Sports Illustrated Peter King's take on the game

Huh?

How can you know if he's "playing at a high level" by June 1st? That's more than two months away from the start of the season.

There is a veteran free agent corner that had a good year we could sign. Might get him cheap as his last game he made a couple undisciplined mistakes. Can even return kick offs. Mentor our younger guys with his great attitude .Packman Fever!

Ducks head.....runs from room.

Sarcasm Alert!

spending a high pick on a TE is crazy. I could see doing it if there was a great prospect, a special athlete, but there won't be in this draft. You also have to consider what the steelers need from the TE. They need a blocker, not a receiver.

Imagine if Jimmy Graham was magically on the Steelers. What option is he in the passing game? No higher than 3rd behind AB and Martavis. I could also argue i'd rather throw to Bell and possibly Coates by next year.

Heath Miller is just a checkdown option as he should be. The Steeler offense was much different when they spent a first rounder on Heath. They were a run first team. Also, you used to need a TE to go across the middle back when LBs and DBs were allowed to hit people. Now you can send a small WR across the middle.

Jesse James is a solid blocker and he is athletic enough to handle all the receiving needed out of the Steeler TEs. He was only 20 when he was drafted. He will get better. Heath is slowing but he has years left. They can add a TE late but using a top pick on a TE would be overkill.

Besides, they can use Villanueva as a blocking TE if they re-sign Beachum. He has played it before. They used to use Starks as a TE before he won a starting job.

That's a good read. I disagree about Peezy though and also about drafting a tight end. I still say our big need in the next draft is a big physical fast corner to shore up the secondary.

Im not sure we will draft a TE.....perhaps bring someone over via FA. I think that theres a strong possibility that Heath becomes a cap casualty, if he doesn't retire. I wouldn't like it but it could be a cap-saving move.

We will have to wait on James but I cant be certain he retires...especially if Ben talks him into one more run. Remember, he promised to give Jerome that last shot and delivered on his promise. There might be a couple names in FA that we may be able to snag. Nick Perry in GB is one id take a look at. Bruce Irvin of Seattle is another.

As for secondary, Janoris Jenkins of the Rams is unrestricted.....but I think the Rams lock him up. But if I can dream, id go hard after Josh Norman.........lockdown corner of our dreams right ?

But I think our plan is gonna be defensive BPA in the 1st round

I'm sorry, but our team does not dump productive players that have shown they still can play. Miller has reworked his contract each and every year the Steelers have asked him to. The Steelers are loyal to Miller, and he is loyal to them. They could do a new 2year contract and drop the 7mil cap hit to the 4-5mil range. You want to see a dump that is both practical and economical? Cortez Allen if cut after June 1st, saves $4.4M (Including $1.35M Dead Money). That's our rookie salary pool right there.

Suisham is gone. Sorry, he doesn't make financial sense and he's a question mark with his knee injury. Post June 1: $1.1M Dead $2.4M Cap savings.

Here's some restructures/ new contracts that can save us this year:
Timmons $15M can drop to the $8-$10mil range with a new contract
Brown $12.3M can drop to $8-$10M with a restructure.
Decastro $8M can drop to $5M with a new contract.
Spaeth can save $1M
Landry and Shamarko $675 each

That can be $25M-$19M in savings with the proper capology. We are not hurting next year.

The time to get a TE was 2013, when Jarvis Jones and Tyler Eifert were both on the board at draft pick #17!

Nevermind: I guess I should have read past page 1 before posting this.

Nearly the entire board was wanting and expecting Eifert. Me included...

What is everyone's thought on Dwayne Allen outta Indianapolis? I believe he's coming off an injury but I've read some positive things regarding him being a decent tight end in the future.
