The problem is rewarding pedigree over performance. We need players not picks.

I think you are somewhat right.

Thomas and Jones really have no business starting.

and the D will settle when both are benched IMO.

Not sure either can emerge as I think both have had enough time to show or not show something.....................

Replacing them doesn't stop us from playing 8 to 10 yards off EVERY WR, TE and RB going out for a pass. This team is so ******* passive that it is sickening.
 
Watching Seattle and San Diego. You are better off with a great D than a great O. Seattle had like 7 first downs and lead at half by 4.

Seattle can get away with murder on Defense... we would be flagged every play. Carrol must have something on goodell...
 
Why is Boykin, arguably their best corner, not starting? They are pretending Cortez Allen is good.

just watched the first half and I am not as worried as some chicken littles on here. I never expected us to be great on defense out of the gate and I think our offense will be able to keep up after the first two games. Deangelo even gives me hope for those. I have to hope Coates steeps up during Bryants suspension and gets valuable experience giving us the best receiver group in the league. Saftey seems to be the ?. I will be mre worried about the defense when we see them for a whole game and with a full gameplan. Until then I am not going to lose my mind.
 
A whole game with this starting D could be record setting. Huge passing yards and high scores are in our future...
 
Our Defense is gonna suck ***....Cover 2 is a joke....someone needs to tell Tomlin...

I watched that Bills game in horror as four scrubb QB's who couldn't start in this league tore up our Steelers Defense for 551 yards total offense and 395 through the air with only 3 count em three incompletions. Is Tomlin off his rocker to goto a Cover 2/ Tampa 2 Defense?

Clearly, Cover 2 was great 10-15 years ago but it is dead in today's NFL and this idiot and trying to implement a system that has long been exploited and exposed by every NFL team.

Help me understand this folks?

Cover 2 is exploited by spread formations and high powered passing games which is exactly what today's NFL has become. Cover 2 has a static back seven defenders and holes in the zones. Today we saw the Bills exploit it to perfection by throwing deep-intermediate routes above the corners and in front of the safeties and the seams beyond the linebackers in front of the safeties.

Cover 2 worked when the typical offense used 2 to 3 WR sets....now most NFL offenses go 4 or 5 wide creating nightmare matchups for a Cover 2/ Tampa 2 Defense. This paves the way for quick three step drops nullifying the pass rush and having a solid pass rush is key for a Cover 2 Defense.....WTF is Tomlin thinking?

Playing a static zone Cover 2 in today's NFL is a recipe for disaster and as we saw today even a journeymen NFL QB with minimal talent can pick apart a cover two when you spread em out. Combine this is zero pass rush from the Steelers front four and you have what could be the worst Steelers Defense since the pre-Noll era and I'm not kidding.

And I really don't think the Steelers have the talent, speed and athleticism at the Safety position to compensate for a piss poor pass rush!

What are all of your thoughts?

I honestly think this will be the worst Steelers Defense in 50 years! And it's not even close folks! BANK ON IT!

They were in a Cover 2 on Jackson's 41yd run the first play from scrimmage and they were in Cover 2 on Clay's 67yd TD and they were in Cover 2 for most of the game. Cover 2 is a joke! So easy to exploit with today's pass happy NFL. Any QB will torch this Steelers cover two.....partly because of scheme and partly because they just don't have the pass rush or the athletic safeties needed to make it effective. Our safeties are a complete joke!

I think someone said the Steelers won't need to score 30 ppg they will need 40 ppg. I wouldn't necessarily disagree with that statement at this point in time. They look dreadful!

146.8 was the QB rating for 4 QB's combined....EJ Manuel, Matt Cassel, Tyrod Taylor & Matt "*******" Simms.....30 for 33 395 yds & 3 TD's.
 
Ya worst defense I've seen ever in the black and gold you have to go back to Huey Richardson but that d had some great guys. There is no one in the secondary that can start on another team. Maybe not make another team. They are drafting " bonus" picks like dri dumbass when the secondary is sucking I don't get it. Shazier looks good on some plays but completely looks out of position. Jarvis jones, shamarko Thomas, complete busts. Vince Williams Sean spence and the rest completely underwhelming and would be worried about getting cut this time of year on any other team. And the coaching... Completely horrible. It's the coaches job to put players in a position to make plays this staff doesn't. They are reading from a script that's outdated and played out. The " hybrid" defense is so horrible it could allow record numbers to be put up on us. The worst is its so played out that when we play the cheatroits they will know our plays better than we do. They will maul us.

Unfortunately, you saw what I did, This Defense is horrible. It makes the debacle that was last year look like the STEEL CURTAIN.
Good god Jimmy Garrofolo is gonna light us up.
 
And the chicken littles are back in force. **** people they may be bad or maybe they are trying to see if they can run the cover 2 and make teams prepare for it and then we will be back in our more standard look. Who knows. all I know is that I have seen us look like **** before in the preseason then look like an entirely different team when we start playing games that count. YOu would think we were half way through the regular season and winless. Patience people patience.

Oh the old patience it's all a ploy looking like total **** on defense to lure the opponent in. Sorry I've watched their God awful starts the last two years and that ain't holding water. I'd say more likely their defense is just **** and butler becomes the fall guy in the job he has waited for 5 years for because it is really Tomlin and his ****** zone defense. This team can give up.plays like they did in the first half but they gotta be a gambling aggressive defense. Hell after giving up two brutal big plays on the first two drives the worst they should have been down was one. What you can't do is play safe zone move down the field converting easy third downs. Then your offense sits. If MT can't figure that out why is he there.
 
It's preseason football. Basically, the only thing that matters less is ... nope, wrong, nothing matters less.

However, at some point Steelers defensive backs need to challenge receivers and jam them off the line. Giving receivers 5, 6 or 8 yards lets the receivers get free right away, with one open receiver immediately. If the pass pressure is close, hit that guy for an easy 8 yards. If the pressure has not arrived, wait for the other 2 receivers to run medium depth routes and get to a hole in the zone.

Also, I cannot figure out why the Steelers defensive backs never make a play on the ball. The benefit of the zone defense is that the cornerbacks can watch the QB and make a play on the ball. Yet the Steelers basically never had a defender in position to make a play on the ball, with one exception (the Boykin dropped pick).

Believe me, I know it is preseason football. The only thing that gets me worked up in preseason is when the team doesn't compete. Yesterday, the defensive backfield wasn't even competing. Throw, catch, tackle and a few times not even tackle. No plays on the ball whatsoever. You can compete and not show your defense, although I think that is the most over hyped nonsense I have ever heard. What, Belechick isn't going to figure out after the first series or two what the hell you are doing?

There was a bad tone set in this game that even sitting and watching TV you could feel. After Pouncey last week and some of the quotes during this week, it seemed the Steelers main goal was to not get anyone hurt. They didn't want to be there. Well, that is fine for Ben, Antonio, James Harrison, they know when to turn it on, but the young guys?
