Steelers and Roethlisberger Finalize Two-Year Extension

Sorry if I'm not all that thrilled. Extending Ben essentially extends Tomlin as well since Ben will keep him employed.

Always better to have a franchise QB than not.

I remember before Ben the shitshow at QB.

Plus there is no guarantee that IF Ben wasn't around, Tomlin would get canned quickly.

Careful what you wish for..

I don’t like it. I would rather package a deal with Ben for draft picks. This team is rebuilding with so many needs. Realistically this team will be lucky to make the playoffs before before Bens contact is over. Add a lot of young talent now and go with Rudolph while he’s cheap.

Lucky to make the playoffs? We missed the playoffs by one gsme and had refs steal 2 from us.

Bullshit. Tomlin wasn't going anywhere for 2 years, anyway. If Tomlin is as ****** as you people think and is holding the team back, why would a competitor like Ben stay to keep playing for him?

Hahaha Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb (aka Andrew Fillaponi and Chris Mueller) on the fan say extending Ben was stupid, should've let him play this final year, then if he played well, franchise him.

Yea, a disgruntled QB is all we need, BEN will have friendly but potent contract. **** those two AZZhats.

I have no clue how any Steelers fan can't be happy about this. He's still playing at a high level, zero signs of his arm getting weak. The cap will go up the next two years as always and ABs dead money will be off the books after this season

Whatever. I’d like to see some stats on this.

I feel BB has always been underpaid and has given this team the opportunity to spend money elsewhere. He easily could have been demanding top dollar over and over but didn’t. I thought we were ****** when he seen Bert get his 100mill. Could be completely wrong, but it just felt like he was giving the Steelers fair deals

TOTALLY AGREE and those who think he is overpaid haven't seen the likes of UNI-brow etc. BEN has "hometown end" it from day one and has delivered our money's worth on every contract. THIS contract is absolutely fair as has been stated.

Same here. He's a Hall of Famer still going strong. Keep that mother as long as you can. And we know Ben is motivated by adversity and proving naysayers wrong, he's going off this season, just watch and enjoy the show.

Ben has taken more of a vocal leadership role. This extension ie earned. Now all we need is to remove Tomlin from the equation.

Yeah but.....I'm all in that he is our QB win or lose for next year but I don't see any light at the end of the 2020 tunnel. I hope I am wrong but IMHO Ben has been slowly losing ground to the inevitable curse of age and NFL attrition. Whatever the extension says is what it is, all we can do is keep our fingers crossed that he survives intact. Maybe he has another gear in his game and he can produce to expectations but common sense dictates that the end of the road is in site.

All I am sayin' is fingers crossed and cover our *** just in case. 50*50

Be nice to see him go out with a bang though.

Regardless of whether Tomlin wasn't going anywhere, please enlighten me on the specific attributes he exhibits that make him an excellent - or even above average coach - preparation for games, especially against bad teams; player development; gameday adjustments; challenges; team discipline.

The QB is about 60-70% of what is needed to win a championship in today's NFL. If a team has one, they have a shot.

The Steelers have some weaknesses, but no more than most of the other teams expected to contend in 2019.

You mean like last year?

ummmmm,
money
he likes it here
his family
his team mates
he gets to pick his OCs
he gets to do what he wants without being held accountable
tomlin gives him days off
the gm says hes the greatest and all his 'kids' should follow his lead
maybe ben is like a lot of tomlin fans and is happy with .500

there are plenty of competitors in the nfl and they still choose to play for the lions, browns, raiders, bucs, jets etc etc etc

...BEN will have friendly but potent contract. ...

This contract is as smartly structured as the AB trade was a debacle. When you consider the dynamics - the RW/$140M/$35Myr bar that was set, Ben's age, Rudolph coming up - you couldn't have put together a better deal. He got an extension worth $34M/yr w/$30M injury guaranteed on top of the $37.5 SB - that's essentially guaranteeing the total of the extension. Ben takes in $49.5M ($12M salary / SB) in 19. He gets $15M+ the two remaining years - average $26.66 over 3 years. Ben isn't going to get better than that except a longer term deal. So Ben gets to say 'I got RW money' and the Steelers are paying him manageable salaries in each of the 3 years. If Ben is 'done' in 2 or 3 years, just let him retire. If he still has the drive, extend him. The only risk is Rudolph walking, but they deal with that year by year. Well done both sides.

Nice points, Vincent. The only downfall to this that I see is Ben's new contract runs through when Rudolph's will be up. Will we get to see Rudolph in any meaningful game barring injury to Ben?

YES, I don't think BEN plays out the contract. He retires after this year's SB win and if not then after our second SB win next year. I don't think he will go for three straight................. RUDOLF will have to get his first his first year as a starter.....................................

Why, you wouldn't listen.

It is obvious that Ben thinks so, yes?

He's a competitor. He wants to win. He would get a **** ton of money anywhere. Yet, he chooses a coach that is holding him back from winning? Pull the other one, it's got bells on.

They co-terminate. Its a beautiful symmetry.

Hes a competitor. It just raises the bar playing for cool shades.

Imagine wanting to get rid of one of the most fun QBs to watch in the history of the game for Mason Rudolph. Get out of here with that and enjoy the remainder of Ben's career. He's a special player and I'm glad he's in Pittsburgh.

Boom goes the dynamite!

I punched the wall when the Steelers drafted Lawrence Timmons.

That was the moment I decided I was too emotionally invested in stupid stuff.

But still. Lawrence Timmons!!!! Really??? Unbelievable.
