Ahhh foot drop, definitely a possibility. Good catch on your wife identifying the type of brace.
Foot drop can be worked out as it is usually a sign of a bigger problem. But we already know what that problem is. Thing is not every case of foot drop works itself out.

Unfortunately correct. Ben is holding him and he has his one hand on the rail. He is standing but not walking fully on his own yet, unfortunately.

The good news is that brace is for standing, so he's probably doing walking therapy on rails now.
The bad news is, he doesn't have ankle/foot function in his left leg yet. Those nerves are still repairing. That brace is used when you lack the muscle control or strength for keeping your toes and front of your foot up.
I'd have to project that Shazier will not be playing football this year. I'm sure the team doctors are of like mind. Look for the Steelers to either release him, or hopefully the classy thing; retire him and pay him as a goodwill ambassador $1M/yr for 8-10 years (to cover the $8M he would have gotten this year for his 5th year option).
The positives for this option are:
1) they retain his rights if he returns from retirement, like they did for James Harrison
2) paying him as an ambassador does not count against the cap.
His 5th year option for this coming year is guaranteed. So, he gets it and we take the cap hit. Only way for it not to hit is for them to extend his contract. I think that might be where you came up with the $1 million for 8-10 years.
You can extend it, and then deal with what to do with him in the offseason (the next one).
He will get a bonus and the Steelers some cap wiggle room.
Lord knows they could use a better LB coach.
I read up on this rule, when I was doing research for the Franchise tag. Turns out, he has to be on the roster to get the 5th year option $$. If he's not rostered, he doesn't get it.
That is why I expect him to retire before the start of free agency, which is the start of the new NFL calendar year.
Not true. In the case of an injury it is guaranteed. That's the only exception.

Ryan can retire, and the 5th year option is off the table. That's the only loophole I can think of.
