The 2021 NFL Draft is 30 days away and the Pittsburgh Steelers are set to pick 24th overall.

I polled some of the staff here at SteelerNation.com to get an idea of who we all think could be available and selected at #24 for Kevin Colbert, Mike Tomlin and co.

Although there is a clear favorite among the writers, some of the selections may be a bit more surprising.

Justin McGonigle led the way with the most popular pick of this mock first round pick.

RB Travis Etienne (Clemson)

McGonigle’s analysis: While most Steelers fans want Najee Harris, McGonigle believes that the Steelers want Etienne’s skill set to pair with Matt Canada‘s new offense.

CJ Lester was right behind McGonigle and thinks Etienne is the right pick at #24.

Lester’s analysis: “As much as I would love to go offensive line with this pick, Etienne is too dynamic to pass on if he is there. He instantly makes the Steelers’ offense better. He’s a complete back that any offense can lean on in the rushing attack or the passing game! He would take a lot of the pressure away from Ben Roethlisberger and the passing game.”

Jobe Morrison agreed with McGonigle and Lester and took Etienne as well. Morrison described his reasoning in depth.

Morrison’s analysis: “There is room to trade back to 28-30 and get some draft capital, however, I am a big fan of Etienne at this pick. He is a productive player who is very versatile. A playmaker in the backfield is very important. Canada will have too many weapons to use at his disposal — a nice problem to have.”

Ben Michaelian and Sean McGeown were the last writers on the Etienne train.

Michaelian’s analysis: “Colbert and Tomlin met with Etienne which is a big indicator that they’re very interested. Etienne would be a great addition to the Canada scheme and also complement Benny Snell Jr.; speed vs. strength.”

McGeown’s analysis: “Etienne has size, speed and agility. He has a lot of comparisons to Alvin Kamara, who is the kind of player that would be perfect in Canada’s offense to keep defenses off balance. Steelers get their running back of the future at #24.”

Mike Stiffler was thinking offensive weaponry too, but went with a different playmaker than McGonigle, Lester, Morrison, Michaelian and McGeown.

RB Najee Harris (Alabama)

Stiffler analysis: “The Steelers QB of the future is very much an unknown, so why not center the offense around Harris until that becomes clear. He’s a complete back; power, speed hands and he’s a freak at 6’3, 230+ pounds. He can come in Day 1 and be someone defenders key in on, something they do not currently have on the roster.”

Jonathan Clark could not have agreed more with Stiffler on the selection.

Clark’s analysis: “As much as it hurts me to not go offensive line here, this year’s draft is a deep one at that particular position. Th Steelers might be able to grab one of those prospects in the second or third rounds. Harris is the dynamic running back the Steelers have been missing and he can be that guy who can take pressure off of the passing game and an aging Ben Roethlisberger. If Harris falls to the Steelers at #24, he has to be considered for a team in “win now” mode.

*It is important to note that Etienne or Harris would be the first skill player selected in the first round for the Steelers since Rashard Mendenhall in 2008.

G Stryker wandered away from the offensive side of the ball and added a new name to the mix for possible selections in the first round:

CB Jacyee Horn (University of South Carolina)

Stryker’s analysis: “Right now with Steve Nelson leaving, the biggest position of need is at cornerback. If Horn is available at #24, he is my top target.”

Matt Papiernik stayed in the secondary too, but went in a different direction.

CB Asante Samuel Jr. (Florida State University)

Papiernik’s Analysis: “Samuel Jr. is a physical corner who has the versatility to play both in the slot and on the outside. He excels in man coverage, which bodes well for the Steelers defense that ran man coverage the majority of time in 2020.”

Last is my least exciting, but very crucial possible addition to this Steelers team.

OT Samuel Cosmi (Texas)

My analysis: It is no secret that the Steelers offensive line struggled down the stretch in the 2020 season. Cosmi is a big-bodied, versatile offensive tackle who could start immediately protecting Roethlisberger’s (and the quarterback of the future) blind side. This is a very deep offensive line draft, but if Cosmi is available at #24, I don’t see how the Steelers can pass up on him. He could be a staple for years to come in Pittsburgh.

Who would you take at #24, #SteelerNation? Did any of us get it right? Let us know in the comments below!

If Cos is there I don't see how he isn't BPA. Not sure that would stop the Steelers from taking ET9. Who they probably see as a perfect fit for Canada.

No way do I take a RB in round 1 unless it’s Harris, and even then I probably wouldn’t pick him this year with all the holes to fill. Etienne would be a nice add as well, but the Steelers have too many positions of need to go with a RB that will fail because the OL is a train wreck. Too many other holes.

Williams is arguably the best of the three.

I would take Harris or Etienne in Rd. 1 if they are there. I'd then trade up in rd 2 to get the best OL possible even if it costs us our No. 3 next year. Or, vice versa. Go OL in 1 and trade up in 2 if Harris or Etienne are there. If we go OL in 1 and Harris and Etienne go quickly, we need to trade up to get the NC RB. It's a must for us to get a starting RB and that will only happen in Rd. 1 or 2 this year. We can't rely on Snell or McFarland.

Trade back and take Williams, guys gonna be a stud

Gonna do an analysis in the mode of our board's greatest talent scout:

"No way do I want to see them take Etienne at 1:24. He favors Kordell Stewart in looks and his head is way to big to succeed."

Btw, I wouldn't be upset with any of the top 3 RBs in the first round. Although I'm liking what I'm hearing about Williams the most. Just seems like a good fit for Canada's offense with his blend of size, speed and agility.
I'd be more than happy to see them take Zaven Collins ILB/Duke in the first.

Coach is to stupid to take RB in the first. He would take a punter. He knows, he even predicted it.

if most of those players are available I'd look to trade down a few spots and pick whoever is left, either way you are taking a top talent home

Definitely need a RB but don't look past LT either. Williams rnd 2 ?

Salute the nation

I haven’t studied enough about the RBs to make an educated guess.

But we need a playmaker at RB. I thought it last year when we took Chase Claypool. Naturally I was glad we took Claypool the more I learned about him.

Nonetheless, I want the best RB we can get for Ben’s final run. Someone who can make a big play out of a broken play. Even though those RBs can be found in round 2 & even 3—get the best possible running game to compliment Ben & keep the other’s teams offense off the field & our defense playing vs. teams that have been forced into one-dimensional game.

I'm torn here. I dont really know if the issue with the Offensive line was the play design, ****** coaching, or both. I have faith that Canada can fix the blocking schemes in the play designs but can Klemm really fix the ****** technique on the line? Can he really coach a rookie to succeed at the next level?

Do we draft a RB and cross our fingers that Canada/Klemm can fix the running game?

Do we draft an OL and cross our fingers that Klemm can coach the guy into a starting role right away?

This is going to be interesting.

Take a premium LT in a draft that is fortunately deep in the position. My concern is that the 2022 draft will not have a quality guy, a plug-and-play type, there at 15 when the Steelers are probably drafting so they take a RB at 24, give away 2021 because they have so many holes and no cap room, then win just enough to wind up in the middle of the pack in the draft next year with no chance at a quality LT.

A great RB makes a bad offensive line look a lot better, but a terrible offensive line - and the current group is terrible in the running game people - will make a great running back look average.
