to break the great Dutchman's record? He needed 35 yards passing to tie and 36 to set a new record. They were ahead by 17 with 2-1/2 minutes left, do you give your franchise QB the chance to break it? You gotta know that given the opportunity, stat queen Manning would have been given the chance, so why not Ben?

The Dutchman 557 yards
Ben 522 yards

He had his chances. He missed AB for an 86 yard TD early in the game. I think if Bell doesn't get big gainers and keeps moving the chains they let him throw but it is hard to call a passing play when Bell kept scamping off for 5-12 at a time. On that 4th down I would have let him throw it though.

No. He could have gotten hurt. In fact it got chippy at the end when he ran the ball before the punt, I believe.

He's going to the HOF. At present, he's the only QB to pass for 500+ yards in more than one game plus two SB victories and he's fourth on the list w/ 100 wins before 150 games. Good enough for me...

A Bryant drop I think in the 3rd Q and the DHB fumble robbed two drives where Ben would have made up those yards. The Bryant drop was a catch and run. Would have easily been a 15-20 yard reception. In that case Ben would have got the go ahead to get the record. They can't say they weren't aware of his total yardage when they threw some bullshit pass to AB a few weeks back to extend his streak.

No. It wouldn't have been cool if he got hurt trying to do it. Also, any record that comes from padded stats is tainted in my book.

They ran a play to keep Brown's relatively meaningless record in tact, they should have let Ben go for an actual historic record.

I'm not sure whichrich side of the fence I'm on, but I heard some where today from local pittsburgh media that the coaches they asked about this, said they were not aware Ben was close to any records. Yeah right, but they knew about Brown's meaningless Five for Fifty???

I'm not so sure Ben even cares about that. Considering the score I'd rather they do what they did and not try it.

Records, when they occur organically, are awesome. When manufactured, they suck.

Aren't you the purist? Most broken records come from padded play. How do you think that record occurred? We didn't need all 522yards to win, so whats another 35-40? He could get hurt on any given play or jumping MaMa in the kitchen. Play ball, go for the gusto, enjoy the ride!!!

The only problem with this is that if Bryant makes that catch, it changes the make up of the game. How much? We'll Never know. But it's like the butterfly effect.

Yeah, rub it in against a dangerous team we may have to play in January. No threat of that against the Jags. Brown's record required a little swing pass. More yards for Ben meant throwing it down the field. The same people calling for this would be on here having a stroke if this was done against us.

It wouldn't have ben

pawz

any worse than the ill advised scamper late in the game that almost got him killed

I could care less about any record. Just get me the win and go home. I don't care if we win 2-0 or 58-3. That said, Ben's performance was pretty awesome on Sunday and it would have Ben cool if he had a record to show for it. Sure did remind me of the GB game a few years ago when he had over 500 yards.

My guess is that if he had broken the record and then later on say, Brady and Belicheck, had the opportunity and broke Bens record by putting on a clinic in garbage time, you'd suddenly become a purist.

Breaking the record would have been nice but I think the best thing was getting the win and staying focused on that. It is easier to keep track of something like 5 catches per game or not than how many yards are the most in a game. Also we have seen how quickly leads can disappear with some bad luck or a great play by a defender. We saw a play in the game that had I think Brown tip a pass up in the air and it was nearly intercepted. The Steelers put up over 20 points in less than 2 minutes because of taking advantage of mistakes by another team very recently. I think they played it very well, simply because had they lost the game the season could have been effectively over.

A record is the result of the performance during a game. It is not the benchmark, nor is it the intended destination.

Would have been cool to see Norm Van Brocklin set the record vs that scrub team that was out of the league the following year.

I mentioned this in another thread, I wanted to see Ben get the record. I was rooting for a turn over and when they did get it and ran the ball you would have thought the Steelers lost the way I reacted. lol! If they didn't go for the record they should have at least broke the tie, jmo. Anyways as Steeler fans we all have seen some great things but to have a chance to see a Steeler QB break the single game passing record being known as a "running" team would have been special in my eyes. Either way it was fun to watch this offense do what it did Sunday, I know that might not ever happen again but here is to trying........
