Steelers FA news...interesting

The Steelers will do what they do...sign some mid level guys who will outplay their contract unlike most of the big name free agents....

similar to saying "when Coolie isn't drunk, he's a damn good accountant. Nevermind his tenure at Enron."

The guys at Enron were pretty smart even got a stadium named after them. You must be thinking of when he worked at K-mart before all the closings.

Steelers' free-agent visits to include Pro Bowl LB Hightower

One of the top remaining NFL free agents is expected to meet with the Steelers this week, and the team also is looking at several other more affordable players.

Pro Bowl linebacker Dont'a Hightower, a starter for the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots, would be a replacement for inside linebacker Lawrence Timmons, who accepted a two-year, $12 million deal with Miami on Friday.

But the 27-year-old Hightower is thought to be out of the Steelers' price range.

He reportedly turned down a contract extension with New England before the season that would have paid him $10 million per season. He already has visited the New York Jets, and the Patriots have been trying to re-sign him.

On Monday, the Steelers met with outside linebacker Jay Elliott, formerly of the Green Bay Packers, and wide receiver Justin Hunter, a former Tennessee Titans second-round draft pick, at UPMC Rooney Sports Performance Complex. Elliott re-signed with the Packers later in the day.

The team will visit with former Green Bay Packers and Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Davon House on Tuesday.

House, 27, could address the team's depth at cornerback. Artie Burns and Ross Cockrell are the starters, but Cockrell is a restricted free agent, and the Steelers offered him only a fourth-round tender at $1.797 million.

Top backup William Gay is 32, lost his starting job last year and was ineffective in the AFC championship game loss at New England.

House was drafted by the Packers in the fourth round in 2011. After four years in Green Bay, he signed a four-year, $24.5 million contract with Jacksonville in 2015.

The Jaguars released House, who was due to make base salaries of $6 million the next two seasons. House only started four games last year for Jacksonville but has missed only three games in the past four seasons.

Hunter, 25, was the 34th player taken overall in 2013 by the Titans out of the University of Tennessee. After spending three seasons with the Titans, Hunter played one game with Miami and 11 with Buffalo last year.

With the Bills, Hunter had 10 catches for 189 yards and four touchdowns. He has 78 career receptions for 1,305 yards and 12 touchdowns.

The only free-agent signings for the Steelers have been internal options: backup quarterback Landry Jones and blocking tight end David Johnson.

Remaining Steelers players on the unrestricted free-agent market are Jones, defensive end Ricardo Mathews, safety Shamarko Thomas, offensive lineman Cody Wallace and running back DeAngelo Williams. Jones was scheduled to meet with the Arizona Cardinals on Monday.

and Hightower is not that. The days of fitting 10 lbs of **** in a 5 lb bag is few and far between. These players want paid and will play for Jax or Cev, if they need to.

Ian Rapoport‏ @RapSheet
#Packers are bringing back CB Davon House, as @TomSilverstein said. House gets 1-yr, roughly $3.5M, source said (while visiting Pitt today)

On to the next bargin CB....

Thought they already met with House. I guess today is potentially the big day for Steelers FA news. We should hear something, good or bad, about House and Hightower by the end of the day.

Well, there you go. We waited too long and didn't even get an opportunity to meet with House.

Would you consider Terrance Newman at 39 years old for our nickel position? He played 743 snaps at was rated 3rd best FA CB at 86.4.

Hell, at this point, we need someone. We have 4 CB's on the team and one of them has never practiced in 2 years since entering the NFL. They should now be bringing in every FA CB left out there. We need a warm body at least for camp and to play during the season.

House got a free tour and meal from Steeler FO and signed with GB. Ouch! Hope it's not a trend. To trot Gay, Jarvis and Shamarko back out there is not inspiring.

He was still at the complex, and received an offer from Pittsburgh but decided to go back home to GB.

Saw that. That sucks. Figured they would offer him up to $4 million. He would be our No. 2 CB instantly even though he had issues last year. Guess our offer was less than $3.5 mil.

Malcolm Butler, come on down.

