So for the most part we all think Bell shows up the week before the 1st regular season game. After all, that’s exactly what happened last season. Even the opponent is the same and did I mention that the game is even going to be played in Cleveland? So logical conclusion would be to expect Lev Bell to repeat the same steps as year last.
Wait one minute though. Last season Lev Bell thought he’d have another shot at a new contract and probably felt confidant that they would get something done. He even said as much in the off season. He knew he would get tagged again if by chance there would be no new contract.
Now the mindset in his camp and across the NFL is that 2018 is the last season in black n gold.
Consider now that there has been no reported contact made between Bell and the Steelers brass and no even with the players according to Pouncey which he said is different from last season.
So what if Bell who I believe has until game 10 to report decides to challenge the Steelers here? Possibly thinking of forcing the team to rescind the tag thus making him an unrestricted free agent able to sign with whomever and for whatever he desires.
Bell cashes in a season early and sticks it to the Steelers.
What’s the worst that can happen? The team calls his bluff and keeps the tag and he reports for game 10. Yeah what about the money he gives up? He does leave around 8 million on the table but with 7 games in uniform he still brings down close to 7 million. It’s not like this cat’s going to be on unemployment. He made12.5 million last year.
This way he comes in game 10, reduces about 250 touches he normally would have had, reduced risk of injury by 9 games missed, and feels like he’s stuck it to the team and he wins after all. This from a guy whose mindset is me first then the team.
I think this is a possibility and would not be surprised at all.
