Shazier had surgery

Darn, it was not a rumor.

Spinal Fusion/Stabilization

What is spinal fusion/stabilization?

Spinal fusion is surgery to permanently*join together two or more bones in the spine so there is no movement between them. These bones are called vertebrae. The surgery uses bone grafts, screws, and rods to stabilize them. Other surgery, such as laminectomy, is almost always done first. Spinal fusion may be done if you have:

Injury or fractures to the bones in the spine
Weak or unstable spine caused by infections or tumors
A condition called “spondylolisthesis,” where one vertebrae slips forward on top of another
Abnormal curvatures of the spine
Arthritis in the spine, such as spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal column)

What’s the long-term outlook with spinal fusion surgery?

In most cases, the long-term outlook for patients with spinal fusion surgery is very good. If you had chronic back pain before surgery, you may still have some afterward. Losing weight and getting exercises increases your chances of feeling better.

After spinal fusion surgery, the area that was fused together can no longer move, reducing pain caused by excessive movement of the vertebrae.

>>Now I fear he has broken bones in his back.

Shazier Under Went Surgery Wednesday Night

The Steelers have released another update on Ryan Shazier and it comes with more bad news. Initially it was believed that Shazier wouldn’t require any surgery, but clearly things changed once some of the swelling went down. Here is the official release from the Steelers. Statement from UPMC Neurosurgeons & #Steelers Team Physicians on Ryan […]

In a minimally invasive spinal surgery scenario, it takes anywhere between 4 to 6 weeks to recover, but that's for people who don't have to play football. I think Shazier is out for the year. A shame, he was the defensive MVP.

Get well Ryan.

Wishing him the best. That's gotta be rough. I assume this will be a career ender?

Almost certainly. No team or the NFL/NFLPA will bear the liability of someone playing after that type of surgery. Right now, I just hope he can resume a "normal" life and walk again.

Time will tell. Wish they'd stop starving us for information.

Its slow moving because they have to wait for results. Back injuries are no joke.

As long as he isn't placed on IR then we can have some type of crazed fan hope that he will return this season.

If and when he goes on IR, then we have to ask the question about his future. I have my own guess but really my one and only hope is for Ryan to be pain and symptom free. Football is not the primary concern at the moment, even if we all want him back healthy.

Man, I told my wife I thought he broke his mid-back during the game. So messed up. God Bless Ryan.

From my brief research, "spinal stabilization surgery" is a very general term and covers a wide range of severity of issues. Just hoping and praying for the best.

I had a niece that had this surgery due to a car accident, she had no feeling or movement in her lower body for close to a month. she got her movement back and with therapy now lives a very normal relatively pain free life. I pray that is what happens to Ryan, but no way in hell do I see him playing again, even if you were cleared why would you risk it? Walking, playing with your kids and dancing with your daughter at a daddy daughter dance or her wedding way out weighs playing ******* football.

Get well soon Ryan, and thank you for being a steeler..

My main hope for Ryan is that he can have a normal life. This is a first class organization and I know they would step up for a fallen man who leaves millions on the table. My wish is tgat he could return next season. Get well Ryan. My son Michael will never forget your high five comming out of the tunnel in KC 2 years ago.

I think for his position it is. Remember, Peyton Manning had similar surgery - no idea if it's the exact same surgery, but his position of QB isn't subject to the same kind of hits that a LB would be.

His career is over! One they fuse something you are ****** for the rest of your life! Not just your athletic life either.

Worst decision he could have ever made!

I am guessing it was not strictly his decision to make and the medical staff had some solid input into the decision. The fact that they flew him back to Pitt and did the surgery overnight says it was probably more of a necessity than an option.

Shocking news. Hope the surgery was successful. If this is career-ending, then thanks for your services, Ryan. I will wear your jersey this Sunday in your honor.

What was his alternative?

Spinal surgery is a last resort. They didn't even give the spine time to fully heal. If he's not in any serious jeopardy of being paralyzed....which he is not....they should have waited.

Spinal fusion should be last resort only. That's goes for everyone. Seek every other possible avenue as an option before a spinal fusion.

Shazier's career is over! Sucks because ou defense without him is in trouble.

Anyway I hope he comes through ok and can get on with his life. His career is done!

Depending on where the Fusion is, his playing career may be over. If it's mid back, I personally wouldn't ever play again.

I know there are NFL Players that have played with neck and L5-S1 (Lowest vertebra to hip) fusions.

Good news is he should have a normal life, Bad news is I just don't see him playing this year.
