Steelers claimed WR Devin Gardner

Man, I hope Archer pulls off a few long TDs early in season to shut all the nay-sayers mouths.

I'm indifferent on him as it stands now, but I want him to succeed. He has only had 10 rushing attempts and 7 receptions on 10 targets. Good thing we did not give up on LeVeon after his first 10 carries.

you say that as if there would ever have been a chance of that happening.

When you say "we", are you referring to "we" the fans, or the Steelers organization?

I'm gonna be in holy Toledo next week!! So when football season starts I gots lots of options as where to go Sunday. Detroit,Chicago, cinn, Cleveland , Pitt ect... But hell yeah canton bound I am!!!

My opinion of Devin Gardner. Best case scenario he is the next Anquan Boldin. If you rememver Boldin ran like a 4.7 40 time but from playing QB he had a very good understanding of pro style offenses and what a QB expects from a receiver. Also, Boldin is 6-1. Gardner is a gamer and a very hard working kid. I could see him making the team being a utility guy in year one. Imagine a emergency QB, RB, and 6th WR and a special teams gunner. He'd fill several positions allowing the team to maybe suit up an extra OL and keep any extra player they would have else hoped cleared waivers for the PS. Hell, if he can get Landry off the team he's worth it lol.

We == either. I always use we, when referring to the Steelers.

I just threw LeVeon's name in for example. "Good thing we did not give up on XXXXX after his first 10 carries" The fact that people are giving up on anyone after 10 carries is ludicrous, much less a 3rd round pick.

Now that to me is a compelling reason to keep the kid, more so than converting him to tight end. He could be a slash type player in some situations.

Would still be nice to have a GO or MOVE TE. You know, the type that constantly beats our defense. :cents:

Ok fine, he gets 10 more.

Lol...keep dreaming, if indeed that's your dream to see Dri Archer fail...
Agreed. Most of us enjoy saying I told you so. But any fan should be happy to be wrong a bout a player or coach on their team. I'd love to be proven wrong about Jones or Tomlin (though some would say I already have when it comes to Tomlin and that is fair).

as long as taj or Gardner beat out laundry and he is released it is a bonus, he wastes a roster spot, can't light up 3rd stringers or sustain drives he is a career #3. lets see some reed option with taj and dri some sweeps and counters and with gardner some short throws if he makes the final 53

Buck we will just disagree on that, but over the season we might find out if the guy makes the team and gets placed in that role. If he does you can come back and beat me over the head with it then and I will say loudly that you are correct deal?:friendly_wink:

Wing, I don't BELIEVE that they will try GARDNER in that role specifically. All I'm saying is that if they are going to keep 3 - 4 TEs (probably three plus Will Johnson as FB/H-Back/TE), I'd prefer to see them either keep a Move/Go type TE; OR, using what is available on the roster more effectively, get Johnson some action in that type of role. It's a valuable weapon for any offense to have in today's NFL.

As for Gardner, I actually like the idea of him in that slash type role. Only problem is that he can't pass very well. Strong arm, but accuracy issues.

Gardner is a great character guy, good leader/locker room guy but I highly doubt he has NFL level WR skills and athleticism

I do not know what Gardner brings but if he shows anything over a cup of soup I would use him as a slash type player and let L. Jones beat feat as the third QB................

Interesting article on Archer. Didn't wan to start a new thread.

Dri Archer? who's he? we drafted him?

It's a high enough pick to expect steady contributions and/or and eventual starting role for the player

Obviously the guy is an idiot. Everyone knows that 3rd round picks are never expected to do much and that a 3rd round picks aren't very valuable.

I'm calling it right now: Archer 500yds rush + rec, 3 TDs, + 1 TD KR/PR. So 500yds + 4 TDs.

McClusters stats went up a lot from year one to year two so it wouldn't be a shock if he had a decent second season. I hated how the Steelers used him last season. Up the gut runs. Bubble screen pass plays. I'd rather have him sit in the backfield and motion him in the slot to try to get him on a linebacker. He should never be in the backfield trying to take on a Blitzer. I'd rather him run a quick slant from the slot if a LB looks like he's going to blitz. I think putting him as a dump off for Ben when he's not running or running a route. And if he runs half of them should be to the outside not everyone to the middle.

McCluster was more well rounded in college and did almost everything. Archer was never a PR in college and used sparingly in the passing game. He has no role in the NFL because when he is in the game teams know what is coming. You can't have a player that can only be used on a quick slant. NFL teams aren't that stupid. Also using Archer means that you aren't using Bell, Brown, Wheaton, Bryant ETC.. I'd rather have the ball in their hands than Archer.

Last year was Archer's first and he was injured. That sets a rookie back way, way more than a veteran player. Most label him a bust as it seems the majority on here like to do if they don't perform in the first game of their rookie season. If he is healthy this year, I would almost guarantee his numbers will be a ton better than last year and he will show signs of being something special. Give the guy a chance. It's not like he was a first round pick.

I don't know anyone calling him a bust because of last year. Most didn't like him the second he was drafted for reasons already outlined. Getting hurt was also a reason most didn't like the pick. He was hurt in college as well. He has no position. He isn't a RB, PR or a WR. If he can't return kickoffs then what do they do with him? KR aren't something a rookie should struggle with and he struggled so bad he was benched. Maybe Haley can figure out a way to use him but he was always a huge reach IMHO.
