Someone explain to me how you pay 10 million per year for a guy at 26 with a ton of football in front of him and now you pay 17 per year for a guy who 31 and his best is behind him. Like wtf are they doing. They are going to **** themselves on Watt or Fitzpatrick. This is stupid.

will be interesting to see how it is structured - singing bonus and guarantees will be the key.

To what? Do you honestly believe he signed some team friendly first two years dump me cheap contract. All I'm gonna say is if they would have spent money like this when Cowher coached this team they would have at least 7 now. They should have let him play out the year and made a decision in the end. They still could have used the franchise if they had too. The truth is they will be lucky to get two productive healthy seasons from him.

Not a fan of the amt. No way in hell Cam gets this dollar amt on the open market. I like Cam, but good Lord..

Oh well. Is what it is, hope he maintains a VERY high level of play for the great majority of the deal

I'd have to think this year's salary is turned into the signing bonus, next year's salary should be a roster bonus. That's the most cap friendly way to do this.

Yeah but would you say that to his face ?

I hope it is cap friendly on the back half. I doubt he sees the last 2 years of the deal playing anywhere near what he is now. I hope he does but he will be in his mid-30's. We knew this is what they wanted. Need to hope our next No.1 RB and No. 1 WR step up this season because we aren't signing anyone else next year with the cap going down.

Usually that is the Steelers norm to back load and give a decent signing bonus. With next year to due a possible dip in the cap they could do two friendly years then spread the rest over the duration of his contract. And yeah we know he won't see those years on the tail end of the contract. As I say over and over again Steelers will make it work as long as Ben is under center. They have shown the capability to do a plethora of contracts at once. Every year fans are worried about this and that contract and here they go showing once again it is business as usual. This team knows how to manipulate the cap. They already have a plan in place for next year. Count on it. Remember nobody outside of Watt and Mink will demand top money. And if one does they can simply draft and bring in a replacement. One can debate they already have a potential Juju replacement. With Conner's injury past he shouldn't command a lot. One downfall is Bud on a normal year they should be able to retain him he is the one I can see getting away due to the unusual circumstance.

1. Heyward has played better each year as he’s aged. At some point that’ll stop, but he’s a top-3 interior lineman in the NFL right now. Truly elite.

2. I bet they sign them both.

Yeah they won't be letting those two talents go anytime soon.

But there has to be a cost. All the Steelers are is your neighbor who has a better house than you and at least on the surface makes about the same and suddenly there is a 100k boat in his driveway. It ain't ****** magic boys. You never pay for what a guy has done. Without injury (lwhich is a big if)I'd expect Heyward to put up similar numbers the next two years. Then it gets real murky. The Steelers were in a very precarious cap position prior to this contract. You cant keep robbing peter to pay Paul. It just doesn't work.

They will rob Peter until Paul Roethlisberger hangs em up. Then it will be time to rebuild anyways.

It will be worse than that. They will will pay Paul Roethlisberger probably 15 million a year to not play football when they extend his contract one more time. I know you think this creative book keeping is good Slash, but they paid AB what 20 plus million to not play because they backed up his contract like they did. You are right. They will keep doing this for as long as Ben is around. But when he is gone it will slow the rebuild immeasurably. and they will pay for his cap ghost for probably two years too.

I think it is necessary to keep the championship window open as long as possible. I have seen ****** teams bottom out and then rebuild fairly quickly. The Steelers FO deserves a little bit of faith based on past history. It is pure conjecture on our part on how long it will take obviously, but that time period for me will be more about the QB under center postBen than any financial shortcomings. We will continue to go as our QB goes for better or worse.

i don't know what he took or how easy it wil be to void in later years or when the heavy part of the cap hit will come. That is the point.
