Saints center Max Unger retires after 10 seasons

The New Orleans Saints are in need of a center.

Veteran center Max Unger is retiring after 10 seasons in the league, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Saturday. ESPN first reported the news.

Rapoport added that Unger is officially on the reserve/retired list, as of Saturday afternoon.

Unger had one year remaining on a three-year extension signed in 2016 and was owed $5.1 million in base salary this upcoming season.

Drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the second round of the 2009 draft, Unger spent the last four years anchoring the middle of New Orleans' offensive line. The 32-year-old All-Pro center was coming off of a Pro Bowl season, the third of his career and his first with the Saints.

Unger was a model of consistency in New Orleans, missing just one game and committing just four penalties in four years. The veteran was considered the 19th-ranked center in 2018, according to Pro Football Focus.

Behind Unger on New Orleans' line are more questions than answers. Cameron Tom, an undrafted third-year interior lineman out of Southern Miss, is next in line to snap the ball to Drew Brees, but the Saints are reportedly looking for a replacement in the barren free-agency market.

Word is, they're looking at Steelers B.J. Finney to replace him. Apparently there aren't any FA Centers out there worth a damn and they need somebody to come in immediately. Take this with a grain of salt though of course. Haven't really heard many local beat writers talking too much about it.

Who'd you hear that from? The only thing I saw on the topic was Dale Lolley wondered if the Saints would look at him. Nothing more than that.

Justin Houston's future property manager. But seriously, speculation from bloggers at this point. I did see Dale wondering about it, but that's why I said take this with a grain of salt.

The stupidity of re-signing the old, slow and mediocre Foster instead of going with the younger, better Finney will bite us in the ***. Our Oline is getting old and without Munchack they will regress.

You seem pretty dead-set in your beliefs here, and I can't disagree about how good I think Finney is at LG (watch him start I believe his 2nd game against KC), but I don't know if you're giving Ramon Foster enough credit.

Time will tell. We will see.

Steelers Depot has ripped Foster repeatedly when breaking down tape. he is a below average player and is old and now over payed, never a good combination.

Yep, he speculated about the Saints getting him for the 2nd rounder. Of course that would leave us currently with one backup center on the roster, Patrick Morris.

yeah i HIGHLY doubt that happens. basically, if a team is committing a 2nd rd tender to a player, they're telling the rest of the league, "uh, yeah, unless you make this guy the highest paid player at his position by a comfortable margin, he's staying with us"

Anyone who thinks the loss of Munchak means nothing hasn't a clue. He was our best coach and a reason why we could plug in in-experienced players when needed without disastrous results.

As for Foster, the only thing I can think of why the Steelers kept him is he is a leader type, and Ben likes him. I would have let Foster walk, taken a comp pick ( even if it was only a 7th round pick ) and went with Finney who's just as good, and will soon be better for sure once age catches up with Foster.

Here's a quick one. Foster or Fort? If you can only sign one, who would it be?

wait. I would take a 2nd rd pick for finny.

If they took Finney, you better use the pick to take a guard centre. Pouncey is getting long in the tooth with a long history of injury. You need a competent backup.

The Saints should be in a win now mode. Brees might only play 1-2 more years. Rumor has it Peyton might bolt to Dallas rather than over see a rebuilding process. I could see the Saints making a play for Finney, and would be okay getting their 2nd round pick for him. We would likely have to use a draft pick in round two or three to pick a center / guard.
