Steelers, Bell Fail to Reach Long-Term Deal Before Deadline

How many times does this need to be pointed out, you cannot do that. This isn't the NBA. And now that the deadline has passed, we can't do **** because he isn't under contract until his signs his franchise tender...keep up people.

He's not just another great RB, and they don't come around a lot. There's none like him right now, and the ones that are close, are still a solid step down in terms of all around game.

With that said, he was too stubborn and not willing to budge at all. $13.3 was last years offer, they increased it this year... still wasn't good enough. That's on him, not the Steelers. They were willing to pay him more than $5m a year more than the next highest... oh well. Get that ring this year, and he can go rack up stats for some perennial loser

The Steelers are an exceptional franchise. We do not need his ***. I feel nothing. We will be more than fine without him. He wont be **** when he leaves. **** him....I have seen way too many Steeler teams to believe that this ******* is the begin and end all. I repeat....**** him...

**** the *******. break the team for you? **** you.

Lets go Connor! get some **** going my friend.

What a selfish POS. Sorry, but I won't lose any sleep if he blows a knee in the final play of us winning the big game.

I actually hope he sits out the first 8 weeks. He won't but I could care less about him even being on this team. He would have to be an idiot to sit out games. Wait a second. Hmmmm

Wow! That’s ******* nuts to have turned that down. From a guy who is one failed test from another suspension, who has turned in only one 16 game season, had a couple significant injuries, had his YPC drop from 4.9 to 4.0 from 2016 to 2017.
You want to turn that kind of deal down that sets you up for life at 26 years old and chance that you stay healthy in 2018. That’s ******* plain stupid.

I wish they could work out a deal with say the Jets for their first round pick where they would be foolish enough to sign him after he inks the tag.

He will be under some major scrutiny this season from Steeler fans.!

No surprise. If it weren't for the salary cap I'd say pay the man, but it is what it is.

This is where I am. I would have liked the guy to finish his career here, but that isn't his priority. He's already helped set a new RB market with the Steelers latest offer and he'll be motivated to have a great season to cash in on a big contract. As long as he helps us win a title, I really don't care where he goes after the season.

Nothing to see here. I hope Bell all the best. Hope he is sincere about 2018 being his best season. That means it will give the Steelers a great chance to make a run. But turning down that kind of money is insane. He got too caught up in this "reset the market" ****. I can't think of a situation where the Steelers would have paid this much over the market for a player or ever have. They made him a fantastic offer. For Bell to want to more than double the market on his contract alone is really ridiculous. The Steelers have no problem paying market value or a little above for players they think deserve it. And they went above and beyond for Bell in this case. This is it for him after this year regardless of what Colbert says. Let's see what Conner/Samuels has and add a player like Tevin Coleman or a draft pick to that room next year and keep it moving. That's a perfectly adequate room of backs for a fourth of the cost. They may be able to finally go and get a decent pass rusher or a premier inside linebacker with the cap space as well.

I let it sit and I still feel the same. I want him gone. Let him and his retarded *** Twitter account go to some ****** team like the Jets. I just feel the right thing to do is move him while you can get value. And that window is when he signs his tag. AB says he will play angry. I don't want to even remotely risk that spilling into the locker room. We seen how loose lips he is on social media. Wouldn't be a stretch to see it spill into the locker room in his last season. And if nobody is a taker? I rotate the SOB with JC and JaySam. First distraction I suspend him. I wouldn't play with this ignorant mememe.

I’m with you here. I wish a deal could be worked out with a team like the Jets with all of their cap space where we could have him sign the franchise and trade him for their first round pick. I’m afraid if we don’t try and move him yes he could be a distraction.
I think everyone is just sick of all the drama. We dumped one drama queen and it wouldn’t break my heart to dump this one as well. We need more character guys like JuJu, James Washington and Mason Rudolph and dump the me guys. That’s all Bell is about, me and **** the team. Just pay me and I don’t care about your cap space.

Bell is taking a huge risk. People point to how it worked out for Cousins to keep doing the franchise until finally getting a big deal but he's a QB. QBs can play into their 40s and missing a season with a blown out knee is just a blip on the radar.

Bell is a RB and nobody pays RBs as they approach 30. If Bell gets hurt this year, he probably has to sign a "prove it" deal next year and then after that, the market may not be as big for him as he approaches 28 years old.

This is a situation where both the steelers and Bell did what they had to do. The Steelers just can't pay any more than that for a position that is so prone to injury and has a short career. And Bell feels strongly that he deserves more because he does more. Bell is not wrong but he just has the misfortune of playing the position that is the riskiest investment.

