Steelers and Cam Heyward Contract Extension

Usually that is the Steelers norm to back load and give a decent signing bonus. With next year to due a possible dip in the cap they could do two friendly years then spread the rest over the duration of his contract. And yeah we know he won't see those years on the tail end of the contract. As I say over and over again Steelers will make it work as long as Ben is under center. They have shown the capability to do a plethora of contracts at once. Every year fans are worried about this and that contract and here they go showing once again it is business as usual. This team knows how to manipulate the cap. They already have a plan in place for next year. Count on it. Remember nobody outside of Watt and Mink will demand top money. And if one does they can simply draft and bring in a replacement. One can debate they already have a potential Juju replacement. With Conner's injury past he shouldn't command a lot. One downfall is Bud on a normal year they should be able to retain him he is the one I can see getting away due to the unusual circumstance.

Unfortunately, that will be a lot of dead money if the first 2 years are cap friendly and he doesn't make it through the contract. The next couple of years might be very painful.

The Championship window is this year and next at best and that is all riding on Ben's surgically repaired elbow. I feel like they appeased a team leader to help put the chips in this year and didn't give a **** about the future. And my question remains "Where was this mentality when Cowher was around".

Quoted for the truth. Smoke and mirrors are smoke and mirrors. Lets not forget that this team had to give up Hargrave a young player that would normally fit into long range plan and will almost certainly give up Juju, who would certainly normally be in their long term plans.

This needed to get done. It was the right thing. Cam is an elite talent. The back half of the contract will be a rebuilding team without Ben on it (likely, anyway) and I’m sure the guarantees are front loaded. Don’t sweat the amount. They’re taking care of their own and will figure out the cap down the line like they always do

Might be a painful time. But that time IMO comes post Ben.

Some rumblings the Steelers will extend Ben if he wants to resign. That one two year window might be longer than a few think.

Sure if Ben folds this year. Otherwise I don't see it.

next year Ben is a 41M dollar cap hit. Sure, they can do some sort of extension, but you still push a great deal of money into the future. I assume the team had some sort of plan in place even if we don't know what it is. Alas, most plans are on hold till the end of this year and the new cap figure is worked out. I still think the NFLPA and NFL will negotiate something to keep the cap number higher but offset losses to later years. It makes no sense for the players or teams to have a bunch of vets in prime hitting the market due to cap cuts and then have those vets struggle to find teams due to cap. FA market values would go way down for high talent. Players, if smart, will not want that. Owners should not want that either. Yea, a few teams pick up some nice players on the low-low, but a lot of teams will be shoved into rebuild mode. Who knows, maybe the NFL wants that type of disruption.

Will be interesting how the cap unfolds but if they want a clue how to manage it they should get with the Steelers!:spit2:

that's as low a signing bonus as you will find around the league for a 60M+ multi year contract. They definitely didn't tie themselves for the latter part of the contract, quite friendly actually for a future cut in the final 2/3 years

new management? I don't know, why dwelve now in the past if no one can change it? At least they are doing what's needed right now to win, and as I said in another post if what was reported was correct, the signing bonus is quite small, less than 30% of the contract value so the Steelers are not hanging themselves in the future with this extension

If Ben is extended lets be clear about something. It won't be to extend a championship window. It will be to smooth the cap hit next year to make up for this kinda ****. More robbing Peter to Pay Paul.

I disagree as long as he is under center and healthy he extends that championship window.

I bet this extension wouldn't have happened if they didn't see Ben fully healthy and at a high level. If they saw his skills diminishing they wouldn't extend a 31 years old vet, they see a window definitely and is at the very least a 2 years one.

No one who has played 15 years of NFL football is healthy. They might be able to cobble something together this year because he only has to be good not great. Beyond this year gets pretty damn tough.

I dunno this year might be tough, three years might be tough nobody knows as Ben's injury in itself is on uncharted waters. Any player who reaches a certain age it gets to be a wait and see too. Unfortunately that is where we are at and we can just hope for the best. Doesn't necessarily shrink that window. His arm will ultimately be that decide.

Sorry SteelerSask, you're giving BEN ROETHLISBERGER zero credit. You don't know physically or mentally how he will perform and how strong his arm is todaY OR FUTURE. I myself see them extending the window because I see BEN fully capable and extending his window to this year + two more.

I realize they are investing a lot into the here and now but that's how a cxhampionship window should work. I also KNOW they have a p[lan that is unforeseen led by us as we are NOT involved in the day to day performance of the talent. We have not a clue to player projected distance they have yet in them and I'd think the front office has a pretty good handle on that.

I think the contract whether “good” or “bad” isn’t the win here.

It’s the type of thing Dan Rooney would do — like he did with Ward
& regretted not doing with Harris & Woodson.

Step in with & earning trust of players. That’s been “Steelers way”
