Sean's aggressiveness and strong tackling is the reason why the Steelers running game is improving. He's helping in the box and clicking and closing on short yardage pass plays to limit YAC opportunities. There is a play specifically that I want to discuss that led to William Gay's interception.

3:10 left in the 3rd QTR
Dalton attempts a pass to Malone.

Steelers are in cover 2. Sean has deep left half, Mitchell deep right half.
Knowing both receivers are in front of him, Sean clicks and closes on the receiver as the ball is thrown.
Sean extends and gets a hand on the football, knocking the ball up into the air for Gay to intercept.

This is my problem with Mitchell. A good safety will understand the game situation, and play the football when it is thrown. Michell tends to be too late to recognize the game situation and can't close fast enough to make plays on the ball. It's much nicer to have the extra speed in the safety position and good to see these types of plays starting to be made in our secondary.

Mitchell for me is too close minded. Tackle tackle hit hit. ************ how about knock the ball down or hell even intercept it once and awhile.

I mean I realize he is better than some starters, and can hit and disrupt the ball. So I will give him that.

But I dream of having a ball-hawking FS.

But I would imagine they are hard to find.

I hear you on that thug ****** Mitchell but I too also realize he is better than other starters. DREAM ON I'm thinking but hopefully we draft one this coming draft.

Yawn Sean Davis has been better than Mitchell from day 1.

Maybe but I still wouldn't mind taking a look see at Wilcox just to confirm to myself that Mitchell isn't the POS I think he is.

I know Mitchell is hated on.. BUT his contributions to the defensive backs communication cant be overlooked.

Davis is awesome and will get better. Mitchell the best he will ever be right now which is adequate. thing I don't like about Mitchell is he continues to celebrate what should be routine tackles. a lot of our defense guys are starting to celebrate when they make an average play. I hate that.

Coach disapproves of all the positive vibes from this thread......He's wants so badly to comment, but won't bring himself to acknowledge he made a mistake in his scouting.

Thanks Ant, I need more positives for Mitchell, I don't want to hate on any Steeler players. I just want him to make some plays!!!

Mitchell can be solid. He needs to stay level headed. That's all.

And yes! Sean Davis is turning out to be good and consistently at that.
Just my opinion, but I feel Joe Haden has turned around the culture of the defensive backs for the better.

Davis and Hilton are studs this season. The defensive backs deserve some props

How about a play on the ball or heaven forbid.............an interception...................... Hope he is using contraception........

you might find that "piece of ****" a lot more useful after seeing Wilcox for an extended period of play time

The operative word in that sentence is ...might.
But then again it might turn into a ...might not. I'm no Mitchell fan and maybe POS was a little harsh but an upgrade is needed non the less.

Sometimes you have to accept a player for what he is. He a hitter. Will never be a guy who looks for the ball. WRs and TEs pay attention to where he is and know he will deliver a shot. Might lead to drops because he is worried about Mitchell. He is what he is.

I Still say he ain't all that.--Coach

He has had two games in a row, but compared to the other DB's, he's made less plays for the season.

If we were to rank the starting 11 people on defense, I do not think Davis would rate any better than 8th.

That's all I ask of Davis. He has played two good games in a row.

On the other hand he has played 23 NFL games, and has 1 more interception than the posters on the forum. That needs to change.

Don't hate Mike Mitchell. He's a quirky guy, and he admits it. He also admits he has a temper that gets the best of him at times. But you see him on the sideline holding court with the DBs and you see him doing most of the talking. He's a leader, and a better free safety than most fans realize. Just because he tackled Leonard Fournette after 12-yard gain and got up celebrating is no need to dislike the guy. Heck, if I had prevented a 70-yard TD sprint as the last line of defense against a runaway freight train, I'd have been excited too.

Sean Davis played a second consecutive outstanding game. I believe the good folks at Pro Football Focus gave him the highest Steelers grade. I'm not surprised, but Davis stuck to his previous week's stance that his best career games were last year against Baltimore on Christmas and the playoff game against Miami. But he did agree with me on Sunday's favorite play: the one that knocked Joe Mixon dizzy into a backward circle before he just dropped the live ball on the field. Bengals recovered, or we would be seeing that play in our sleep.

Ooh, he's up from your previous ranking of #10!

I don't rank defenders, I don't think it's fair to compare a DB to a LB or DL. They can't play those other positions. What I see is either a playmaker, a potential playmaker, or a body.

Playmakers:
Tuitt
Hayward
Watt
Dupree
Shazier
Davis
Burns
Hayden
Hilton

Potential Playmaker
Hargrave
Harrison
Chickillo

Just a guy
Williams (though he did have one excellent playmaking game, so he can rise)
Mitchell
Matakevich
Fort
Gay
Moats

All they guys have potential to improve. Hargrave was a playmaker last year, and can move up as well.

We have 8/11 starters that are playmakers, and Hilton in the Nickel. This D is already special and has room to get better due to the youth and getting used to the system. You can see it improve each week, and they're already playing at a high level. They are truly fun to watch!
