Season's Over - Time To Talk Draft?

If I was picking for the Steelers next year, I go BPA out of one the following positions: CB, S, OLB.....whoever is the top rated guy in that group, I take..unless there is a dynamic pass catching TE who is a much higher rated player, then I would consider that. Otherwise I stick with one of those 3 positions.
 
The O line wasn't great yesterday but they certainly gave Ben plenty of time on most plays. We didn't lose the game because of them. The O line should not be addressed early in the draft. Maybe a late pick but that would be it. I would be happy with all D picks and a TE. Overall, our O is fine. The D needs a complete overhaul.
 
Maybe we should go back to way we drafted OLB's when Cowher, draft undersized athletic college DE's instead of guys that played OLB in college.
I know we need CB's, but a pass rusher that can win a one on one battle and get sacks is more important right now.

the problem with that is that there are so many other teams playing the 3-4 now.makes it even harder to find those undersized DEs
 
Biggest question to me is what happens with LeBeau? If he retires does that mean the end of the whole SB squad - Troy, Keisel, Ike, Debo? Do they all take a bow and go out together? Once that gets sorted out, FA and draft may commence...
 
so if the Chiefs can't sign Houston and have to Franchise him. isn't it only a 1st rounder to get. If so and he is only 24 or 25yrs old, I would gladly give up my 22nd overall pick for a proven player.
 
I got along with TMC... and found him insightful.

Also I like the double pick at a need position simply because its a crapshoot at best... take two, maybe even 3 DBs by the 4th round. take a shot on a one dimensional pass rusher in the mid rounds... maybe a RB too... if a good one is available in rounds 3 or 4.

If they put the "exclusive rights" Franchise Tag on him, no one can negotiate with him but the Chiefs. If they put the "non exclusive rights" Franchise Tag on him, anyone can negotiate with him, but KC retains the right to match their offer. If they choose not to match the offer, the team that signs him gives up TWO first round picks. That's a steep price for any player.

lot of ways to look at it, but I would say Houston just might be worth that............

Yeah, but it's not that simple. You would be in essence trading Jarvis, Ryan (their draft positions anyway) plus decreasing your salary cap by the amount of Houston's contract minus the slotted salaries of the two draft picks. A very steep price indeed.

Houston would then no doubt suffer a high ankle sprain, or a hamstring injury and be out for 2/3 of the season....

So what're we waiting for? PAY THE MAN!!
 
If you could guarantee that we could get an unblockable force on the outside I'd give them those picks and lose that money. Our defense will be *** until we have somebody offenses fear rushing the passer. THAT player makes those DB's better too by hurrying the passer. There's a reason those players get paid like they do. ****, KC isn't even taking that chance so it's a moot point.
 
Come on man, the Steelers are not going to attempt signing Justin Houston if he become available which he most likely will not. You guys know better than that! This is not what we do sign some high price F/A on the first day of free agency. It won't happen. No, they will first do a dusting of coaches where I think we could see LeBeau being retired and possibly another ST coach fired. Then the big contract extension of Ben and also Heyward will limit what we can spend in F/A, and they will overpay for Worrilds out of panic like they did with Allen and Gilbert. So where will this cap space come from to sign a Justin Houston? I think they will do their do diligence and sign a tier 2 player or two like they normally do at CB and LB, and they will possibly try and resign Moats, Will Allen, Antoine Blake and McCain on the cheap for depth. They will essentially build through the draft like always and take the best player available on their board when their turn comes and oh yes, they will run to the podium to pick him.

With LeBeau will go Troy into retirement along with Ike, James Harrison and Keisel. The question is who will replace Dick?

Of course, the point is that decision process has to change...... if not Houston double up on pass rushers........ or corners like New England did. Bring in a proven commodity instead of a player who was unproductive like they flooded the roster with last off-season.

Great teams know when they have a hole to fill and attack the problem with talent instead of using scrubs as stop gaps in hope that either a draft pick learns quickly, or the scrub turns out to be above adequate.

But DL's scheme isn't rookie friendly, and the Steelers made it far enough to think they are a few impact players away from making a run.

Well like New England/Ravens/Broncos did............... bring in those impact players.

**** Revis will again be available bring him in. Sign a Gore so that RB depth issue won't happen again. If not Houston bring in a few OLBers who have a history of getting to the QB.

You have a better chance with a was than a never was.

Harrison showed that in spurts, Kevin Greene showed that. So did the pass rusher Ravens picked up in ED>

This off-season the FO needs to fix these obvious defensive weaknesses................ We know what they are they know what they are...............

just don't scrub us to death this year .....................
 
I don't understand why the board is so fixed on drafting a CB with the first pick. The problem on D comes from the lack of rushing the QB, the team urgently needs a disrupting OLB more than anything else, without pass rush there's no CB that can keep tight cover; then I'd go for a CB, FS, NT on the second round. Another option would be to get an OLB on free agency, break the bank on a proven player that would definitely improve the D then you can get BPA on D.

We already have a good CB on William Gay, Cortez Allen can become a starter again, resign McCain and or Blake and then complement that with the rookie.

IIRC mitchels contract is heavily loaded upfront, keep that bozo for one more year to prove his worth so if he stinks again you cut him next year for minimal impact on the cap, if he doesn't keep him.

If the D changes to a 4-3 then you draft a DT on the first round instead of an OLB

If there's a good LT left on the draft on second or third round I wouldn't think it twice to draft him. It moves Beachum to LG or RT, double improvement with one move. This is another spot where I would invest on FA, proven vet to anchor the line and keep Bens blindside clean.
 
I know its not going to happen. But i would give up the picks for Houston. Easy decision. We need a pass rusher. The defense doesnt work with out one. We could draft a million DBs without a force at OLB we will struggle. Even Rod Woodson gave up plays in Dick Lebeau's style of "keep it in front of you and tackle the catch" defense. The difference was Rod was a beast. Freak of nature. Once in life time player. He punished guys on the catch. So unless we get another Rod we will still be bitching and moaning about guys playing off coverage and giving up underneath passes. We need a pass rusher. The 3-4 is built on pressure. Have to have it. Houston is young and would be worth every penny. Pipe dreams I know.

Fowler is scheme diverse and can get after the QB or drop into coverage. He is best though when he has his ears pinned back and going after the QB. I believe we can "manage" with McCain, Blake, Gay, and Allen at CB next year and a pass rusher would make them look a helluva lot better. Just look at how much better they looked when Harrison started to get after the QB.

I kind of doubt he lasts this long but the site I used had him ranked about where we would draft. He is definitely a ballhawk with 14 picks, yes 14, last year. Likes to make those "splash plays" Tomlin speaks of in either picking off a pass or knocking the ball loose from the receiver. Comes up to help run support and not afraid of contact. Only weakness is he doesn't wrap up. Something like that can be taught just should have been taught by now.

RD3- Nick O'Leary TE Florida St
I saw a few drops from our sure handed TE this year and he is not getting any younger. O'Leary has great hands, runs tight routes, and might not be the biggest guy but he does admirable at blocking.

RD4- Cam Thomas CB Western Kentucky
Tall, long arms, agressive CB with good hands and good anticipattion.

RD5- Robert Myers OL Tennessee State
Scheme diverse lineman who has a ton of upside. Give Munchak some clay to work with.

RD6- Quandre Diggs CB Texas
Decent sized CB with good production in college. Isn't afraid of contact.

RD7- Rob Havenstein OT Texas
Havenstein was a big part of the Badgers being able to open holes for Gordon. He isn't going to blow you away with his athleticism but he seems to play hard and nasty so I like him as a depth guy with a little upside.
