Special teams, a weakness so far?

Balls are the same size, if you would read carefully, I never said they weren’t. The materials are different and that’s what important. The grain pattern is different and ball is slightly heavier.

What was Ryan’s contract worth at Seattle? 1.7? What makes you think he would accept a contract amount that’s less than Berry’s cap hit (which is 1.9 tender). Ryan is vet of over 10 years.

Hey if they sign better punter that’s cheaper and consistent I’m all for it. But get your head out of the sand regarding net avg. as the be all for punter reviews. If you understood the position itself, that’s only a piece of the position evaluation. Hang time, directional and touch backs are just as or even more important in today’s NFL.

A few things.

1 ) Exactly how much more are you saying the NFL football weighs? Are we talking less and an ounce here? Please explain.

2 ) The long snappers and kick coverage people aren't as good in college, meaning the net in college can be worse than the same punter's net in the NFL.

I understand the position Ike, Berry lacks in consistency, sometimes hang time and distance. He's below average in Net, partly because he kicks them either too low and with not enough hang time for the coverage people to get there. When we are backed up, he can seldom punt us out of trouble.

I checked on Ryan's cap number in 2018. It's 1.6 million, .3 million less than Berry's. However now that he has been cut, he'll be looking for a new job, and could probably be signed for far less than 1.9M. He would upgrade us.

1. I said there is little difference. Duke ball is only leather, CFB uses a leather and composite type. They are no difference length/diameter wise and both use 13-14 psi. The weight of the materials are around 14-15 oz. Players have said the pro ball “feels” a little heavier. It may be placebo generated, but it’s been reported.

2. Or it could mean the net is exaggerated because the coverage and fielding teams are worse. I’ve seen college punters punt 70 yards have a huge distance avg, but net is predicated on the coverage units...which are no where near as fast as in the pros.

3. Ryan was in a year 2 of a contract of 10 million. His prior contract with the Hags he earned just under 10 mil. He was cut with 2 years left with a cap hit at 1.6, but his actual salary was 2.5 (from bonus) His remaining contract will cause Seattle to have over 1.2 mil in dead money in the next two years.

He is a 10+ year vet. He has a bottom floor of signing minimum. He just lost over 1.2 mil, he will want to make it up.

You keep focusing on net yards as the dominant factor in punting. It isn’t, not any more. You say Berry does this and that...the peripheral numbers of IS20>TB or directional confidence have been solid.

Personally I would use the 4+ million available to rather sign another ILB rather than sign a punter with 10 yards better net. But we know you want just to peacock on a 5th round kicker.

Yes, that 5th round punter I think is something special. He already sent a good veteran packing. I think he has pro bowl ability. Where is our 5th round pick? Likely getting cut.

I'm with you on LB, too bad we didn't draft any or sign better in free agency.

Berry is tier 3, and overpaid. He's below average in many areas, not just Net average or average. We can get cheaper and better, so I say do it.

Try a 1.8 net difference, and 6 TBs instead of 2. Great use of funds...

5th round punter is something special? Pro Bowl material? After 6 punts, none of which count?

A special punter is Ray Guy. Not some 5th round pick who hasn’t done anything live yet. But if you want to pat yourself on the back for calling a punter out feel free.

Now we know you don’t understand the game like you think you do. Berry was given a tender for his position as a RFA. It’s what the league considers a player of his level is required to “at least” be offered.

You comparing 5th rounders irrespective of their positions?

One word......idiocy.