I just hope Bell is doing this for his own reasons and not because the union is pushing him to hold out to try to change the RB market. The union heads don't give a **** about individual players. They will always sacrifice today's player for what they could possibly gain for the future.

I'm glad he didn't sign the deal. He wanted to re-set the market for the RB position BUT is too stupid to realize the following:

1.) A RB who is 1 failed test from a SECOND suspension is NOT a candidate to re-set the market for RBs.

2.) A RB who just finished the season nearly a full yard per carry under his previous year is NOT a candidate to re-set the market for RBs

3.) A RB who missed 15 games (not including playoffs) in the last 3 seasons is NOT a candidate to re-set the RB market

4.) A RB who sets the bar with over 300 carries and is over 1600 yds on the season has followed up with horrible numbers, injuries and down significantly in yards per carry the following year.
Examples:
2016- Zeke Elliott - 322 carries, 5.1/att - 1994 total yards
2017- Zeke Elliott - 242 carries, 4.1/att - 1252 total yards (missed 6 games)

2015 - A. Peterson - 327 carries, 4.5/att - 1707 total yards
2016 - A. Peterson - 37 carries, 1.9/att - 80 total yards (missed 13 games)

2014 - Le'Veon Bell - 290 carries, 4.7/att - 2215 total yards
2015 - Le'Veon Bell - 113 carries, 4.9/att - 692 total yards (missed 10 games)

2014 - Dem. Murray - 392 carries, 4.7/att - 2261 total yards
2015 - Dem. Murray - 193 carries, 3.6/att - 1024 total yards (missed 8 games)

2013 - Lesh. McCoy - 314 carries, 5.1/att - 2146 total yards
2014 - Lesh. McCoy - 312 carries, 4.2/att - 1474 total yards

2012 - A. Peterson - 348 carries, 6.0/att - 2314 total yards
2013 - A. Peterson - 279 carries, 4.5/att - 1437 total yards (missed 2 games)

2012 - A. Foster - 351 carries. 4.1/att - 1641 total yards
2013 - A. Foster - 121 carries 4.5/att - 725 total yards (missed 8 games)

2011 - M. Jones Drew - 343 carries, 4.7/att - 1980 total yards
2012 - M. Jones Drew - 86 carries, 4.8/att - 500 total yards (missed 10 games)

I could go on BUT these players historically suffer a setback year following a heavy use year AND THEREFORE should NOT be candidates to re-set the RB market

5.) A RB who seems more concerned with himself, his horrid rap abilities (I bet he thinks he's a good rapper too), and who was 26th in YPC in the last year should NOT be a candidate to re-set the RB market

Run the wheels off him OR trade his ***...I'm done with this ME'VEON Bell on this team!

The last known offer before this weekend from the Steelers was 13.3/year with 30 million guaranteed in the first two years. So if it was a 5 year contract, Bell could have if he played through the contract would’ve made at least 70 million not counting incentive bonuses. That’s AB money. So good luck to him and playing for mediocre franchises. Hopefully he has his best year, so he can cash in on that extra $$. No doubt he thinks the extra 20 million he will get is worth it while sitting at home in January with another team.

@RapSheet
From what I understand, the #Steelers’ final offer to RB Le’Veon Bell was 5 years, $70M with more than $30M over 2 years. Last year, the offer was 5 years, $60M. ... Instead, he’ll earn $14.5M on another franchise tag.

Good post Ike. Here’s what a source said.

Bell will not be a Steeler next year.

WOW!
Lots here.

So, he turned down a 5 year/70 million dollar contract.
Only the first two years were guaranteed, at 33 million.
For those scoring at home, 33 / 2 = 16.5 million........500K less than what Le'Veon was asking for as AAV ( Average Annual Value ).
This would have taken him to age 29.
For the remaining 3 years / 37 million, we have an AAV of 12.33.
This would have taken him to age 32 but obviously not guaranteed.
Not being a homer, but I believe this was MORE than fair from the Steelers.
I firmly believe that Le'Veon will NOT see a contract over 15 million/year AAV next year when he signs with whatever team not named the Steelers next year, because unfortunately he will not be back with us.

He is an EXCEPTIONAL talent, and currently the best RB in the NFL.
But after this year, he will have played six NFL seasons.
He has already logged 1229 carries and 312 receptions ( 1541 total touches ), which breaks down to 245 carries/yr and 62 receptions/yr ( 308 total touches/yr ).
Using the averages he'll be at 1475 carries and 374 receptions for 1849 total touches after six season.
We will have received his best statistical seasons in his prime.
He will NOT get any better, but will soon decline rapidly.

