This morning at the NFL combine in Indianapolis, GM Kevin Colbert discussed the role that Ryan Shazier would have in the upcoming season. The Athletic’s Mark Kaboly recorded this video of Colbert’s response to his question below. Probably no shocker to the SteelerNation.

I wonder if there has been any talks(of course this would include doctors) of extending him this off season.

Im thinking if he resumes playing it will be with the Steelers regardless of contract status. I assume he is a free agent after next season. If he could play in '19-20 Im sure they woukd work it out. Just get better for life sake Ryan. Rest us gravy.

Yeah he's a free agent after this upcoming season, has an 8+ million cap hit, didn't know if they'd think about an extension to power this year's cap hit

The NFL would probably highly frown upon an extension with a player who couldn't pass a physical and likely will never play again to lessen our cap hit on him. We're gonna eat that cap hit this year.

You're probably correct in that, but we'd be eating cap down the road if he doesn't play.

Redskins and Cowboys got ***** slapped by the league in 2010 for cap dumping. Unless they will are willing to forgive the cap hit (which I doubt) then we are eating his cap number for this year and comes off the books in 2019.

Don't we save 8.7 million in cap sapce if he retires?

I hear Seattle is thinking about trading Earl Thomas who has a similar cap number. Hmmm...

Best of luck to Ryan. Please do not attempt to play NFL football again. I'm sure the doctors are telling him he has plastic / metals support in your spine and one bad hit or fall and whatever mobility and touch you regained could be gone forever.

I'd be okay with the Steelers giving Shazier something like an injury settlement on the cap.

Id be interested in the rules around this. Foles contract is super kinked. Its all about spreading his guarenteed out. He is an automatic free agent if he is an Eagle Next February. Maybe they could give him an extention for three years and 8 million guarenteed, vet min every year. He gets the extra 600 or so k next year plus his 8 million and he is an auto free agent if he is on Roster after next Feb.

No Genius. His fifth year was fully guaranteed there is no settlement, when you are ALREADY guaranteed the money.....gheez.

When you retire the guaranteed or bonus money escalates to the current cap year. So his 8 mil will count in 2018. Some teams go after the money if players do retire before the end of a contract (like Detroit did with Sanders and Johnson). Steelers won’t obviously.

Colbert stated today he will be placed on an specific list (TBD by the league) but will still count on the team 90 player list for 2018. So he will be on the team roster as an inactive participant.

Why? A team can manage its cap however they want. It’s not like they could avoid paying him or eventually taking a cap hit.

That’s what people said about Peyton Manning until his doctor set the record straight and said there was no increased risk of injury.

Different injury, with two different outcomes.

I don't know about that as there are way more shady things done than this. You are right that we will eat the hit thius year because the STEELERS are above that approach but it definately has been talked about internally.

Actually Ike, I'm the one that's been saying that.

When I researched the 5th year option, there are 2 points that would get you out of it. I read if the player is not rostered, then he doesn't get the 5th year option and is automatically a FA. Retirement would be a loophole to take Shazier off of the roster. It is no surprise he's not playing this year, and I believe it would be irresponsible for him to ever play football again with a fused back.

The other thing that gets a team out of the 5th year option, is if the player shows up out of shape. This is an injury and not an out of shape issue, so hopefully Shazier can help the Steelers with that roster exemption.

KC said Ryan would be counted on the 90 man roster (89 other spots remaining). I know there wasn't a specific list he would be placed on yet as it seems they are waiting to determine what the League offices will classify Ryan. If its not "non-football related" then its either IR or not passed physical, right?

The list they determine is confusing, but he will count against the cap for the full guarantees. The way I understand it, if his salary was only the player salary without any bonus/guarranteed money, then he could be released and that salary wouldn't be counted on the cap. Since its a bonus/guaranteed payment it does count throughout the life of the contract. If there is a retirement, all the guarantees escalates to the current cap year. Dallas and Washington got hand slapped and fined for trying to define payments as "non" guaranteed money with creative accounting. IIRC....correct me if I am wrong.

I'm not sure Ike. This is a unique circumstance with the 5th year option. Also even more unique since our player can't walk and probably won't play football again. If his money counts though, we really can't sign Bell. That is an $8M albatross that the Steelers would be stuck with.

I assume that if the steelers are stuck with the $8M, there are 2 ways to handle it. Take the hit next year and it's off the books, or sign him to a longer contract for the entire value of this year's amount. Like a 4yr $8M contract. putting him at a prorated $2M/season for 4 years.

I also don't know if, since this is a unique situation, if the league can rule to forgive the cap requirement, on a player that probably won't play again.

We'll find out next week.

From Bouchette and Dulac and Lolley at DKSports they all appear to imply that the Steelers will have enough cap room to tag Bell, and manuever in FA even with Ryan's 8 mill on the book. They expect savings from Mitchell and Wilcox release. A couple more restructures (AB and another player) plus the estimated rise in the salary cap.

What the issue is, and I don't like it, but its what it is.....Ryan injury, while catastrophic to his career is still....an injury that occurred during play. No different than career threatening to other players. Pitt kept Spence on the roster for two years during rehab, albeit as IR and his salary was negligible. Ryan's isn't since he was a 1st rounder with the 5th year option. There was some commentary on satellite radio about if he could be classified as a interim coach or FO position. That would be interesting since if so, those positions would not count as part of the players cap. But there is the retirement issue. IDK....I think the CBA has new ground regarding this...but all the beat writers and NFL officials who have commented on it have stated there isn't a good way to circumvent it on the final year of a contract with guarantees.
