The Pittsburgh Steelers entered training camp with a backup quarterback competition that appeared designed to create an opportunity for youth. One passer offered developmental upside and needed the live work he lost as a rookie. The other arrived with years of NFL experience, but no guarantee that reliability would outweigh Pittsburgh’s desire to evaluate the future. Early camp work is beginning to make that choice less theoretical.
