires even though they work probably 90% (at least watching other teams do it) of the time on a yard or less.

Official

We have promoted Matt Canada to offensive coordinator.

Jury is out until we see how he progresses with scheme & play call. Will Tomlin give leeway, we'll have to wait and see on that as well.

EDIT: I wanted someone from outside the organization but CANADA's promotion is tied to BEN's return I'm guessing. NOT that BEN had say in this but i'm sure everyone felt they had experience together and good fit.

A couple of things to like about Canada...even though he was here for a season, he's still an outside hire (relatively speaking). It is also the candidate with the most unique offensive scheme and as long as they let him run with the offense, it should be a MUCH different feel than what we've been seeing from the Steelers in recent years. With that said, I think Roethlisberger is a bad fit for what Canada likes to do, so if he does come back, it limits some of the factors of the offense, particularly getting the QB on the move. Canada also runs a good bit from under center and play action, so we'll see how that goes as well.

not your typical in house hire though. It isn't like butler who was on the team forever before being promoted. Canada just came on board last year with much speculation he was there to replace Randy. Seems to me it was a "trial" year for Canada as much as it was for RF - just two different trials. and, thinking on it, not really a bad choice. Canada knows how to work with Ben at this point, can start to introduce is own stuff and be well positioned for the post Ben era with a say-so in who is next QB drafted and when.

in my head, I was hoping Munchak was coming back as offensive coord. and that would help our offensive line regardless of who they name as line coach

So here is the thing... there often is a one half to one year transition phase when changing systems.. during this time some of the new stuff is worked in along with some more familiar older plays that are retained... so for instance Arians first year was a ton of whiz plays... and fitchner called a ton of haley stuff his first year... even when hiring haley from outside, you saw a ton of the arians deep passes shifting safeties that first and even second season...

Canada coming in will not be a partial overhaul to the offense but I don’t think Ben will have to totally relearn everything in one year... by the time Canada goes full crazy motion, ben will probably be retired

I would think it wouldn't take a whole season to adapt. They can force feed his playbook in the offseason..... they have some extra time in-between watching the SB from the sofa.

It never totally works like that for anyone though... thats why all those media talking heads always use the term “fully implement his playbook” in stories about sophomore coaches and coordinators... or talk about how second year players finally know the playbook...
a total playbook and scheme is pretty substantial. Its not exactly something that even smart guys can pick up super quickly... and most football players aren’t that smart

I would think some of it was already implemented though.

If you think about it that way probably won't be that big of an adjustment.

I thought a "source" told a reporter that Tomlin said that. Could be wrong, but that's what the reporter's tweet said.

Tomlin has been a big disappointment the last bunch of years. All the talent that was here and we come up short year in and year out. Do the players need to take some responsibility?...yep. In the end though.
Tomlin is the HC. We as a team have failed horribly. Probably time to move on from Tomlin a few years ago. Whether the source was wrong or right....Tomlin in the end has failed badly.

I hear yaz Hoot and Like I said I'm pretty sure that is why they went with Canada. I know BEN's familararity had to factor in. The biggest reason I wanted outside hire is it would be totally fresh and possibly the OC would be less apt to fall to Tomlin's conservative approach. Canada may be slightly conditioned but I'm hoping for a more open offense but not a college offense.

yea, he probably got along better with the OL coach there.

So here is the proof needed in the hire the OL coach first as they say.

When is BB going to step to the plate and say he is in or not. That’s the only spot I wanna know.
