Steelers safety Mike Mitchell made an exit during Sunday’s win over the Colts on Sunday with an apparent ankle injury. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, it’s not his ankle — and it’s not a new injury.

The source says Mitchell has been playing for the past few weeks with a Grade 1 strain of the soleus muscle.

That’s one of the muscles in the lower leg, below the calf and above the ankle. He technically has been listed as having an injury of the Achilles tendon, which is close enough to the soleus muscle to count, I guess.

The bottom line is that Mitchell may be able to return on Thursday night against the Titans, unless the injury has been sufficiently aggravated.

I wonder why Golden is getting touches still with Wilcox on the team.............

I never want to see anyone get hurt, but when I saw Mike Mitchell carted off my first thought was "this is the only way he'll get replaced". In my humble opinion, Mitchell is a liability and < Wilcox.

Mike, take your time coming back. In fact, let that thing rest for about 12-13 weeks.

Sit him on a short week, if he plays that's a dumb decision, a strained muscle will only get worse

Not like he is a superstar and that much better than the next guy even nursing a injury.

He is a fringe player, I also would rather give a healthy body a look.

Steelers' plan for Joe Haden's injury: Wait, and play Coty Sensabaugh

Sensabaugh was originally brought in pre-Haden to compete with Ross Cockrell for the other starting job opposite Artie Burns. Now he’ll get his chance against the team that drafted him in 2012. The circumstances aren’t what anyone expected, particularly because of how good Haden has been, but Tomlin doesn’t sound concerned.

“We’ll do a great job of rallying around Coty and helping him prepare and look forward to him doing the job,” Tomlin said at his weekly press conference.

I agree on Wilcox over Golden. Earlier this year when Wilcox did get in games, he looked decent and he is aggressive, a lot like Mitchell. He hits! I have no idea why he stopped getting in games when he seemed to be looking good when he did see game action.

They must have some issue with Wilcox. Golden has been taking reps with the first team and obviously playing when Mitchell comes out.

Mike Mitchell is a piece of trash. He made a bunch of money off of the Panthers' front 7 and has, for some reason, fooled the Steelers into thinking he's worth it. He is a missed tackle, bad angle, out of position, loudmouth fuckup and I while I don't wish injury on anyone, I hope he's hurting.

When your FS is a 9 year veteran and mostly ends up in the wrong coverage area or is late getting to the correct one he is a liability. Start Wilcox and leave him in there unless he ***** the bed.

Mitchell should not be starting even if healthy.
The guy seems to be out of position more so than not, does indeed take poor angles, missed tackles, continually gets flagged for late and cheap hits and the celebrations are a joke.
Never liked the signing and yes to the poster who said he fooled The team.
Wilcox seemed like a better fit to me.

Mitchell is a good player, but this year he is playing hurt. You can see it in his play. He's trying to read QB eyes instead of watching his responsibilities in deep halves, thirds or quarters. He can't make up ground because he's injured and is playing slow. He's not coming up and making big hits, because his injuries aren't allowing him to time plays let alone make any.

He needs to sit for a month to get his leg back to 100% because this 75% bullshit will not cut it in this league.

I don't get what they see in him. Maybe I'm blind but I don't remember the last time he made a play.

Mitchell is ***. I'm sure he can cover the run pretty well, but he is late to the party on deep throws a hell of a lot.

I agree with this. this feels like Boykin all over again. guy is making plays, but never see the field. nobody could understand why.

When the Wizard of Boz missed a field goal at 6:41 of the fourth quarter, I was shocked, as were most of the sideline. This guy just doesn’t miss, but the scoreboard said he did. Chris Boswell walked by with a slightly “far off” look in his eyes, like he couldn’t believe it either. Mitchell, who was sitting on a table with his ankle wrapped in ice, leaped off the table to literally hop his way over to Boz. I love seeing teammates be great teammates in moments such as this. Mitch had a few words to share. Though I have no idea what was said, moments and words in times like that are forever remembered.

Mitchell has been pretty bad this season. Let him sit, play Wilcox or Golden.