If I remember correctly Newman was a track guy with legit 4.25 speed coming into the NFL. Kind of like Daryl Green when you are that fast and lose a step you are still really freaking fast.

24 7 Sports reporting Steelers gaining momentum with Hightower possibly signing. May be looking at asking guys like DeCastro, Pouncey and Ben to restructure.
He's a definite upgrade over Timmons but man I don't get this one. Why not just pay Timmons. He signed for 12 mil two years so don't know why we couldn't have done that. Hightower had to be 10-12 mill per season.
I know Butler very high on him. We shall see.

So we only have 2 guys who can rush a passer, and one of them is 1,000 years old and the other is young and unproven
We only have one CB who can reliably cover a receiver and he is a largely unproven rookie going into year 2

.. and we're about to throw a significant amount of cap space at an inside linebacker

The need for an ILB is vastly, incalculably less than the need for a top-tier pass-rusher and high-performing CB.

Makes no sense. Do they think Hightower can defend the pass? If so, apparently they have never watched film on him. Can he stuff the run? Yes. So can Vince Williams for a fraction the price.

For the money they would spend on Hightwower, they could have had signed Gilmore and focused on pass rushers in the draft. They would have had 3 good CB's, a solid DL, an improving OLB on the strong side, and a top-tier weak-side pass rusher from the draft.

Here is what I don't understand with you guys. Who is to say he is purely an ILB? He did some nice things lining up outside and rushing the passer. Now Tomlin is always talking about being a flexible defense. Hightower was moved around up in NE. Maybe he could do that here? Perhaps you could have a guy with some position flexibility that would lessen the need to go OLB in RD1. If they sign him, maybe you can go corner and then olb.

Dreamer, silly little dreamer

Butler, Saints discussing contract

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports restricted free agent CB Malcolm Butler and the Saints have opened contract negotiations.

Rapoport adds the two sides "hope to strike a deal this week." There are not many other reasons for Butler to be visiting the Saints except to work on a deal, but this is notable nevertheless. The Saints would owe New England the No. 11 overall pick if the Patriots decline to match an offer sheet, but that is likely more than they are willing to pay. The two sides will likely try to work out a trade.

Texans interested in Malcolm Butler

Yahoo Sports' Eric Edholm reports the Texans are interested in Patriots restricted free agent Malcolm Butler, and would be willing to trade a second-round pick.

Well if we do bring him in and let him line up outside and blitz and have position flexibility, then cool and I will stand corrected. But he is an inside linebacker by trade and this certainly has the appearance of a reaction to losing Timmons more so than it does looking for a pass rusher. But if they truly believe he can help with the outside rush, and he actually signs and not just parading around for a better offer from New England, and then he actually gets here and gets sacks and pressures, then I'll be thru the roof.

Lol @ you saying you don't understand though. You understand perfectly well my position. You just wanted a 'gotcha' moment like 'oh bet ya don't know he can rush the passer!' And besides, I still want a ******* corner because at least we have one ROLB and one LOLB who can play, so that's theoretically starters on both sides. We just need depth and to build for the future, for which I'm totally okay going ham in the draft. Meanwhile, we have ONE corner I trust right now. Could become two if Golson is as advertised. We need the help NOW

How dare you question something they might do!
I couldn't agree more, the guy is a thumper, he's not a great pass rusher and he's not that good in coverage, yet people want us to throw 10 million at this type of LB in a passing era would be stupid!

What evidence do we have that he can play OLB and rush the passer? The Patsies pass rush struggled at times last year, and the team did not call on Hightower to play OLB and help with the issue. He ran a decent 4.68 at the combine, with a 32" vertical. Good-not-great numbers. (Keuchly, for comparison, ran a 4.58 with a 38" vertical. Bruce Irvin ran a 4.50.)

I think that the evidence is that the Steelers would put him at Timmons' old spot. That is not saying, of course, that he won't be moved around as the defense tries to disguise the blitzer, but it is a stretch to believe he can be a good edge pass rusher. He did not play edge rusher for Bama, did not play edge rusher for the Pats, and has 17 totals sacks in 5 seasons for the Pats, with just 6 the past 2 seasons combined.
