Steelers claimed WR Devin Gardner off waivers from the Patriots.
The ex-Michigan quarterback was waived on Monday. Gardner has an NFL frame (6-foot-4, 216 pounds), but lacks high-end athleticism. His stay in Pittsburgh probably won't be a whole lot longer than his stopover in New England.

bye, bye Archer

so Gardner won't last long but he will replace Archer

I suspect that it might have to do with the position of wide receiver although I do not no how they could be connected more than that. I sure as hell would not want anyone on the team from the cheatriots ever, it is just a way to have a copy of the playbook sold, how hard could it be to scan and email an NFL playbook?

Here's $8K...Tell me what you know. Thanks,...bye.

Be a nice camp body. We had one extra roster spot left.

Don't be surprised if the kid makes a push. He may not have all the measurables, but having watched him against the Buckeyes over the last few years, I can tell you he's a competitor. Plus, you can't teach 6-4, 218. I could see him making a push for the final roster but being relegated to the PS for seasoning. Hell, they could put him on an NFL diet and lifting program and make a GO-TE out of him.

And he would be smaller than 4 that are trying to make the team now, and likely less useful in that role than our 4th wide out. Not sure I see value in a "go" tight end I feel like we would be better off with a real tight end or a two running back set.

Which may be a better fit if he indeed runs a 4.6 40...

I wondered about that. Thought he would have ran faster, but also remember him having some sort of leg injury during the season and at the Shrine game. Looked it up and:

Michigan senior QB/WR Devin Gardner has been battling a leg injury, reports NFL Media analyst Charles Davis.
Despite the injury, Davis thinks Gardner "showed improvement with each day of practice here at the Shrine Game." The 6-foot-4, 220-pounder has been drawing positive reviews from evaluators watching his acclimation to receiver at the Shrine Game. "I think he's going to keep getting better, too -- I would love to see where he's at with his progress in a month," Davis wrote. "He'll continue to refine his route running, and he's a smart player who's familiar with a pro-style offense. We'll have to see how he develops, but I've heard from a lot of teams that are intrigued by him."

Also was injured in Oct against Penn State http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2203641-devin-gardner-injury-updates-on-michigan-stars-status-and-return

Injury MAY have been a factor in that 40 time. Might not. But, I wouldn't count the kid out. He's tough and competitive. Sometimes that will get you further than measurables.

DHB is our 4th WR. Let that sink in. Coates may eventually take that spot (I think he will). But I can see the value in at least having a GO on your roster. It's another weapon in the passing game. Since the rules favor the passing game more than anything, it's a valuable weapon to have if you can find or develop one.

As far as him being small for a TE, that's why I said you could stash him on the PS and put him on an NFL diet and weight lifting program.

Don't you understand that it's just that time of the year. Time for us to evaluate and over-inflate the chances of every rookie/UDFA and free agent signee to make the team. It's a fun exercise while we wait for camp. Some of those guys will surprise and make a push. But in reality we understand that most of the guys we pimp now we are pimping out of boredom and a desire to see an underdog at least make some waves.

DHB ll not be the 4th WR Coats wil easily snag that title from him, it would be nice if they try some randle el trick plays from agrdiner like thl sweep and throw, a flea flea flicker here n there.

I was meaning the 4 tight ends trying to make the team, not the wide outs. I suspect the 4 best guys at tight end are already 20 to 30 lbs bigger and just as fast except maybe Miller at this point in his game. And I understand your point about wishing guys to do well in the preseason but we also bash them at that time too. Particularly when we think they are wasting a spot.

Was thinkin' the same thing .... 'specially after watchin' the SBXL highlights on ESPN earlier today.

there are about 26 guys or more wasting a spot on the preseason roster. Those are the guys who won't make the team or practice squad. But you need those guys during camp. And occasionally one of them will surprise you. I'm sure Willie Parker, Ramon Foster, James Harrison, Steve McLendon, etc etc. etc. were all at one time or another looked at as guys who were wasting a spot. It's a competition and if one of those "spot wasters" proves they belong more than someone else ... Fantastic. If not, they've served a purpose in helping to sort out and prepare those who do.

Btw, the kid whose spot he took was L'Damian Washington. I've never heard of him. Doesn't mean he didn't have a chance either. However, he was waived injured. So they replaced an injured WR with little chance to make the team with a healthy WR who they had shown interest in during the draft process (yet still little chance to make the team). From my perspective, the spot was being wasted by keeping the injured player.

And you ASSume Archer is gone how???

I can't see them inviting him as a WR. Michigan tried him at WR and he stunk.

Do the Steelers WANT an option QB? It sure looks that way with Tajh Boyd, Tyler Murphy, and now Gardner. Maybe they are planning to use a read option package to compensate while Bell is suspended.

Bell is suspended, so you want to change QB also?

No, but maybe they want to have a read option package that they can use in certain situations. Why else bring in 3 read option QBs who are not good passers?

Gardner is a very athletic guy and I believe his 40 yrd dash numbers were bad due to injury. Have you seen him play? He is athletic and a slippery guy when he runs. We could use a guy for special teams and returns.

is he better than Landry Jones?
yes

He won't play qb. Taj Boyd may beat out Landry Jones.