Considering his two suspensions, the fact that he's only played a full 16 games once in his career, and his obvious ME FIRST attitude ( and good for him, it's a business and you got to look out for yourself ), this was for the best for Pittsburgh as a team and us as fans.
We won't soon replace his talent, but we also will not hamstring our team financially for 2 - 3 dead seasons at the end of this contract, where he would have still been making at least 4 million/yr more than the next highest paid RB ( depending on how you want to break the contract down ).

Thanks for your service, Le'Veon.
You were awesome and I hope you leave Pittsburgh passing Vince L. around.
But thank you Kevin C. and The Rooney's for being smart and not resetting the RB market to retard levels.

Todd Gurley is getting in ahead of the game. Says he just wants "like $80 million" on his next contract. They are comparing their salaries to NBA players. I think he, like Le'Veon Bell, is going to be disappointed.

http://www.businessinsider.com/todd...ba-contracts-2018-7?amp%3Butm_medium=referral

Gurley and the others can rightfully whine about the guaranteed aspect of contracts if they want.
But other than that, the numbers simply don't support their argument comparing size of contracts to other sports.......especially basketball.

2016 numbers breakdown total revenue :

NFL - 13 billion divided amongst 32 teams split 53% owners and 47% players
53 man rosters - 24 starters and 29 backups

MLB - 10 billion divided amongst 30 teams split 45% owners and 55% players
25 man rosters - 13 starters and 12 backups

NBA - 5 billion divided amongst 30 teams split 50% owners and 50% players
13 man rosters - 5 starters and 8 backups

NHL - 4 billion divided amongst 30 teams split 50% owners and 50% players
23 man rosters - 19 starters and 4 backups

While the NFL makes 4 times more than NHL, 2.5 times more than NBA, and only 3 million more than MLB
the NFL has to pay four times as many players as the NBA, and two times and many players as MLB and NHL.
An obviously bigger pie, but with way more pieces to dole out.

I meant to imply him getting booed at Heinz when he touches the ball. I know he is under scrutiny now but it will get ugly for home games, that’s actually what I meant. I do wish they could work a deal to move him prior to the season.

Bell is a unique back, excellent in the rushing, receiving, and pass blocking department. In terms of production, there are probably 7-8 other backs in the league who could produce the same or better than Bell in our offensive system. New England gets good production using 3-4 running backs each season. Bell is going to be a loss, but the running back position is one of the easier ones to replace in the NFL.

Bell’s production is mainly based on getting the ball more often than his peers. However, his yards per rush on a very talented OL with skill players and Ben to worry about is just 4.0 yards. And his yards per catch is below most other running backs. Given his age and miles, I would rather have other backs on the team, and his hefty contact of 14.5 is well beyond what his peers are making.

I never liked Me’von’s off the field stuff, lying to the fans, and me first everyone else fifteenth type of view. He’s still the same guy who can’t pick up 3rd and short or 4th and 1 when it counts.

I hope he goes to a bad team next year. He deserves the NY Jets or Cleveland Browns. One quick prediction, he won't be as good on another team. . If this wasn't a super bowl type of team, I'd be okay with Rooney pulling the deal, and letting*Mr. Selfish sit out the season. And heck yes, I'm for a trade. Until then go Samuels and Conner!

Coach, a lot here makes sense except the part of wishing bad onto someone else, player or not. Choose to root for or against but not the hope for negative in other's lives. When he leaves then he is no concern of ours. I highly doubt he will succeed where ever he goes.

Salute the nation

It is mindblowing to me that he thinks he will get a better offer than this next year after another season of heavy use, possibly an injury, etc etc. I am completely, utterly blown away. KC's offer was incredible and shows how much the organization values him. Jesus he is an idiot. I can't get over this today. I'm actually getting riled up about this

PFT speculating the Steelers could rescind the tag before Bell signs. The problem with doing that is that then he would truly be UFA and it would **** us for this season. It would give someone a player like we got in Haden last year. The question would become who can pay him the most the tightest to the start of the season.

He's going to come in and do the same **** he did last year.

I don't have high hopes for Samuels doing anything for us this year beyond occasional spot duty. Conner showed he could rip off some runs but his pass protection was garbage and he doesn't have the hands to be the check down receiver Bell is. That in and of itself is really why Le'Veon is valuing himself higher than other RBs. He can do all 3 things asked of him very well.

With Ben's window rapidly closing, we need Bell for this season and really can't afford to rescind the tag or trade him. Run him til his wheels fall off and we will take the compensatory pick in 20'.
