By Jessica Costello SteelerNation.com Since playoffs aren’t apart of the Pittsburgh Steelers future from this past season, the most important decisions to be made are the ones dealing with free agency this off-season. The most difficult decision for the team, and even the fans to have to come to terms with, will be the placement […]

I would wager they did this so he had health insurance and qualifies for any NFL veteran health benefits with more years under his belt. How long they want to continue to throw away good cap money for a guy who will never suit up again is up to ownership.

Unless there's something we don't know, I'm thinking they will have him "retire" and offer him a coaching position. If he does miraculously improve to where he can play again, then he can un-retire. As a coach, he should be able to still use the team facilities and even doctors.

It was a minimal amount in the grand scheme of things. Probably try to move him over to some sort of coaching responsibility. But if his health insurance is indeed the issue a year or two more won't kill us

Not sure if his out of pocket costs change from player to coach but I could potentially see an issue there.

No, it definitely doesn't kill us considering there's dead cap space that goes unused every year. This is why I said its up to ownership.

Nice little write up Jessica. Informative as to what information is available. Thank You

I see the STEELERS keeping on helping him in a medical sense. I don't know enough about the IR stations as to if there is a non-cap but team retainable IR or not.

Commendable on keeping him but I'd be surprised if outright released.

A lot of variables. I would have no problem if they could sign him like they did this past year and do that for a few more years. That would get him more tenure in the league as well.

I saw him at the 49ers game. He is not playing football again. This is a classy outfit. They will do everything possible to take care of a player who lost what he lost.

Yeah Ryan won’t be able to suit up again and that’s truly sad for this young man. I cannot ever see him getting medically cleared to play again. I think the team will work something out with Ryan as a positional coach or a scout because like him or not, Art II really cares about his guys and won’t hesitate to ensure Ryan has a place with the team.

Glad the Steelers took care of his salary. I would oupd love to see him suit up but it would be insane to risk coming back with such a major injury. I dont see him suiting up in 2020. Right now Bens return is a priority along with drafting a future franchise QB.
