Shazier Fined 25k for Hit on Kizer

Ryan Shazier was flagged for his hit on Browns QB Deshone Kizer on Sunday. The league also hit him in the wallet as he was fined $25,000 for the hit.

That's the first time I actually saw that. Looks to me that he had already lowered his head to hit Kizer when he slid. That fine seems very ticky tacky to me based on that video. You can't stop yourself in mid-tackle because the QB decides to slide.

He was using his helmet as a weapon. Very cut and dry. Always should be a fine, and Tomlin was not happy about it during his press conference. He said He (Shazier) should know better.

Going to the ground has nothing to do with this being a fine or a bad call. You can't lead with the helmet anymore in this league. Period.

Though there was no chance for Shazier being suspended, there is now a record of him being fined for a bad hit. If it becomes reoccurring, he can be suspended in the future.

Do you coach tackling? I do. We devote 25 minutes of a two hour practice to safe contact. You can drill and drill and drill. But sometimes in a high speed impact a person's natural reaction is just to lower his head. I can say it was a penalty, I can even say it met the criteria for further discipline. I won't say it was dirty.

It's really not football anymore. It's a shell of it's former self. That's why we're so soft like rabbit fur in the middle of the field. It's open all day everyday. For free..haha

I understand the fine, but that's real borderline. I mean, you can tell Shazier was already bracing to make contact before Kizer started to slide. I mean, sure I guess you gotta get that stuff out of the game, but it's hard to point the finger at Shazier and say that was dirty
 
It looked like a shoulder tackle attempt with contact made to Kizer's side. Outside of the slide he was a runner and was being tracked and set for contact as such. I'm sure there was a little "welcome to the NFL" in that hit, but not dirty. Kizer's slide was more of a base runner slide as well. He didn't get down to give himself up, he lunged to gain extra space.

maybe the rook needs to slide sooner when a Mack truck is running full speed at him in the open field. Just saying.
 
The only thing that is clear to me, and was the reason why he was fined:

He lowered his head and took his eyes off the ball-carrier when he launched himself head first. Doesn't matter if Kiser slid after that, or slid late, Shazier wasn't looking at him.
 
They are not going to let you take shots at the qb. The old "he's a running back when he takes off" is out the window. You can't try to blast him, you have to just wrap him up. That's the way it is.

I HATE the QB slide rule. If you don't want to get hit then don't run or get your *** out of bounds. The fact that you can run and not take a hit is bullshit.

In other news, I'm old and I miss the old dangerous unsafe NFL.
 
Cope is right, SHAZ did turn his head into him. That will get fined no matter what when directed at a QB, slide or not. The severity of fine shows that it wasn't just incidental. Unfortunately the NFL reviews these types of plays in way slow motion and HD clear ity so they can see everything angle wise. We as fans see a grainy recut version or replay on our TVs and think we see everything. DEFINATELY NOT defending the NFL as I think they suck but also know when our guy is guilty and deserving. Shazier will NOT make that mistake again and he is NOT a dirty player. Tomlin was pissed about SHAZ using his crown and stated so, Shazier was using it above the neck but was failing above the neck in his above the neck tackle.
