How predictable was the Pittsburgh Steelers offense in 2020?

Last season, the Pittsburgh Steelers was hard to watch at times. This should have never been the case given the sheer volume of talent on the team. Nevertheless, the Pittsburgh offense, even at its best in 2020 wasn’t where it should be.

If you need a little more proof of that, according to NFL reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala, players who went against the Steelers said their offense was the easiest to prepare for.

This concept seems completely mind-boggling unless you watched them play. The Steelers were No. 24 in total offense and No. 12 in scoring offense last season. They were dead last in rushing yards per game as well as yards per attempt and were No. 24 in the NFL in passing yards per attempt. Literally, nothing worked.

2021 brings hope. Out is Randy Fichtner and in is Matt Canada as offensive coordinator. Hopefully this move, along with an overhaul of the offensive line will mean the end of predictability.

Duh. Most of us here know tge basics of nfl play and scheme design and to call ours sophomoric would be giving it too much credit

Lets break down the issues

First and foremost a blocking scheme that was fundamentally unsound and confusing ... hey if I drew up a play where the Center chips multiple people then scampers downfield to throw a key block that sounds great, but in reality it probably won’t work the way its drawn up

You saw guys just overwhelmed with no help.. you saw guys trying to do so much that they blew other simple things... this more than anything led to the last few years of bad snaps by pouncey... but it was so much more... there was no ability to drive block in this scheme ... this was due to bad leverage from bad fundamentals... when teams started just standing back and batting balls down we should have just mauled them in the run game...

Sure the sack numbers were low due to ben just firing the ball... but the dead run game came from pressure and penetration up the middle and telegraphing the run through formation , personnel, and stances... moreover there were more illegal men downfield penalties this year... The qbs getting rid of the ball quickly also gave the opponents dline and lbs a pretty easy clock to time batted balls and dbs breaking on routes...Arians-esque designed pump fakes would have been devastating to the D... but we probably didn’t have real time for that

Secondly telegraphing the play through formation, personnel, and tendencies... every single team has an analytics guy who comes up with what a team tends to do in down distance and game situation... this can be very accurate by seasons end... none are ernie adams of course... but by seasons end we had more tells than a 2nd grade schoolgirl...

Thirdly terrible gameplans.. they lacked cohesion they didn’t build on each other... it was just a bunch of plays feeling out the D... they didn’t exploit a weakness or avoid a strength... the first quarter was always us digging a hole to get out of

Fourth our route design was rudimentary at best... i mean we had some well designed older plays still in there... sure, but those aren’t surprising anyone... a lot of plays, especially mid to deep middle ones, youd see multiple recievers in the area dragging extra coverage in with them...

Everyone knows that in a modern offense, a play has a bunch of pre snap adjustments based on what look the defense shows...for example, there are nine basic routes for wrs... lets say the original play calls for the X wr to run a short crossing route, but the db is playing tight to the line and both safeties are cheating up... the QB and WR should both read that to switch the route to a go or deep post.. or whatever the scheme calls for... and depending on the OC’s schemes these can get pretty complicated... rpute design can be fairly precise

Our offense was predictable.. so the D could show one thing and goad the offense into a defendable play... show a weak look up the middle then run blitz... show deep coverage then jump short routes...

A good offense manipulates the defense.. when the defense is doing that to you, well you suck

That makes it two years in a row we've had the easiest offense to prepare for. The sad thing is we did it to ourselves by making it easy on the defense. That speaks to poor coaching more than poor talent.

It's even more amazing how the guys that are supposed to be "sports talk guys" in PIttsburgh totally ignore the fact that our offense looked identical in 2019 without Ben, but insist the offense looks like it does because that's how Ben wants it.

dude.. you probably make your wife put on a ben mask in bed.

He is probably talking about the Fan.. they are really bad at takes there... i think they ate trying to be madden lite on controversial takes but they just come off as un-knowledgeable on topics...

Bens arm wasn’t toast like some opined. Brees arm was toast this year... I watched a bunch of their games... the saints worked around his limitations without kneecapping the offense.. heck they won with a TE under center a few games...

Brady threw a bunch of picks in their playoff games... he had a few miserable games this year where he looked lost and old... Tampa is in the super bowl

Coaching matters more in the nfl than any other major sport in the world... ours was really bad the past few years. It’s not a narrative... it is what it is.. the fan blames Ben, Bell, Brown, Pouncey, JuJu, Conner... whomever they are scapegoating.. but its not the actual issue

Remember the narrative that you cannot win with guys like Bell or Brown in the locker room... well it’s getting downplayed like hell now

Or how Juju and Conner fumbled too much.. made after juju lost a key fumble and despite he did everything absolutely perfect from a technical stance and had one of the lowest fumble rates in the league... and Conners was just average...

Yeah they just don’t actually learn to the x’s and o’s... they don’t know the stats or the advanced metrics... they don’t see a big picture viewpoint and they don’t watch a lot of other teams to get perspective
They have a narrative... they push it... its not journalism .. its basically the equivalent of most posters here talking on the radio...

Dude, good add to the conversation, on par with most of your posts, zero content.

I'll type slowly for you, I'm simply pointing out that the idiots on the fan, blame every single aspect of this offense on Ben, to a comical level, that's it, that's all. Stop trying to read to much into ****, it makes you sound like a moron.

You really think the offense looked different in 2019 compared to 2020? Ben fan or not, you can't deny that it is the same concepts on offense and no run game.

Thank you, someone can actually comprehend a post and not try to read way to much into it.

It was a joke at coryea,, who got butt hurt over it.

I think the offense looked the same too. I'm merely making a joke because you're the biggest ben lover i ever seen. I dont even know if you know you do it. But whatever.

Ahhh the old, "it was a joke" back pedal. You posted exactly what I posted, as did mdk, it has nothing to do with being a Ben fan or not, I'm pointing out the moron they have talking sports on the radio here in Pittsburgh. Nothing more, nothing less. I guess you're looking to hard to make jokes.

How could i POSSIBLY top this content. OMG , the content of my reply can come nowhere near this level.

holy ****,, sport talk guys opinions. They dont like ben. wtf Tom.

Everyone knows our offense scheme is **** and the team lives or dies with ben. The fact that you posted this proves what theyre saying / doing is working. Generatiing click bait and listeners calling in.

PLease.

LMAO, awwwww who is butt hurt now? Relax Francis

I'm not generating **** for them, who are the hosts? I'm not posting links. **** opinions, they're just ******* stupid, am I not allowed to bash them? They were actually blame Sarrett, the OL coach for playing Feiler over Dotson in the playoff game, everyone knows that's Tomlin's decision.

Our opinions, some sports guys opinions don't mean ****.

What I hope is going on over there at the Steeler offices is a good, hard, honest look at all the issues. They all deserve some blame for the mess this past season became. We have no idea what goes on behind closed doors, but unfortunately it does seem like the coach escapes some of that blame. At least publicly.

I have been one who feels Ben is partly responsible for what we see. Saying that does not absolve the HC in any way. Because some of these guys are right, the offense didn't look much different in 2019. Part of me wishes they'd ditch 'em all and start fresh.

Gentlemen, it is perceived that everyone is using mask speak when it is ineviably about smoke and mirrors.
