A lot of experience..... His second Steelers go around.............

I hope Ron's sitting down when he reads this.

(But then again coaching wide receivers is different than play-calling)

When I saw the title I'm going please don't let it be Haley.

Re-reading that post of mine, it comes across as jackassish(is that even a word). I'll edit it.

I like spur of the moment type words.

Yes Cowher fired him as an OC because he wasn't so good at that with the team we had. Couldn't seem to call plays to our strengths at the time. I think RAY has come a ways since those days and hopefully he can continue on with the STEELERS wide receivers not missing a beat.

Guy has a long history around offense and receivers. He stayed in the league a long time even if his stints at OC weren't as successful as he would have liked. He brings a veteran coach presence to a young group and his resume is strong enough to garner instant respect. Seems like a good move and darn good of him to step in given he retired after 2015. I would guess the plan is to have him for the season so the team can do a full search spring of 2020.

Welcome back Coach Sherman. Just out of curiosity, what does a positional coach make in the NFL? In general of course,I am sure it varies by different personal.

Sad circumstances, but welcome back coach Sherman. He will be fine.

It sure is a nice gesture of him to come out of retirement and lead these young men. I was just thinking about it and there's not a receiver over 26 in that room, is there? He's also lost one of his own children, so he knows tragedy.

Welcome back coach and wish you all the best.

Evidently not enough to buy you & your wife's drinks down town....... OH wait, that was OC "fighting" Todd's pay.

I'm not sure what the pay sale is around the league.

It is a bit telling that Sherman was only OC for 1 season with the Steelers before being fired, but I've heard he's done well with wide receiver coaching jobs throughout the NFL.

Coffee for the Head Coach

How much do NFL position coaches make?
Only three years ago, the average salary for assistant coaches was in the $150,000-$175,000 range. There are position coaches now pulling in $400,000 or more per season.

Sherman was a bad OC and has been out of coaching for a while. The game has changed a bit too. I get the Steeler had to find a replacement quickly, but inactive and fired in one season doesn’t inspire confidence.

Well...I guess at this late date there were few candidates available. This guy has some experience for sure but to be honest, I see marginal talent screaming off his resume.

A guy that's been sittin' on the couch for three years with mostly 1 year and done contracts with a couple 3 or 4 year stints on his resume seems like a stop gap hire to me.... jus sayin'

If we are lookin' for this guy to make any kinda difference, I wouldn't hold my breath.

So did I, but it's quite likely he refused.

Being an NFL assistant coach is a crap-ton of work and I suppose you're not going to find anyone available at this late date. If people are retired, they're retired for a reason and unlikely to want to go back to 80 hour workweeks. I would have tried to pry Hines Ward away from the Jets though.

Oh HELL yea Ron, Ward would have been an excellent hire. Maybe they tried and he said no, we will never know. I'm hoping Ray can battle one year and then bring in a better hire. Nothing against RAY but his tank has to be near empty.

Coach Drake's death really has put Coach Tomlin in a tough position. You got rid of a prima donna WR but have a lot of relatively new talent that needs a strong coach. Hopefully, more experienced players like Donte Montcrief and Heyward Bey can step up and provide leadership.

I commend Coach Sherman for being willing to step up to the plate. Long term it would be great if Hine Ward would come back. I read he was "interning" with the Jets. I doubt at this late date that he would bail on them.

I know Lynn Swann is the AD at USC but I wonder if he would be available? Trouble is would he be as good a coach as he was a receiver AND he isn't a youngster anymore.

Let's hope for the best.
